Hello Jim,

The reunion you and the team put together was truly special. It is still sinking in. To think now that I nearly did not attend should add to this note’s serendipity.

The attached is a touching email and photograph Larry Silver sent to me. He brought this picture to the dinner Saturday night and I immediately felt it should be shared with everyone via the website. (Posting as a new thread eliminates the picture(?) ). I am grateful that Larry cared so much to share it with those who knew Bill and Glen.

The brothers in the picture from left to right are Bill Holloway (‘68) , Glen Cornielson (‘66) , and Larry Silver (‘67).

Bill Holloway (‘67) passed away from a fatal heart attack a few years ago. I had no idea he died before the reunion, so naturally I was totally overwhelmed when I heard Billy was gone. He was your classic Stags gentleman/stud. Looked like a face man, high IQ, articulate, had a punch like a lead pipe. Insightful, capable guy. Such a loss. Jeran McClain, Bill’s longtime girlfriend, learned of Bill’s passing just a week before the reunion, crying uncontrollably for hours. They almost married, were together for 11 years total, and over subsequent years assumed she would see him again one day. Perhaps at this event – an exciting possibility that would never happen now.

Glen Cornielson (‘66) was murdered in his sophomore year at UM driving a cab before spring break. For the rest of our lives we would wrestle with ‘why’ and ‘what if’. It happened the first day on the job making a pickup just after his shift ended (to show his hustle to the new employer). ‘We were closest of friends, playing football together at Gables, breaking up Larry’s fights in Pappy’s Pizza, and were brothers in SAE at Miami. I too was hired along with Glen and Jim Searle at the same cab company. Glen decided to start work 2 weeks sooner because his exam load was easy. Larry Silver, another one of Glenn’s best friends, was the last to see Glen alive when he stopped by Larry’s house to show off the goofy cab that fateful night. How would Larry know that just minutes later Glen would be dead, shot in the head by a waiter from The Studio restaurant over chump change. Many of us would not be the same again. Glen was so loved his funeral procession choked traffic for multiple stop lights at a time down 8th street. Glen was an exceptional athlete yes, but more importantly he inspired people, so we miss him terribly.

Larry Silver looks nearly identical to the way he does in this picture. Together back at Gables we laughed our way through life, with our whole lives ahead of us. It is the chemistry of our friendships that ignite us to where the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts. I remember being like a camera lens during most of the outings with these maniacs, not being able to enjoy it enough. (I’ll bet the brothers from every era have similar memories).

For me, a healing took place at the reunion, having buried within me the loss of special friends, and thanks to Larry and all those brothers who expressed the same feelings that night, I finally let it out after 35 years.

I call your attention to the sentiment Larry wrote in his email to me. I am taking a liberty which I feel is appropriate, so please include it. I believe it sums up the joy mirrored by the reunion events – to simply cherish each other while we are here, before it is gone......and brothers, laugh....because you never know.

God bless you Jim, and the committee. It was worth it.

PS – After this no more mushy shit from me, back to my ole Stag’s self.

Jim,
Attached is the electronic photo of Bill and Glen for all. I tried the other day to find it now was able to get computer thinking right. I know that Glen's passing so early in his life and so tragically did have a tremendous effect on my outlook. After speaking with you the other nights I see you too, were effected and in the end we went on but, we suffered a great loss. Glen was a very special human being. Bill sadly, got caught up in a cycle of alcohol that he was unable to beat it. It was great getting together with old friends that don't look old and it has made me realize to laugh more and be thankful for my past, present and future.
Larry

Bill Parker

Year Inducted: 1981
Hometown: Lake Wales, FL
Category: Men's Fast Pitch
Division: Men's Fast Pitch

Bio
Versatility marked Bill Parker’s fast pitch softball career. Parker could play just about any position in softball and almost did after joining the Clearwater, FL Bombers in 1962, playing the outfield, second base and third base. A year earlier Parker batted .364 (4-for-11) in the national championship for Homestead, FL and was noticed by the Bombers. The 1961 tourney was the first of 11 national championships Parker played in--including nine with the Bombers. In 11 nationals he batted .257 with 44 hits in 171 at-bats, scoring 26 runs and driving in 17. Six times Parker earned ASA All-America honors including first-team honors in 1966 (.357), 1967 and 1968 (.333) and second-team in 1962, (.176), 1964 (.308) and 1965 (.211). In 1967, Parker batted .409 in the national championship to lead all hitters. In 1968, he was captain of the Men’s Major Fast Pitch All-Stars, a role not unfamiliar for Parker who was named captain of the Bombers in 1964.In 1963, Parker set a Bomber record for consecutive game hitting streak, 18, and most games with two or more hits, 10. He also had a streak of 12 consecutive hits that season. He was the second Bomber to have 100 or more hits in a season. In 1970 he led the team with a .353 batting average. Parker played on five national championship teams, two runners-up, and two third place finishers. After retiring, he managed the Bombers to a second place in 1972 and to their 10th national title in 1973. Parker was born February 9, 1933 in Lake Wales, FL on April 3, 2005 Parker died of a heart attack. He was 72 years old.

Above #18 the Boy's Club Float. Featured yours truly being pulled down Miracle Mile jumping on the trampoline. Everyone screamed when we reached Ponce de Leon, they thought I was going to hit one of the very few traffic light in the Gables at the time. Of course I knew the light was there but, I just had the shake up the crowd.
