Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/02/2003 09:12:16 By Don H. '57
Anyone know anything about the "Honorary" Stags? Guys that were inducted without pledging and without Hell Night? How did this work?
Second question, who pledged with me? Anyone remember?

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/03/2003 06:03:47 By Herb Stebbins (68)
Don, in the mid 60s (67-68) we did have a few guys that didn't go through a complete pledge period or a Hell Night. If my memory serves me right , it was accelerated to a weekend event or handled at a club meeting. They still got paddled brutally but did not go through the traditional pledging process. I can't recall giving anyone "Honorary" membership status while I was at Gables.
I'm sure Gaston could shed a little more light on this. Herb

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/03/2003 03:50:22 By Tim Yero
From what I remember (Be careful with that one!)...

There was such a thing as an "honorary member" being someone who was to be inducted at a later date, or for whatever reason, was not able to become a member even though they were picked.
There were a few during the early-mid-60's as club popularity was good and competition for "only the good" was keen.

I'd hate to stick my neck out by naming anyone as my memory is not that good about the situation but I do think an officer during this time (Maybe Bill Swain or Gonzalo Ruiz or Jose Herrara would know better ). They are on the contact list...

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/03/2003 06:50:11 By Gaston Ruiz 1968
Don, I don't recall any Honorary Members during my years, based on your question. However we did have members that did not pledge ,but were given a pretty good brutal beating to become a Stag.
Some got in with the following criteria: 1. Guys that were from other clubs. 2. Guys that were from other schools 3. guys that should have been Stags all along but the weaker members at the time felt they were either too bad,not cool enough or unknown to them......History changed after 1965 when the Brothers from 1963 -1965 who made a name for themselves for their toughness graduated and left the incoming classes, to fend for themselves and survive the great group that they were. We found out that everyone was coming after us to even out the score for the royal beatings they received from them and believe me we paid the price. After Steve trescott got beaten up at Burger king Across the street from Ponce De leon Jr High , we had to make a choice and beef up our ranks again . Herb and I spoke about it today and we both came up with the same word, WE HAD TO BUILD AN ARMY. As we recruited new members we looked for those that had everything in common with us , those that were tough, popular, willing to live and die for each other and protect the things we believed in..... The recruiting started and we built our Army...Everyone of these brothers from 1966 thru the later years until Stags last days were friends,Family and all were willing to do what ever it took to make sure we never were put in the position again after the incident with Steve Trescott. I don't know if this answers your question , but to clear the air .. We were and still are ,no matter how we got in Stags , members that will bleed purple and white .. ... even today as be paid the ultimate price to become a STAG.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/03/2003 07:04:14 By Terrence W. Grant
During my years with Stags (mid 50's) there was an Honorary Program. It was only given to a(1) senior during the last sememster. He didn't have to pledge but I cant remember about Hell night. I know that if ONE BLACKBALL dropped he wasn't voted in. In my years I think 3 guys got in that way but I dont remember who...Gary Durill in 1957 after I left according to Kavney.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 11/04/2003 07:08:40 By Herb Stebbins (68)
In 1968 all the Officers of the club were given copies of the "Constitution and Bylaws", I do remember that. I can remember referring to it on several occasions. I don't recall if this document originated from the original TDT Fraternity back in the 40's or was something born of necessity in the 50's or 60's.
Honorary Membership would have to of been addressed in this document. Maybe someone can find a copy in the backseat of their 55 Ford. Herb

the only thing i can find in the backseat of the 55 Ford is a Trojan Soldier

Pay-for-view would be fine with me. As long as I get a piece of the action. No pun intended. BTW all kidding aside, did you catch any fish? More to the point, did you clean any?

Herb, they went to the local fish market.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 12/12/2003 04:17:36 By John Dannelly 1957
Don, I think you already have everything I have to offer on honorary members but just in case...
During my years, 1954-1957, there was only one honorary member that I can recall. That was Gary Durrill in his senior year, 1957. I do not remember if Gary became a Stag during his first or second semester. Gary did not pledge for certain. I don't think he went through hell night but my memory on that is fuzzy. Gary was in another club at Gables and quit. I don't remember which club but maybe Gentry or Chinks. I don't remember any "rules" concerning honorary but maybe there were and I just don't remember.

John Dannelly

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/13/2004 04:51:45 By Onward and Upward
John, Gary Durrell was honored to be in Ching Tang, but unfortunately lost his way and fell along the wayside. You guys were kind enough to give him a home and a good group to be associated with. What happened to Gary? When he went off to Georgia, those Bulldog football players were pretty rough on him.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/13/2004 05:04:52 By Don H. '57
As I understand it, Gary became a motor cycle cop, and died from a motor cycle accident.

P.S. Who's this posting?

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/14/2004 03:59:42 By Onward and Upward
Don: Thanks for the information, though sorry to hear this bad news. A former classmate, and in my way of thinking, s good friend. As a non-Stag, best not ruffle any feathers at this time. Hope you are doing well.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/14/2004 08:47:17 By Don H. '57
I hope we're past all that, say hello.Who is this?

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/15/2004 06:07:30 By Onward and Upward
Don: Someone talked about kicking the butts of the Chinks[ actually he wrote Chings]. In reality, I don't ever remember a Chink brother having his butt kicked by a Stag. Do you? We graduated together, wasn't it at the Miami-Dade Auditorium, and didn't the local TV guy Ralph Renick give the commencment address? Things may have been rougher 3 or 4 year before, but not in the 1954-1957 years, at least not that I remember. Those high school years were the best years in my opinion. We went to a great school at a great time with a great bunch of kids. We truly were fortunate, but in reality, I kind of wasted alot of time while I should have spent more time with the books. Keep up the good work.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/16/2004 02:39:10 By John Dannelly
Tomato fights mostly. There were very few "real fights" during our high school years. I agree, those years were among the best years of an extraordinary era. It is sad that no future generation will have the benefit of years like those. It is a great disappointment to me that my sons, grandchildren and adopted sons (ages 8 and 12) will miss our high school experiences that we now treasure.
I agree with Don, any ill feelings were overcome more than 40 years ago. Come on, fess up! A 1957 Chink has no reason not to reveal his identity. As I have heard Kavney say, Chinks are our cousins (of course, Jim's brother is a Chink).

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 06/16/2004 05:40:42 By Onward and Upward
John: Glad you are in agreement with me, in fact, at Gables we usually were in agreement on most everything. Just want you guys, all of who were friends, to know after many years over many places, its great to talk about and think about those great years at Gables. Seems like all are in agreement. Hope you are doing well. O&U

Don and John: Ronnie Bovard, Class of 1954 TDT/Stag who passed away several years ago is not in your Deceased Brothers listing. Had dinner with Jack Pendry last week and told him about your web site. Just noticed this over-sight. Hope all is well. O/U '57

Sorry to hear about Ron...when in high school he lived in a two story house on Rivera drive i think he and dad were dentists..I'd never been in such a house...get guy and a loss.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 09/12/2004 06:20:42 By Jim Kavney
Onward & Upward, thanks for catching my error. I had Ronnie posted before on the Deceased Brother List. Each time there is an addition to the list I edit the list in Word them copy and paste it into the website. I think what happened is I copied up from the bottom and let go before I reached Ronnie who is at the top of the list. Then I copied it into the website without Ronnie. If you hadn't mention it, I may have never caught it myself. Thanks!! !!!
Please don't be anonymous on our website. You are welcome to join in on our message board anytime. Member of Chinks or any other club or anyone who when to CSHS are more then welcome. We would love to hear from you so, feel free to express your opinions and thoughts.

Dear Friends: The 1954 graduating class will be celebrating our 50th reunion this coming week end. We are blessed and hoping Ivan passes us by. We sure didn't want to cancel this event as so many have put in a full year getting it all together especially Ed and Pat Harrison. I personally extend an invitation to any of the Stag brothers to come and join us and visit for a while. I would love to see some of my old friends and also to make some new ones. My brother in law Joe Atwood is still planning on coming even though just getting over open heart surgery. I know he would love to see all of you. Be sure and come by our table as I don't think he will be doing much walking around. There will be six of us riding together next Friday. Joe and his wife Lee, Scrapper Smith and his wife and Phil Yonge and myself. The location has changed due to problems from Charley. New location : Shades of Green-1950 West Magnolia Palm Drive-Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-2789. I am volunteering Joe to buy you a drink if you will come. Saw Ralph Ortegas' name mentioned. He came to mine and Tommy Atwoods' wedding, can't believe he has a son playing college football. Glad the Canes did so well in their last game, I always pull for you unless you play U of F . I'm an avid Gator fan. My best to all of you. sylvia

Jim: Happy to pass the information along, even this most unhappy information. Yes, he lived in that big 2 story house on Riveria drive at that pie shaped intersection, as Terry mentioned. Knew Ronnie well, as a friend of his brother David, went to his wedding and drove up to Kentucky one summer with them. Yes, as Terry also mentioned, their dad was a dentist on Alhambra Circle in the Gables, where "Animal" Ember now has a dental practice. Hey, this is fun trading messages with you guy's. Told Jack Pendry, as you know, his late brother Tommy was a TDT/Stag. He thought is pretty entertaining. Not being one of the brothers, though we were all good friends and classmates, at least in my opinion, maybe it's best to remain incognito. Haven't seen you guys since graduation, but did run into Alan Finniston [sp?] at the CT Reunion afew years ago at the Biltmore. Well, you guy's behave yourselves and stay in touch. '57 O/U

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 09/17/2004 07:26:50 By Don H. '57
Hey O&U, tell Jack Pendray hello for me. He was one of my best friends at CGHS.

Jack Pendray...i was e mailing him and he lives on an expensive island near Sarasota...so I said "you must be loaded" loan me money....I haven't heard back!!!!!!!!!!!! typical CHINK can't take a joke...His brother was a great guy in TDT and I did business with him when I was at Merrill Lynch........

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 09/23/2004 02:04:02 By On and Upward
Don: Jack is back in FL. Yes, as Terry said, he lives on Long-boat Key, a barrier island off Sarasota. He is selling a condo he has on the island, so maybe he'll be throwing money around. You guys behave. O/U

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/08/2004 12:28:22 By Onward/Upward
Absolutely. The Class of 1957 had 15 of them. Guess the gauntlet has been has been dropped, but will not be picked up at this time, therefore the slur will be ignored. Jim, John and Don, it appears that remaining anonymous was a wise decision, as previously mentioned. It's obvious that "By" was trying to express a point, but either dyslexia or ignorance came through loud and clear. If some really want to locate Good Chinks from the 1950's, suggest they contact local medical societies, the Florida Bar Association, professional business organizations and senior military officer associations. Remind everyone, during the 1950's Ching Tang molded many outstanding individuals who became successful business and professional leaders. Hope you guy's are doing well. O/U

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/08/2004 12:34:47 By Herb Stebbins (68)
Onward and Upward, I gather that you graduated in the 50's. Would you happen to know if Ralph Gazatua (please excuse spelling) is still around. I believe Ralph graduated in 66 or 67. If my memory seves me right Ralph's dad was in the freight forwarding business.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/08/2004 12:42:50 By Herb Stebbins (68)
Onward and Upward, Ralph had some nice wheels for that day. He had a beautiful T-Bucket that used a beer keg for a fuel tank. He also had a black 65 Ford Hy-Po Fairlane. I believe that car was stolen right out of the High School parking lot.

Onward/Upward

Personally I think you ought to lighten up and realize that this site is (at least to me) a chance to revisit old friendships and gain new friends/brothers and I use humor to do it. I'm sorry that if you take my site Good Chink?? as offensive (but I don't think you do). If you do then I think your posture is defensive in nature that's why you have to refer to doctors, professional business owners not to mention my friends THE FLORIDA BAR ( I think lawyers are rated next to last with the public's trust and admiration)Last being used car dealers working in a lot with $500 maximun price. I think you would have done better by mentioning clergy( well on the other hand maybe not clergy). I dont condone the site written by "BY" nor do I think it's proper for anyone to hide behind a veil.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/10/2004 10:59:39 By Onward and Upward
Sorry, but as you mentioned, the clergy was omitted in the discussion. Since you brought it up, Ed Chalfant, a Class of '56 Good Chink is a Bishop in the Episcopal Chruch. Thank you for this opportunity to include the clergy in this discussion. The brother Ralph asked about graduated 10 years after my tenure as a Good Chink at Gables. Sorry I am unable to help you out. Is Mr Ruiz related to a Good Chink brother Paul Ruiz, known as "skunk" due to his natural white stripe of hair on his head? If so, Paul forgot to wash the young man's mouth out with soap, as obviously was required. The Good Chink Paul would not have tolerated such foul words. Sounds like some want to wallow in the mud. Have fun, and enjoy, but remember, all you will get is dirty and smelly. Your vulgarity won't enhance your position in civil society. How's the mud? O&U

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/10/2004 04:52:51 By Terrence W. Grant
I gave you the opening to bring up Ed's name to perhaps add a little creditability to your song and dance. The general population of the clergy doesn't add much creadence to your lofty list of professions that Chinks claim to have. I think I can guarantee you that there are no STAGS in the questionable clergy.

Paul Ruiz is no Gastonnnn Ruiz and the "Skunk" never would or will hold a candle to Gastonnn.
I didn't realize that "The Skunk" was affiliated with Ching Tang...if I'd known that his ass would have been tied up to a tree in the Hammack and the tomato's that I would use would be of the Green variety.

As far as I'm concerned your attack on Gastonnn is an attack on me and for this sir I would strongly suggest you refrain from further spewing of your BS. One thing about Gastonnn and I we dont hide behind an apron.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/10/2004 10:22:14 By John Dannelly 1957
There may be more than one individual using Onward and Upward. In an early posting Onward and Upward acknowledged he was CT 1957. The most recent postings seem to have a different style and attitude. I agree with Don H. I thought we got over most of that negative interaction over forty years ago. This interaction is supposed to be mostly humor which doesn't always come across when written.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/11/2004 06:26:35 By Terrence W. Grant
John...my last comment on this...why doesn't this guy/girl come forward like everyone else and use their name. Jack Pendray did and got alot of positive feedback. This site is called Stags Club and we welcome people to join in conversation but they should identify themselves and not hide behind curtain especially when they feel a need to attack our group or person. My banter of these sites is 100% humor and the people who know me realize it. But when I have to spend time with this idiot thats not fun or banter. If someone who knows this guy (Don or Jim) you might suggest to him to eventually show up on another site under his real name and things will be fine or come out "of the closet" directly on this site.

Re: Roaring 50'sPosted at 10/12/2004 06:20:30 By Terrence W. Grant
Also as a senior member of TDT/STAGS and an officer 1955 & 56 I will admit that the MOMMIES & DADDIES of Chinks had more money than those of the family's of Stags. As a Stag we were either working or participating in some kind of event. Chinks were too busy at Burdines with mom picking out a new outfit (pink rolled collar shirt) for school.

Another measurement of school participation was an Honor Society which included sports and brains. The National Athletic Scholarship Society had 7 Stags as members...officers of the organization were Heaton, Swartz and Grant (admittedly I dont know how I was voted in, but got the vote and thats what counts)

David, I love your spirit!!
I think that alot of us view this site as a sacred place where we can speak our minds with friends and totally put our guard down. Some of us don't take kindly to disruptive conduct.
I know if I went to another Club's board I would be very careful about what I said. If I wasn't wanted there, I surely wouldn't return.

After reviewing all the treads it seemed appropriate to post this message here. This morning on the Golf thread a Brother named Joe Byrd posted a message and ask "anybody from the Ponce High days (49ers)" I sent an email to Joe asking him if he graduated from Ponce and that I didn't know that Stags started at Ponce. I guess I should study my Stag's history a little better.
With Joe's approval I would like you to hear his reply.
"Herb, it is nice hearing from you.
Yes, I graduated from Ponce Senior High in 1949 and am also a Charter Member of TDT. There were 10 of us. We went to the WPB Chapter for our Charter in 1947 I think it was. We soon became the power on Campus, leaving "Ching Tang" in the dirt.
Fraternities were outlawed I believe in 1950, I don't recall being restricted about membership while I was there.
I was told it was to become the "Shield Club" but somehow it evolved to the "Stags" at Coral Gables High. It makes me proud to be part of the beginning of such a Club. It's so nice to know many of you Guys still maintain contact.
The information you see on the Site on the Convention and Monthly Magazine was sent by me.
Most of the Charter Members have died, including my twin Brother. Don Works was the person who really started TDT and he's since died also. Ray Kaylor, was our first President (Don didn't want the hassle of it) and he is still alive.
We had a saying to each other when we parted: "in the bonds", our password was Jean (a National Presidents girl friend who was killed) and our honk was: 2 shorts.....pause.....3 shorts.
I hope things are going well in your life and thanks for your concern..."
"In the Bonds"...Joe
If your anything like me, then this gave you a warm feeling inside. Thanks Joe.
In the Bonds...Herb

Joe Byrd was the FIRST Chaplin of TDT. He was kind enough to send me the Opening and Closing Prayers to each meeting. Here they are.
Opening Prayer: "Almighty God, thou has promised when two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou will be in their midst and bless them.
In thy name we have assembled and in thy name we wish to carry on our doings.
Grant the sublime principals of this fraternity may sublimate every discordant passion within us and so harmonize our hearts that we will reflect honor and beauty forever.
Amen"
Closing Prayer:
"Almighty God, give us the strength, the courage and the constant desire to fulfill our duties toward this Fraternity.
Fill those in authority with the power and wisdom that they may lead us in the path of right doing. Amen"
Wow........beautiful words!
If you thought the "Sweetheart Song" was of the 60's generation, then think again. The "Sweetheart Song" 1949
"The flowers that I see never grew before, the birds never sang what they sing. The love that I never knew before is now my everything.
The light in her eyes is a paradise, revealing a heaven for two, her lips hold the bliss of a fragrant kiss like violets wet with dew.
One theme my whole heart is singing, one dream of a love devine and over her heart lies the seal of our love, the emblem of Tau Delta Tau."
Thank you again Joe.

Guys, just met an a gentleman (Joe Settani) at the Harley dealer in Daytona Beach. We started talking and found out we are both retired cops, went to Gables and he said he was a member of STAGS, class of 1950. His good friends were George Malvestuto and Richard Gardner. New everthing about STAGS. He told me about their pledge days and hell night across from Ponce De Leon Jr. where UM is now.

I showed him the website and he found friends he is going to get in touch with. He knew Mr. Atwood as well. He was sorry to hear about him, as well as other brothers who are no longer with us.

Mr. Settani, is going home to get the old photos of his days in STAGS and get in touch with Jim.

I also, contacted Jim and introduced them.

He is going to try and make it to the August night out with me.

Take care

David
