Bob: my sister (now passed away) went to Gables the same years you went to SW... The names you mention from Gables are those names I remember from her, and know I met some of them.

Woody Woodward was a really great guy to me when I was a kid and was very supportive of my CG Youth Center days as a pitcher and third base...I remember my sister coming by one of my games with him and I was so excited (I saw him play for many years on the Braves...). This was also the time when the pole vault was a big deal due to the new materials the pole was allowed to be made of. I can't remember his name but I'll not forget watching some Gables guy break a record at a track meet (maybe 15' or something like that). He became pretty famous too - in the pole vault. He jumped against another guy who became famous for a while - I want to to say Bob Segan or something like that...
I had more friends at SW than from Gables until my Jr year at Gables but all the guys I knew were younger than you (like me - by 4 years)...

Tim: The pole vaulter was John Pennel who had a brother in my class named Bill. Yes John set all sorts of records which of course were later broken. Speaking of track & field when i was a little guy I set a record at a district event at Flamingo Park on the beach in the high jump but it was with the scissor kick then these guys came along with western and eastern roll and the kick was no longer an option in the high jump.

Thanx Terry... I have not looked at my sisters year book in a while and brought it out during my Thanksgiving time off from work... John Pennel is right!... 'Bob Segren?' visited Gables on a Saturday meet when John beat him... John went 15 1/2' and Bob could only clear 15' (I think it was the first time anyone made 15' or more)...
Bob later went on to be in the Olympics but I don't know what happened to John...

Tim:

I tried to send you a google report on John Pennell...he was first to clear 17 feet. Site says he was the greatest of all time...died of cancer

Played football with John's brother Bill. He was also a good athlete. Both old Boys Club grads from 32 Ave.

Thanks Terry... got your report. I was too young to keep 'track' of him at the time but I always will remember witnessing his world record vault at Gables in 1963 - it was loud and exciting and I never saw another track event at Gables that had so much attention paid to it. There must have been at least 3,000 people at the event to see the attempts made that day.
