Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/08/2003 05:55:58 By Herb Stebbins 68
Gaston, so far the only people I have been able to reach are Kimel and Vizzini.(Vizzin's E-mail is not correct and he is going to change it) I have tried several internet search features without success. I'll keep trying though. How many people have you been able to reach? Question of the day???? Who spoke these words over the intercom at David Farchild Elementary School. "Christopher Columbus came to this country in 3 little chits" (chits is not a spelling error) You only get one guess! Take care Pal, hope to see you soon. Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/08/2003 07:46:57 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Well Herb, I guess it was me . Tommy Ott, never let me forget it. It was to be his part of the morning show. He knew I couln't say words with sh's or ch's .He told Mr. Bockting that I was ready,he set me up.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/08/2003 08:42:40 By Herb Stebbins 68
Gus, those were great years. Sometimes after a few martinis, I wish I could do it again. On second thought that probably wouldn't be a good idea. If I did, I probably wouldn't be here today. Talk to ya latter. Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/08/2003 09:16:04 By chuck helmly (1969)
Hey Herb:

Those really were great days. Remember the night at PAL when I got into a fight with some guy, I think his name was Raul, from Coral Park. You broke it up and we said that our boys would meet their boys at Coral Gables Youth Center the next day. We were all nervous because the word on the street was that he was a psycho and had a machine gun in his trunk. The next day about 50 guys showed up from both sides. You got in the middle and negotiated a settlement and we both shook hands and walked away.

Hope everything is good with you.

I can't wait to see you at the reunion

If an old fart may intrude I'm glad to see some of the "younger" brothers start to kick ass and get this reunion really off the ground.I'm looking forward to seeing some of you that I know and those that I do not, including real old farts from the 50s. We go back a really long time.
Gaston can't get my damned scanner to do what I want so I'm mailing everything to Kavney.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/12/2003 12:29:52 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Gus:

Chuckie(Ladd)passed away about 5 years ago. I think from liver complications. Norman Dicks, I don't know if you remember him, aslo died. It is really wierd that so many have died. Although we aren't 18 anymore! Back then, I thought I would be dead or killed by the time I reached 30, so I guess we are not doing so bad after all.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/12/2003 12:33:04 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Roberto:

I'm doing great. I can't wait to see all of you guys for a little craziness.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/12/2003 12:39:31 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Roberto and the rest of the boys.

Do you guys remember the Athenians football game!

Remember Perpich (gus were you the other) was one of the referrees and the Athenians fans were sitting in the stands pounding hammers and bats on the bleachers throughout the game.

Talk about intiminating!!! Hey, at least we had the balls to play them. No one else would.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/12/2003 05:27:44 By Stephen Bischoff
Chuck,
Wasn't there a pledge named Brubacker that
we teed off on at Ladd's house. If I remember
correctly you and I didn't want him to make
it. Find out if he made it and if he's coming.
That football game against Athenians is one
I'll never forget. They told brother George Mendoza that if he played they were going to
shot him. They never fought one on one, they
were chicken shits!! After the game three of
them jumped me and I had to bite my way out of
it.(I guess Tyson must have heard about that)
Hope all is well with family! Say hello to
Mom and Dad

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/12/2003 11:40:49 By john scopetta

Have no fear I am hear and I will save your ass from those BAB!!! Athenians that tried to intimidate you guys.
They once showed up at my house on the Key in full force because they claimed that I was trying to recruit Bobby Guell into Stags. We went to Guell,s house the next day and he told them that I was his Brother and if anybody had a problem with me they had a problem with him. They were shocked when they realized we were ready to take the five of them on.

By the way, for those of you that may not know Bobby Guell and I stayed close friends for many years until his untimely death by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head a few years back.

On a Good note is great to see the Stags Brotherhood come alive on this great site and we should thank the Brothers that brought it to life.

I suggested to Gaston that we have a football game between the brothers from the fities and those from the sixties to to determine once and for all who had the better athletes. Or maybe Golf?

Hey! How come we don't hear anything from the girls? Betsi, Janet, Carol, Ginger let's hear your side of the story. John S.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/13/2003 09:14:50 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Steve:

I remember Brubaker. He made it in and turned out to be a really good guy. What about Moose (I think his name was Richard Mahan)?

I thought about Norman Dicks the other day. He needs to be put on the deceased list also.

Hey, remember the days we used to skip school and go to sewer beach.

We also need to get in touch with Kennedy.

Has anyone heard from Ajar?

Chuck

Can some of the guys that were in Stags prior to the breakup (71?) try to determine who the historian was at that time? When Tommy Ott (68)had those duties I remember that the photo books went all the way back to the 50's. Three complete volumes. ( No offense intended to our Brothers of the 50's). If anyone has any info on this, please email me or post on this thread. TIA

Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/13/2003 06:55:21 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Herb, Stags didn't breakup in 71, it was mid-70s. I spoke to arturo about the picture books, last known person to have them was Ralph tezanos.Arturo is going to ck it out.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/13/2003 07:04:26 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, do you recall any of the younger guys being tough ?????Must be as the get older they remember events differently. I,believe golf would be more appropriate of a game. IS GOLF A SPORT ????? Chocho ,(CHI CHI Rodriguez) and Arturo,(lee Trevino )Will represent us well.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/13/2003 07:15:32 By john scopetta

You are wrong Herb, It is your house. As we say in spanish mi casa is su casa. Next time come on in. The area has been great to live in the last five years and the house is wonderful.

What have you been doing? Are you still flying? I see your picture in the web site you look great in the picture, is that a recent picture?

I remember listening to your radio broadcast when you were doing the weather in Miami. Lets stay active on the Web site and get lots of stories posted.

Whatever you do, DO NOT!! get into a golf match with Isidro and Toto it could be dangerous
to your wallet.... Talk to you soon John S.

John
Why don't we make a mini-golf tour. at the
Biltmore on Saturday before party. See who interested and reserve tee times. We can include
all the pros but we need real handicaps. Guston
was always a ladies man, can,t remember the other side of his comment. I am making reserv.
to stay at Biltmore Friday and Saturday.
Great site !!!

Let me know.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/14/2003 03:51:27 By Herb Stebbins 68

John,

I'm still flying for United. I'm based in Chicago, so that's quite a challenge. You really have a good memory, that was 1973-74 that I was broadcasting traffic for WINZ. Back then there was only me in a Cessna 172, now it's a Bell Jet Ranger and a crew of three. About the picture, I look much younger now, just ask Garcia. I second thought you better not. Looking forward to seeing you. Take care John.

Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/14/2003 07:05:34 By Class 68
Guys, for those that play golf. Take a good look at the 1958 Stags Composite, we are being challenged by De Fore @ De Mello.Chaplin and Secretary . LOOK OUT this could be trouble. Don't forget they have the advantage. Most of us were not allowed in golf courses until after segregation.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/14/2003 07:15:18 By john scopetta

Hey Steven, we are ready to play some golf!!! Roberto is going to host a seminar on tranquility at 7:30 AM on Saturday morning. After that we can begin our golf tournament. I will call the Biltmore tomorrow and make reservations for at least three foursomes. If you think there will be more than that, maybe we can get additional tee times.

Herb, I remember your broadcast very clearly I can imagine flying around in those thunderstorms must the been hell. Youre absolutely right a bell ranger would be the way to fly you could soom in over a South Beach and look at all the topless women on the Beach. Of course, I would tell my wife I was looking for weed lines. Sea weed that is.

Manny Garcia, I know you had the best time at the Gables 30 Reunion. On the floor with Ann mc Dade was a true site to behold and you made a brother proud, keep up the good work at the Stags reunion. Love Ya. John S.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/14/2003 08:15:36 By Jose (Toto) Ortega, 69'
Jack, the Golf Tournament is getting organized by Tom Schultz and the information is under the
Reunion Registration, sign up. Bye the way, Isidro is playing with a 22 handicap.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/14/2003 10:09:45 By john scopetta

Toti, the problem with Ike is not the handicap all we do is devide it by 2 and we have the # John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/15/2003 09:21:06 By little d , big M
In reference to the aspersions to Brother DeFoor being the chaplain, he was also the best broad-jumper and breaststroker at dear ole Gables. Besides he was sick the day of that composite.
Additionally, I was out of high school before I found out there were actually 18 holes not 16 like we used to play. Brother Hager gave me my first lesson. He said you couldn't tee the ball up on the fairway. I still think it's a dumb rule.

Batiremos algunds Stags del bebe'.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/15/2003 07:51:12 By john scopetta

It looks like the brothers from 57 are prepared to challenge us to a golf tournament.

This should be very interesting since Bischoff, Suarez,Scopetta,Jauregui and Ortega have only recently taken up the sport.

However we will rise to the occation and represent the 60s with true stags Honor.

I remember the athenian fight at the youth center. i don't remember who it was, but i remember sitting on the hood of a car and seeing this guy from athenians come over me with a hammer and hit someone in stags in the head with it. i took whoever it was to a house next door and washed his head off with a hose!! i have never forgotten that scene in my mind! golf? are girls invited? i can't wait to see you all. janet

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/16/2003 05:08:55 By Herb Stebbins 68
Great to hear from you Janet. When I saw your post I couldn't help but think about the time you "Papered" my house. If my memory serves me right you were with Peggy S. I didn't recall hearing anything because the stereo was up too high blasting "The Beachboys". Enough said! The fellow that got hit in the head was Leo Lanieve. It was a bowling pin, not a hammer. You and I plus a few more took him back to his home to clean him up. He lived right next to the Biltmore Hotel. It will be great to see you again. Take care, Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/16/2003 05:57:47 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Herb, it was at the Coral Gables youth center .He got hit both by a pin ball hammer and a bowling pin. Luis Cruz hit him with the hammer. That whole fight started out because of Chuck Helmly got in the fight at P.A.L with a guy from coral park Titans .Loui Laneave, hung out with Columbus Titans. Athenians found out about it when I told Lazaro Rivera. They came to fight with us against them. (Luis Cruz,Lazaro,Merlano,Toby,Bobby Guell,Butifaras,Moco and the rest of those boys. That Janet has a hell of a memory. I am sure I was not involved in it. I was always the level headed one.

Hey Guys,

remember me? I'm sure you all thought I dropped off the face of the earth!! I am alive & well and planning to come to this reunion!! I think about you all and all the fun of those days often.
I was broken hearted to miss the HS 20th reunion, but I had a good excuse-lived in California and I was 8mos. pregnant. Have also lived out of the country with my husband and son for a number of years. Don't play golf (I'm a yoga girl), but I'd loved to sit in the bar (Gaston) and have a drink & catch up after all these years. John Scoppeta-thank you for your email, I will be in touch. Cielo..where are you? I've been looking for you for years!! I am in the process of moving to Bethesda, MD outside of DC this summer with my family. see you all soon-can not wait.
I don't remember all those fights-I hope everyone has calmed down!!

Pam

Hey Guys:

Keep me posted on the Golf game. Janet, I can only take one Annika at a time, keep Gaston company at the 19th hole. Pam, great to hear from you. Cielo quit telling lies, I did not stand you up in high school, it was Ponce The Spring Dance 1964 the other girl bought the tickets and she insisted in going, what's a guy to do??? I remember, I use to deliver The Herald to your house, after the dance your Mom never paid me again.

John.

Paul Johnstone is listed on classmates.com I sent him a message on 3/31/03 with the address for the Stags website and Jim Kavney's E-mail address. He read the message but hasn't responded. If any of you guys have a full membership to classmates.com, try contacting him.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/20/2003 10:16:42 By john scopetta

Hi Janet, Long time no see. To get the story correct once and for all, the guy that got hit on the head was not Lui, it was his brother and it was at the Youth Center and if we would have known that it would be one traumatic memory for you we would of kicked Hemlly's butt for starting the fight in the first place.
You told me that your best memory was when Raul set the motel room in fire while George, you, Ruthie and I went to the movies and we had to sleep in the car because the maneger evicted us at 2AM. Love Ya as always.... John

John, read the Thread by Jim Kavney. "Message about Bob Ajar". It explains it all. Bob would love to hear from you. Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 10:33:58 By Pam Porter 1968
This is so much fun & great to be in touch with you after so many years. I made my reservation for the Biltmore yesterday. John and Gaston-wonderful to be talking with you via email...you all were so sweet to me even tho I was a traitor and went out with a guy from Tekes! Altho I guess I did go back and forth. John, I have lost touch with Ruthie as well. would love to find her-I've tried. It's tough with women as the last names change. Hello Manuel (I need a ride..can you pick me up at the drugstore? thanks..) I'll be racking my brain for memories to share when I see you. I especially recall magical times on the Keys..on your boat John, catching lobsters. I still don't remember all the ass kicking, but then boys will be boys and I did have my head in the clouds a lot. I'm not a lawyer John, I'll save the life details for when I see you. love pam

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 12:01:35 By Janet Eaton
John, stop with the public stories about us sleeping in motel rooms!! I have matured, but am still always ready for a good time. Pam, how great to hear from you and am so happy you will be at the reunion. Of course you don't remember the fights, you were too much of a lady to attend one. I remember you as a tall beautiful girl with lots of poise and class. me, i was running with the boys!!! i have been talking with cielo. i too, was looking for her forever. she is also coming to the reunion. john, i will come if george doesn't come. it has been 33 years since i've seen or spoken to george and from what i have heard about his life i don't think we have much in common anymore. however, don't get me wrong, if he comes, i will be the first one to plant a huge kiss on his lips!!! and manny i don't hold a candle to annika, she is younger, prettier and a much better player. i don't need to play with you guys, i'll play alone and bother you all all day to play through!!!! janet

Glad to see that we are acting and responding to each other like the old gang. (sorry I meant club).

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 06:24:08 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Chocho, spoke to arturo this morning he says he is tired of kicking you ass in the golf course. That you always quit counting stokes beyond the 12th hole. Is he telling the truth????? Remember stags honor.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 06:40:38 By Manny Garcia
Gaston:

Arturo is full of S...!, I get bored by the 12th hole having to wait for him hit his ball 3 times to catch up with my drive. He reminds me of a Pez dispenser, his pockets are full of golf balls and he drops one on every shot and says" I found it".
Pam, I'll pick you up, remember that old MG sedan I use to drive, you were crazy to ride in that old bucket, see you soon.
Janet, if you must come out on the course, could you be our drink lady?

Manuel

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:01:04 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Chocho,Have a little respect for our beautiful girls. It is my duty as a good brother to make sure that I'am responsible for the protection of our sweethearts @ sponsors during our reunion. Don't forget had it not been for me none of you would have had dates in high school. We will be waiting for all of you at the club house.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:06:30 By Cielo
Ok Manuel, Ponce or Gables what difference does it make. My mother is to be congratulated for not paying you for those papers! It's great to be a part of this. I keep crying - I think it's menopause!!! Somehow I knew we would all come back together. The strange thing is that it seems like yesterday, and I know that each of us has been through all kinds of situations. John, it sounds like you're looking for a lawyer! I remember the fights and, especially, the one where Isidro broke Sam's girlfriend's (can't remember her name)brother's jaw. That was grand!!! I can also attest to a fight Isidro and Toto got into at the toll gate. Toto was drunk and Isidro was digging in his pocket for a quarter. They got into a fight because Toto thought Isidro was going gay on him. Lot's of fun and lot's of stories.

I work with Native Americans and it's like being at a full time Stags party. I can't wait to see each and evey one of you. John, what did you do with that ole' mustang? Pam and Janet, we won't lose touch again. Now I am starting to cry again. Oh, s--- I can't stop.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:18:17 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Cielo,Mannuel never had a real date in in his life, after all he got lucky in Jr high because like he said the girl bought the ticket. If Isidro got credited for breaking Sam's girl friends brothers jaw thats ok .But it was Ignacio Pascual who actually did it in front of B.K across from ponce the night of our keg party in sewer beach. Her name was Rena Moyers.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:25:41 By Joe Herrera
After reading your emails you guys from late 60s on sure sound like a bunch of rough guys. I'm so glad to have been a Stag in the quiet years. My goodness fights, tackle football games, getting quicked out of motels it sets my hair on end, sure we had a few encounters but people left us alone for if not we would kick their ass. Those left behind after 65/66 must have had a rough time, I'm glad you could handle it.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:49:24 By john scopetta

Hi Cielo welcome back in to our livesit is so wonderful to see you posting stories on the Web site. Last time I saw you was at South Miami hospital so you must have a child close to my sons age.

I cant believe that Janet is complaining about stories involving hotel rooms???? What about when we went up the coast to Cocoa Beach . That was really great.

Janet U cant play in our foursome and don't be fooled by all the B. S. these guys are posting about their golf games. They are much better talkers then players.

Actually now that I think about it, I had to spend that famous night in front of your house sleeping in the car with George. I wish we could at least get one story straight. ...John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 07:50:43 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Joe ,thanks to your class we had no choice but to do the things we did. We looked up to you bad boys for the way you were and all it got us was our butts kicked . We left in 68 as rulers of not gables high , but of all dade county. Ask our 1968 brothers. guys help me out on this one .....Love you ,Joe

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 08:26:46 By john scopetta

Janet,I apologize, of course you can play with our foursome any time. My mistake,...john
To those brothers from other years visiting our web site, dont be misguided by some of the stories you read. They have a tendency to become the larger with age.

Mr. Herrera, you and Gonzalo were pioneers in allowing Cubans to become members of Stags. We thank you to this date for that privilege.
I will tell you that we were not as bad as it sounds, actually some of us participated in many wholesome activities such as, donut sales, carwashes, and money laundering oops....John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 08:27:07 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Scopetta, since we are now bringing in the past. Do you remember the night we went to Paula Solomons house and her parents showed up ???? your cougar broke down and we spent the night at the golf course???? What was the Blondies name that hung out with her ??? Also Mr.Surfur Daytona beach ,surf board coming off the rack and wipping out half the town???

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 08:33:42 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
John, they were not pioneers. They showed up on Americas Shores on Mark Leopolds Ship lines.Mark was one of Gonzalos best friend in jr high .To this day Herrera correct me if I'am wrong the 1st Jewish brother.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 09:42:04 By Terrence W. Grant
he wasn't first jewish brother there were several before him in my class we had pete swartzand his brother followed close behind

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 10:44:19 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Terrence, I'm sure they were some back then. But according to Mark he was the 1st from our days in modern times. Most of us weren't born back then. but thanks for updating us on past history.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/21/2003 10:58:22 By Janet Eaton
o.k. guys. first to you manny. drink lady??? i don't think so. you don't want me to play because you don't want to get beat by a girl!! tell it like it is.... you can be my caddy!!! next to you john. John, i always considered you one of my best buds. first you talk about sleeping in motels together and now you are publically posting about our trip to cocoa beach. Don't you dare. don't take that trip any further!! and gaston, you have been my friend since we were 10. thanks again for sticking up for me and protecting me. cielo, stop crying. put on your party shoes. we can't have a keg party on sewer beach again (i don't think it's still there) but we can party like we did in the stags days at the biltmore. i'll tell you all about menopause. been there done that. by the way, who was president of stags in 68? and also, none of you guys seem to have changed much. janet

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/22/2003 07:25:44 By Terrence W. Grant
Gaston: Are you saying modern times is 1966 and 1957 is yesteryear looks like 9 years to me...pete swartz is missing at present but I'm sure that if this gets back to him he will show at reunion and be right behind deMello

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/22/2003 09:12:56 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Gus:

If I remember correctly (which is getting harder and harder as the years go by!!!), 1968 was the first year Stags recruited brothers from high schools other than Gables. I remember rushing people from Palmetto, Southwest, Columbus, Raiford(just kidding),etc. It was all part of our plan to expand our power base throughout South Florida and be the most dominate force in the area.

Speaking of hotel rooms, who was the brother from columbus who was throwing matresses out of the third floor window one night during one of our adventures. Steve or Roberto, I think you guys were there.

Brother Terrence , Looking at the 1956 composite you seem to me like a real likeable guy, after all you are the only old timer on our thread. We appreciate and respect any and all comments you may say. By the way ,its 1968, thats a decade Plus. All in good fun(if you want our respect). Keep DeMello out of it. We have about 25 new Brothers dying to meet him.Further more brother Humphries has not made those tickets that I offered to buy available to me yet. Keep writing in ,you would love the guys from my years.

Herrera

Monkey see monkey do!!! I remember a rush party at Tahiti Beach, were you did a mexican hat dance on this guy's head, and then the little guy.... what was his name??? Gonzalo; got in a few kicks too.

Janet, just pulling your chain, but ask Jackie what we normally call the drink lady, I cleaned it up for you. If you want to play it'll be great but you can't have any of my Advil.

Cielo, don't get emotional on us now, you said that you felt it was yesturday, hell, I can't remember what I ate this AM.

Gaston, maybe you're right about the dates, but don't forget you're about 4 or 5 years older than all of us!!!

Manuel

O K Guys, We need to find Jeran McClain. She's the only one missing from our 68 sponsors.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/22/2003 09:13:06 By john scopetta

Janet, on worry about you you claimed to have matured but you dont sound like it.

Cielo, I wish I still had the Mustang it would be worth a lot of money today. Unfortunately I drive a truck now and it is GREAT!!!!

Manuel, I dont get your comments about the drink lady, are you referring to the Colombian one on key Biscayne, then I would understand what you mean but J is going to kick your ass. However you are the smart one so please explain.

A Gaston, I am still waiting for my lunch, Roberto came over today and had lunch with me and all he talks is meditation and harmony. He must weigh about 50 pounds. He signs off on all his e-mail with the words peace and balance a little strange, I dont know if he can play golf anymore. This really in is looking good...John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/23/2003 09:58:19 By Don Humphries
John, Checked out the article about you by Charlies Nobles. Glad to see that you practiced where the action was and not with those pussys with numbers 49 and lower.
Bro Don #51

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/23/2003 10:35:28 By john scopetta
Stags brothers stick together, you cant imagine how much we had to pay brother Nobles to write the article. Johnstone and I knew that Mr. Nobles was a brother at the time he wrote the article, and if we begged him enough he would put our picture in the paper.
I was always concerned about Paul playing behind me, I wanted to play middle linebacker as in 60 key defense, so I could stand up and he would make me get down in the 50 key on all fours in front of him, NOT GOOD!!!!!
By the way don't be intimidated by the hoods, we wore them for special effects, in anticipation of getting a part in a future movie to be named Star Wars. john

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/26/2003 11:53:01 By Jose Herrera
Gaston I would never say NO to Billy (Bear) even though I could handle myself pretty well I remember an open house full of Miami High Titans where there was a fight a minute, I pushed this guy before I looked and YES IT WAS THE LEGEND BIG DADDY PERKINS (for those of you that dont know he was 6'3, 350 pounds and loved to fight. I did the sensible thing and looked for shelter behind Genie Nesmith (Billy's girl later wife) and Big Daddy made BIG MISTAKE he pushed Genie. Out of the blue a fist (no lie) measuring 37 inches across came out of the blue (I thought it was GOD) and hit Big Daddy and actually moved him a few inches, the fight went on to the bathroom where THE FIST FROM GOD hit Big Daddy so hard that he fell in a stall TOTALLY removing the entire toilet assembly from the floor, leaving Big Daddy on the floor. That will teach the sonofabitch to fool with me.

Hi everyone...I will be out of touch for a bit as I am going to be moving over the next two months,
so will be in & out of town. See you all at the Biltmore!! It will be great to catch up. janet, thanks for the kind words...however, while I was being quietly poised you were obviously having much more fun! Hope you will join Cielo & I for a girl's lunch, drink, whatever. Pam
p.s. I think you were ALL legends in your own time. Just thinking of Miami makes me long for paella.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/27/2003 03:08:55 By Janet Eaton
pam. i'll be right there with you and cielo for whatever you want to arrange. can't wait to see you. found ruth sigler. talked with her an hour yesterday! left a message for jeran today with her husband's answering service. maybe we will get lucky and have all four sponsors of '68 at the reunion. they will need to give us an award for being there for them in 1968 and again in 2003!!!

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/27/2003 04:35:39 By Gaston Ruiz 68
Herrera, you were always a good story teller. As a 9th grader, gonzalo took me to some of those open houses at the Knights of something in flagler .I do remember Mr. Adams taking care of a few people. One I have never forgotten was in an open house when this so called bad ass hit Billy in the face a couple of times before he decided to totally make hamburger meat out of him. this was that cuban guy they called EL JEFE INDIO. from miami high he hung out with saxons. Herb and I were talking about it the other day.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/27/2003 11:16:34 By Jose Herrera
We should all go to history of stags club and learn things we did not know about Stags. Its great to see old guys from 49 and up talk about those days.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 02:54:30 By ART ABNEY
Yeah, speaking of history and tradition,do any of you guys remember the words to "THE SONG"?

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 03:48:12 By ART ABNEY
Gus,I have this vivid memory of watching through a real high chain link fence like a basket ball court or something somewhere I'd never been before, watching this latin guy literally flying through the air while being pummeled by the legendary Adams. As the poor guy was running away I remember him saying in this real deep voice..."let him go".I was awestruck cause I'd never seen anything like that before (a harbinger of things to come...)so I think the scene was a bunch of TIKES hanging with the STAGS guys.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 04:14:09 By ART ABNEY
hello Chuck!Looking forward to seeing you, brother. And has anyone heard from Steve Bischoff?I wonder if he remembers the day we met.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 07:42:32 By Herb Stebbins 68
"THE SONG" That Art is referring to was our Sweetheart Song. At our annual sweetheart formal dinners we would sing this song to them followed by the Stags Club chant. The words to this song start out "The flowers that I seek never grew before, the birds never sang what they sung" or something like that. If any of you can get the words, please post them. I'll never forget the expressions on the faces of our Sponsors/Sweethearts when we sang that song to them at the end of that evening.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 08:17:08 By Herb Stebbins 68
"Another Billy Adams Story" Fresh out of Junior High I got rushed by both Stags and Counts. One evening while being rushed by Stags I was out with Billy at Hot Shops. We sat down and ordered some food and guess who walks up and sits down? Phil Tracy and Ron Fulks (God rest his soul) Billy didn't say a thing as Phil and Ron started their Counts sales pitch. This went on for about five minutes until our food arrived. As the waitress was putting the food down Billy GLANCED at Phil and Ron and within a second (it seemed less then that) both got up and left the table. When they left and before starting to eat I looked up at Billy. All he did was smile!

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 10:05:39 By Chuck Helmly
Gus:

What was the name of that real bad ass aparment complex (I think the buildings were pink) that we used to go to. I believe we used to pick up Nelson from there. It was somewhere near 8 Street. There were always fights there. We used to drink beers on the corner. I remember someone telling me that one night they rode through there and someone threw a bicycle through the windshield. The rumor was that even the police and fire department were afraid to go in there.

STAG'S CLUB SWEETHEART SONG
The flowers that I see never grew before. The birds never sang what they sing. A love that I never knew before, is now my everything. The light in her eyes is a paradise, revealing a heaven for two. Her lips hold the bliss of a fragrant kiss, like violets wet with dew. One theme my whole heart is singing, a dream of a love come true. And over her heart is the seal of my love, the emblem of purple and white!

This is from memory. May not be exactly correct but it is close. In my time I think the song was used to close each weekly meeting. Also, the first meeting after a Stag pinned his girl all the brothers would gather outside her home and sing the song.

A request on Stag history - I have some knowledge of the early history until about 1961. Will some of the brothers from the 1960s and 1970s fill us old farts in on that time period. Use the Stag History thread. Thanks.
John Dannelly 1957

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/28/2003 06:16:51 By Gaston Ruiz 68
Brother Dannelly , What a memory. I found a piece of paper from when I got in Stags in 1966. It has written on it several things a pledge and future brother should know and remember; (1) I don't think, I don't contemplate , I don't anticipate, I just reckon, Sir. (2) Hady Kady (3) Sweet heart song. I'm sure some of the words might have changed a little over the years . During my years in Stags, knowing the guys in Stags back then who knows what they were saying. But if you permit me to update it,it says as follows : The flowers that I see never grew before, the birds never sang what they sing. A love that I never knew before,(it) is now my everything, the light in her eyes is a paradise revealing a heaven for two. Her lips hold a bliss of a fragrant kiss like violets wet with dew. One theme my ( HEART) is singing, a dream of a love ( DIVINE) and over her heart ( LIES ) the seal of my love, the emblem, of ( TAU- DELTA - TAU ).

Chuck, thanks for the heads up. I'm flashing back to the night Bischoff, Dicks and I rolled my Anglia in the field we called Vienam over by your family home. We were barred from the dance at CCHS. So for lack of contact we probably went o Pappy's to watch Steve assault some college fraternity guy.Scopetta wasn't there to scare anybody off - we were on our own. To many fun nights with the boys, beer, broads and whatever we come across. Shit, I didn't think I'd make it to 22. I'll pop bye to see you all. Great opening picture of Bob Nelson dancing in 1959.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 00:32:38 By Stephen Bischoff '69
Mike,
Its good to hear from you, however you can,t
tell any of our old secrets. I spoke to a Stags
brother who graduated in '57 and he was telling me how the 50's was the Ozzie and Harriet era.
They didn't fight. Was Nelson part of that family? He fought all the time! I hope Nelson
comes to the reunion. Spoke to George Saturday and told him about reunion, he's coming. He works out at the Biltmore every day. I was in Miami last weekend for Gabby Ferrer birthday dinner and
drank until 4 AM with Jim Korth at his house in Grove. Hate Miami, too many Martini's. Keep in touch and take care!

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 04:57:35 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
You are right Gus. The place was called "Pastarita" I remember some really crazy things hapening there.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 05:32:09 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Mike and Steve. I remember seeing you guys the night you rolled Flynn's car in the place we called Viet Nam. I think I had a date that night, otherwise I probably would have been with you.

Pappy's Pizza-man that brings back a lot of memories! We had some really great times there. Remember the apartment buildings behind Pappy's. I remember a major confrontation there one night. I think Bischoff and Perpich were involved in that one.

I also remember going to (in some cases trying to get into) the UM frat parties.

Hey remember the Collisium. That was also a pretty cool place.

How about PAL on Bird Road, Hot Shops and Pizza Palace, and the football games at Central Stadium.

How about the Big Daddy's on Douglas Road and Coral Way. Hey Mendoza, remember the night in Sambos when you wanted to eat steak!

Great to talk to you yesterday Mike. Keep in touch.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 06:20:23 By john scopetta

Steve you are right whenever you went anywhere with Nelson you had to better be ready for action. He would always find a good reason why someone needed to get pounded.

Does anyone remember the stags campout on quail roost road, someone lit a can of gasoline, on fire and Holloway kicked it burning his foot. Is that correct?

As we were taking him to the hospital i smashed in to the back of David Edwards car and destroyed my Mustang.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 07:05:54 By Gaston Ruiz 68
John ,remember the apartments behind pappys the night Algomany got his head smashed by a beer mug.??? You and perpich along with the rest of us took over the apartments and remodeled the interiors and everything else that got in our way.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 10:11:57 By john scopetta
Gaston, the girls name was Jan McKinley, and I don't think we were supposed to be there.
I don't remember all these fights you keep talking about, I was in to peace and harmony with Roberto.
Mike is good to see your post...John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/29/2003 11:29:53 By Gaston Ruiz 68
John, I was the peace loving guy. You got me in trouble . Remember the night at Paula Solomom's ??you and me with Paula @ Jan. her parents coming home your trusted cougar not starting and we spending the night in the golf course,??Hoping to get to my house and getting my dads car, except my dad was coming home from work and caught us walking home down bird road instead at 7am.

Hey Gus:

I remember the night behind Pappy's. I remember a lot of blood, and a major apartment remodeling. I believe brother Bischoff was also involved in that one.

Remember the Collisium. That was a pretty cool place. How about Central Stadium, PAL, Hot Shopps and Pizza Palace.

How about skipping school and going to Sewer Beach.

Good to hear from you Mike I remember the night you guys rolled your car in Viet Nam, and the Columbus dances and Brother Leo. I remember one night Brother Leo refused to let us in the dance. After pleading with him for 30 minutes, he finally let us in. As soon as we walked in the door, Brother Steve hit some guy in the face with his shoe. Needless to say we were asked to leave, and were forever banned from Columbus dances.

Speaking of famous Miami bad boys, I remember some legends about your brother John.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 10:48:46 By Herb Stebbins 68
John, I remember the camp out on Quail Roost Rd. Holloway's burns didn't come from gasoline, but did come from igniting volatile gasses. I think they had to surgically remove his underwear.
BTW, what ever happened to your Mustang? Was that a 1966 GT ? Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 11:30:34 By Isidro Jauregui (68)
Gaston, Arturo, Nelson and every other guy that rode in Toto's and mine 195? Chevy. The one with the hole in the floor. Lot's of good memories there. Going to Pastorita to steel cases of beer and being persecuted by Cubans with machetes. I was part of that fight with Argonaniz behind BK that got real ugly, also a few weeks later we went back for more and they were waiting for us.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 12:12:58 By Gaston Ruiz 68
Isidro, how well do I remember, if it wasn't for the Cuban guys that worked at BK , I probably wouldn't be here today. Alan Washington and Pat Font dragged me inside after that guy that I hit over the head with the mop handle shook it off, came after me and knocked me out like nothing happened. Those were the good days.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 06:28:58 By Manny Garcia
Hey Guys:

Lets hear some stories about the fight with Counts in the Key; who started that? Abney drove me to the hospital that day when I popped my shoulder out and I missed most of it, as I was leaving the hospital brother Bob Nelson was coming in to get his head stitched.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 07:25:46 By Gaston Ruiz 68
Chocho, you got us all involved in a fight to always remenber .Residents of Key Biscayne probably put your picture in the post office as most wanted. I'am sure Steve Bass hasn't forgotten. Too bad your arm poppped out of socket. alumni brothers got involved and thanks to Bob Nelson we survived . Then life couldn't get worst for some of us. I decide to go to your house to see how you were doing and the next thing I know WE ARE SURROUNDED BY COUNTS in your front yard. you go inside ,I jump in my car and down red road I go .Thank god for the gables and so.miami cops that stopped me for running every red light north until I reach allens drugs store. Steve trescott lost his two front teeth at BK by lenny Reyna and all of this (OVER A GIRL) thank you Chocho.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 08:08:46 By john scopetta

Herby it was a Mustang two plus two 289, 1966, white with beige interior. Herby were where you during all these fights, you are the toughest guy in
Stags, other than me, and I dont remember any of these fights. I certainly dont remember the gaston ever geting beat up.

I am sorry to hear about Robert Wood, I din't know him well but him he was a very nice person. I see Berta once in a while....John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/30/2003 08:43:58 By Gaston Ruiz 68
John, don't forget I was only safe when I was with you,Herbie,Perpich,Isidro Arturo and the Helmly Brothers. But you are right .I didn't get beat often . Reason why is that I was always protecting our best interests .(The Girls), otherwise you guys would never would have had dates. ISIDRO WAS MY GUARDIAN ANGEL A COUPLE OF TIMES IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY.Co-eds Shipwreck and After High School in Coconut Grove in an open house.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 09:05:18 By Herb Stebbins 68
John, I didn't know that I had a reputation as a bad ass till your post. I don't think I ever got in trouble. You, Perpich, Gaston, Garcia and Nelson maybe but never me. I couldn't fight my way out of a wet paper bag. As far as remembering fights, I can remember a few. The one on the Key really stands out. Every minute of it!
John, did you play any "sand lot football" before highschool? I know Johnstone did and like yourself he was great. I will try to find a picture of you given to me by Tommy Ott's Mom after his death. It was part of a whole group of pictures he took at football games. It was taken of you making a open field tackle during the Miami High/Gables game in 67 or 68.(I think it was Miami High) Tommy took the picture with a camera with a telephoto lense. I guarantee, you have nothing like it. I will try my best to find it and get it to you. Herb

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 10:28:51 By Mark Leopold
I would agree that Billy was a really tough guy. I would also add that you could not ask for a better brother. He always watched out for us. A truly sweet guy. Jose will vouch that the beloved Larry Volonino was the same type of guy.
What a loss!

Best to all see you at the party.

Leopold

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 02:22:06 By Janet Eaton
yes gaston did look out for the girls. always. in fact, it was gaston that introduced me to george. so he is correct. he found us all dates and in many cases guys we stayed with for a long time. sounds like you guys were fighting every second! i remember fights but i don't remember so many. any leads on jeran pass them my way. we are trying to get all the sponsors at the reunion. have three out of four so far.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 06:50:42 By Gaston Ruiz 68
Mark, I for one, will agree with you 110%. The guys that grew up with me from elememtary thru high school and those that I had the good fortune to have around, that became Stags Brothers, always looked up to you guys with a lot of respect. I could sit here and list all of you , but it will take me forever. Stags was more than a club to all us . Stags was fun, friends, sadness, happiness. We were and are like family .Thanks to the guys from your days, it was an honor and a priveledge to be a brother in Stags. Anyone of us could have been something else, but a Stag is always a Stag as we are seeing now more than ever, as we prepare for the first time to unite together, all the past generations, that made it possible....Thank you, TO ALL YOU OLD FARTS.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 08:10:45 By John Scopetta 68
Gaston, the night we got in to the fight behind BK I ended up hiding in Ponce Junior high for about two hours until the cops left somebody was with me, does anyone remember that? When we busted through the door some guy smacked me in the head and I had a big bump on my head but we destroyed the place and them.

Herby you were so strong and tough that no one f...k with you, that is the reason you never got in to trouble but those guys from Counts were terrified of you.

Janet, Cielo introduced me to Ruth and I introduced Jeran to Raul, and Cielo to Isidro. Don't give Gaston all the credit.

Remember our Stags formal senior year in that hall over by calle 8, when we put Nelson in charge of the booze and all he got was 15 cases of beer at Barbarita Market across the street. Arturo got to get Nelson to come.

Herby I played in many sandlot games including our pickup stags game when you almost kicked my butt, If it would not have been for Gaston and Arturo Tezanos backing you down you might have killed me.

Toughest Guys in Stags I vote for Isidro after a few beers he would have taken on Mike Tyson in his prime. Toughest guy on the Golf coarse, Steve Bishoff I have seen Steve intimidate more golfers with his driver than Tiger woods. And I dont mean hitting the ball.....John

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 05/31/2003 08:26:46 By Gaston Ruiz 68
John , we did have lots of guys in Stags that were tough back then, but lets not forget those quiet types we had that were allways there. Johnstone to me was one of those guys. Remember the Stags Athenian Softball game at Gables High Field ???? not to mention any names ,but paul was tested and none of those bad boys came forward

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 06/01/2003 09:10:48 By Mark Leopold
I lived right near Jim Perpich and got to know him well. I played baseball with him at the South Miami Junior High field every summer and he was a hell of an athlete.

My senior year I was playing quarterback against Ching Tang and we we're kicking their ass. Rick Pippinger put Jimmy in at QB the last series of the game and guess what? The very first play he broke his shoulder.

Anyone have an idea of where he might be?

Best,

Leopold

WE NEED YOU GUYS TO REGISTER AND START SENDING IN YOUR MONEY TO MAKE THIS REUNION ONE TO REMEMBER . NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 06/02/2003 07:59:42 By Terrence W. Grant
Thanks Gaston:

Yes we need to get behind the guys that organized the reunion. I'm sure the group of 66-70 will want to continue their discussions in person at the Biltmore just 60 some odd days away. In order for the committee (i'm not on it)to push the Biltmore for more service and a better party we need to show a strong force in the advanced registration of the guys. Needless to say it is necessary in the ordering of food etc.

This is Susie Gibson. Sister to Larry, Cielo and Johnny Gibson. Johnny is traveling and asked that I send this e-mail for him. So if I have the incorrect spelling of names please forgive me.

Gaston, I sent you a e-mail of all Johnny's phone numbers, addresses, etc. Please let me know that you received the e-mail. Johnny would really like to hear from you.

From Johnny:

Great to hear from you Chuck! But where are the other Brothers? Andy Bretz (?) - Where is John Caruso? He has all the scrapbooks. Would like to hear from everyone!

Everyone needs to get in shape a little bit just in case some Athenians show up cause there just may be a fight!

This site is GREAT!! I know many of you and the others are legends who I heard about from guys like Chuck and Tom Helmly, Steve Bischoff, Norman Dicks, Chip Templeton and others. I never got into a fight that was not the fault of one of the above guys. I see where there is much chatter about some fight that Chuck Helmly started. He started many of them and I ended up with a headache each time. They were ALL his fault! Even those at FSU...

Well, I am an old man now and my wife won't let me hang around with Chuck anymoe. SoI lead a more peaceful life-

I hope life has been good to you all-

Jerry Ford- Hey bud, I went through the Academy in 1975. I ran into Sgt. Andy Travis (PSD) who in the past had chased me on many occasions both on foot and vehicle. He could never catch me and considered me a challenge. The first day of BLE 18 he walks up to me and says:what the hell are you doing here?
He ended up to be my boss while in Central. He was a great road SGT... The last I heard he was some place in Colorado as a Deputy. They issued him a 30-30, a Jeep and a horse....

Take care my friend, stay away from the 41b's and may your life be QRU...

Art, tell me about it. Glen Cornielson would make me lay in the back of his El Camino And he would procede to dump a bunch of live ones on top of me and some other brothers and drive to Jimmy's Hurricane to humiliate us.

Re: Class of 66-70'sPosted at 06/04/2003 10:15:47 By Chuck Helmly (1969)
Hey Dennis:

Your right my brother. I was possessed by demons and running with the devil during those crucial formative years and consequently, temporairily insane! Therefore, I was not responsible for any of my actions. I appologize, as Brother Leo once said, if I led any of you innocent boys astray.

Since my exorcism some 20 years ago, I am now the model citizen.

But, as Bruce Springstien once said, "...mama told me not to look at the face of the sun, but mama thats where the fun is..." !!!!

It is true, those days are gone forever. Today we live in a much different "politically correct" world.

I see some brothers are asking us 60's guys to tone down some of our machismo, bravado inspired stories. Perhaps they are right, and we should not post them on an open forum but instead discuss them amongst ourselves.

But, you know we grew up in a very strange, tamultous, violent, incredibly exciting world changing period. We were a product of our environment. We had to defend our turf and honor as Stags brothers against all rivals-and there were many. Had we not been the bad asses we were, Stags, as we knew and loved it, would not have survived.

We became men during those years! We did what we had to do to remain on top. By the way, we also loved as hard as we fought! We will save those stories for the reunion!

Yes we are all grown, mature men now with families and responsibilities.

But don't you ever have the desire to go out into the woods, consume mass quantities of adult beverages, put on your old stags shirt pound on your chest like an ape and howel at the top of your lungs at the moon!!

I do!

See you at the reunion.

Chuck-Lets go my man!!! What was it-- beer, wine and woman before midnight and defending the honor after 12..correct? I would not trade those days for the world!!
