NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/22/2004 06:38:03 By Terrence W. Grant
PER GASTONNNN IDEA OF NEW SIGHT There have been several ideas bounced around:Costa Rica, Flamingo, Managua even Jupiter Inlet. Personally I would like a package like Belize where we had our meals together pool time and after hour options. These were fun times for me as I dont think I stopped laughing for 5 days. I went into a Costa Rica sight and there are hundreds of packages...I'm game for something in Nov and Dec and as usual you can count me in as long as no snake hunting included in the price.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/22/2004 07:58:29 By john Scopetta 68
Terry, a trip in Nov, Dec, sounds like a winner and it would make that time of the year very nice when many of our brothers are freezing in the cold weather. If we book early it will be relatively cheap and the larger the group the better the package. The Costa Rica Idea is good I will ask Steve when he returns how he grades it and there is also the Key's and Bahamas that are close enough to take our own boats and due some great fishing. Can you see us in Key West for five days what a party????

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/22/2004 11:48:45 By Terrence W. Grant
John:

Remember I don't have a boat (poor guy)...and your wanting to be in Key West for 5 days scares me!!!!!!!!!...I agree lets get something going anywhere that the fish bite... but i do think that dinner around the table like in Belize is a must...if there are too many distractions the outing lose's what it's meant to be for. I cant make BNO this month but i have a feeling the casino will be a distraction ....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/22/2004 11:36:26 By John Dannelly 1957
I like the idea of a relatively close by trip before another out of the country trip. Winter fishing out of Key West is typically very good. Let's talk about this at the Miami Stags Night Out on August 7. John S., be thinking of possible boats that could make a Bimini or Key West outing.

Don, what is your area's bay-flats boat fishing like in the winter?

John

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/23/2004 05:51:28 By Terrence W. Grant
yea John D...I want the opportunity to fish with you...you are unquestionably the most fishing savy guy we have and then there's Ivan who has more recipes than Julia Styles (or whatever her name is).....I want to be able to absorb just a fraction of your vast knowledge of fishing under the IGFA rules. We can fish anywhere even Lake Suzy

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/23/2004 08:36:25 By john Scopetta 68
The prospect of fishing in the Key's is fantastic, The group accommodations are very reasonable during the summer but get very expensive in the winter. Key west is the must fun place and it swings both ways Terry so you don't have to worry about me. The back country fishing is better in the upper keys but is available anywhere down there. Offshore and wrecks fishing as well as marquesas and the Fort are a longer run but very scenic areas. Terrance you are the only Stag with a pending world record so I don't see any need to kiss up to anyone not even John D. and the humble poor boy routine will not get you any sympathy. The cat is out of the bag, the sixties team in looking out for you!!!!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/23/2004 09:47:59 By John Dannelly 1957
OK Terry, what is it that you want from me. You know as well as I do there are at least a dozen Stags that know fishing as well as I do and probably another half-dozen that are more knowledgeable.

John D

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 11:08:24 By john Scopetta 68
Were is our planing Guru when you need him??? Jim come out and save the day the best times so far have been the reunion and the Belize trip it was so much fun it hurt. I agree with Terrence the place has to have the best of both worlds, good fishing and a time to relax and get to know the brothers.
The central Keys has some great fishing and is not as expensive. Lets pick a date and find a package. Flamingo would be another good place and there is always Costa Rica for next summer. I spoke to a Doctor from Honduras last night at Crook & Crook and he had fished Belize and Honduras rivers and he said they get huge Snook and Tarpon in the winter. The Indian River area might be another good place for a four day three night trip. Given a choice I say the lower keys.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 11:18:48 By Don H. '57
John S.,
What would we fish for in the lower keys? Offshore or? Flamingo might be good, especially in the fall when not so hot, fewer bugs, and before the winds pick up.
Are we considering guided trips or a free for all with our own boats? We don't want to lose any brothers. Comments?

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 11:27:16 By Don H. '57
Forgot to add, if we consider North Indian River, e.g. around Titusville, maybe I could contact someone up there to set us up. There's a hotel where Gary T. and I stay that's about $49 a night. A guide will be about $350 per boat ( two each) for a full day.Possibilites are BIG redfish, snook, trout, and maybe tarpon. As for night life, don't know.Gary and I are headed that way in September. The big reds school thru the fall.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 01:12:01 By john Scopetta 68
I have never had the pleasure of fishing in the lower keys I am mostly a Bahamas person but I have always heard great stories about Key west and the marquesas. Flamingo and chokolosky you definitely need a guide. The Indian River area is strange to me. A key west outing would be fun because Key west is a blast but I am game for anything. Steve just got back from Costa Rica?????

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 01:37:40 By Terrence W. Grant
Re: Flamingo Don H is better than a guide as he knows the place like the back of his hand (and he see's that enough)..when we went there several months ago 3 boats broke down John D & Jim K (at home) and Don's on sight.... i cant see paying a guide $350 a day $175 apiece to catch snook...we should find a place where you have your choice of inside or outside I think the middle keys offers that but what do i know.

Yes the best places are in central america but during nov and dec...we went at cheap time. Get Steve to tell us about the FISHING in Costa

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 02:01:19 By Terrence W. Grant
John...your still shopping at CROOK & CROOK just think about the name man....ask Don H. about the rod and reel I caught the grouper on...it was the worst...squeaked from rust, bad drag, and rod had two eye's that were hanging by threads...it's all in the wrists my man and that keen sense of timing.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/25/2004 09:16:16 By Don H. '57
Flamingo info. in case some of you aren't familiar:
They have rooms in the lodge and duplex cabins. All have double beds and a/c. The lodge rooms have TV, the cabins not.The cabins have a full kitchen. There is a resturant and a pizza bar, plus a bar in the resturant. The lodge has a swimming pool and barbecue grills on the patio.
There's also a bait and tackle shop at the dock area. The facility is about 35 miles from civilization, no casinos. The park entrance fee is $10 per vehicle plus $5 for the boat fee. Old farts like me get in free with $2.50 boat fee.
Depending on the season the rooms run about $65-90 a night.

Don...I'm ready...make sure your boat is...and please learn how to cook rice....whats the best month no bugs

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 08:29:01 By Don H. '57
My boat is running great ( after another $500 to rebuild the carbs). Almost dumped Gary over the back on our last trip to Titusville. You might need a hair net.
Probably Sept. or Oct.when the 'squtoes slack off a little. For the uninitiated they would be probably be intolerable this time of the year. If we plan a trip down there in the fall need to make early reservations. Really gets crowded when the weather starts to cool off a little.I'm game.Who else, and who has fished FLamingo before?

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 12:27:25 By Jim Kavney
Don, lets do October a little cooler and fewer bugs. I just checked and both trout and snook are in season not like last time. Count me in!

Jim

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 03:07:58 By John Scopetta #58 in 68
I have problem with the with October 3, 4, 5, any other days count me in. I have a boat I can borrow from my brother 21 feet is that to big??? I can carry three people but I draw some water.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 03:49:23 By Don H. '57
John,
I think your boat will work, especially up around Shark River. It's about 15 miles from the dock to the Gulf via Whitewater Bay.Would be great if you have a radio so we can keep in touch during the trip. You can fish points up there and/or troll the rivers-Jew Fish, snook, tarpon, sharks. We can plan a safe trip for you. You don't want to get stuck up there. If you're seroius about the trip I would suggest buying a Hot Spot chart for Whitewater Bay. Don't recommend taking a boat that size out front unless fishing the Cape Beaches-too many shoals and flats, can get really shallow.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 05:06:07 By John Scopetta #58 in 68
Don't worry about the radio I wont be far behind you guys if you think I am going to get lost in that God forsaking place you are out off your mind. The boat can get in to pretty shallow water and it has the propeller trim tabs. The accommodations need to be made as soon as possible I am ready to send the deposit.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 05:44:21 By Don H. '57
Well let's start getting names and I'll make arrangements. Jim Kavney has already put his name in the pot for October OK--
who is ready to commit to a multiple day trip to Flamingo in mid October. So far we have Humphries, Scopetta, Kavney (Terry, where are you?)

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/26/2004 10:14:39 By Jim Kavney
John, once you've fished there a time or two you'll never call it a "God forsaken place" again. It has a majestic beauty all it's own, no place in the world like it peaceful, serene and endless. Of course that’s when the wind not blowing, it’s not raining with lightning dancing all around you and especially when you’re not lost.
Around twenty-five years ago Helen and I rented a houseboat out of Flamingo for a three-night trip. We left Friday afternoon and were due back Monday by 2 PM. We had our son Jimmy and two of his buddies all approximately thirteen years old. We made it to the North end of Whitewater Bay and fished around there catching a few trout for supper. We stayed well off shore because this was August and the bugs can block out the moon at night in that part of the world. Next morning our plan was to motor up the Little Shark River to the Gulf on the Western side of Cape Sable. We were trolling for grouper and Helen was at the wheel, I was in the stern trying to keep the kids lines from tangling. The engine-warning signal went off, I shut down the engines. Tried checking things to find the problem. A mechanic, I'm NOT. After a while I checked the water depth, very shallow. We had taken a wrong turn and the boat had no radio, three kids, S---, S---, S--t! Our only hope was someone else would make the same mistake. They didn't. When the sun got lower in the sky the inevitable happened. First the mosquitoes came; then a half hour later the no-see-ums. By now we were inside with everything closed up as tight as we could make it. Still they came; we wet newspaper so we could force it around the windows and doors. They were in our ears, nose, mouth and anywhere else they wanted to go. We were under the sheets we covered ourselves with what little newspaper we had left. The kids were wonderful; I guess they knew no whining would help. Cussing didn't help either I used every word I ever heard in the first hours. Morning came at last. The sheets were covered with mosquitoes and no-see-ums that died from the spray we had covered ourselves with. Picture this, lay a sheet out and have a waiter with a full pepper grinder, grind pepper over the sheet until he ran out or his arm fell off. Well, you get the picture. Ditto the second night. Of course I tried to get the boat moving a hundred times but the warning signal went on every time I tried. On Monday morning a little before noon I heard a plane near by, I shot off the flare I had ready since Saturday. An old DC-3 came over about 200 feet up, the cargo door was opened with a guy in fatigues standing in the door. Well, at least he didn't drop his drugs on us; we just waved to each other. I held little hope he would be kind enough to radio our position when he was finished with his drug run. That didn’t happen.
We were due in by 2:00 PM; I was hoping they would start looking for us by 3:00 or 4:00, if not it was going to be another hell night and this one didn’t get over in a few hours. About 5:00 PM; I heard a plane, soon it was flying over us waving its wings. Within a half hour a Ranger boat pulled up and tied off to the houseboat. The Ranger told us the boat owner was on his way out with parts. Once he knew where we were he figured shallow water and we must have burned up the impeller, he guessed right. We were back at the dock by dark and heading home soon after.
Even that experience doesn’t dim my views of the beauty of Everglades National Park. But, I always bring extra bug spray just in case.

Lets go <* ))))><

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 07:15:05 By john Scopetta 68
Jim, I have heard so many stories about people getting lost in the park but hey it sounds like you were lost before you had to return the house boat. The noseems are the worst the only good thing is that they go away after a couple of hours. Those mosquitos stay all night unless the wind picks up. Why dint you use the radio??? or a cell phone??? Just kidding.
I have some questions??? Do we need a guide or can we use GPS, what do we fish for that time of year? Is all the fishing in mangroves or do you get anything in Florida bay.
And for those of you that know Terrence he treated my whole family and I to dinner tonight on his buck, when we should have been toasting his great accomplishment, no, not the Golliath record, but another much bigger one which I will let him tell you about. Thank You Terry, you are the best!!!!!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 08:51:49 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, I too thank Brother Terry and Russi for inviting my wife Linda and I for dinner last night while he was in miami......Terry, congrats on your achievement keep it up ...we are PROUD of you.....by the way you 50's guys ,John and I inducted Terry in the late 60's Hall of Fame ,,,he is now a 60's guy when we go fishing again...I guess the pay-off in Belize worked $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.......

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 09:19:10 By Don H. '57
John,
You can use my GPS, but it won't do you much good. However, the Hot Spot charts have GPS coordinates.
We need to get John D. in on this trip. He's got a flats skiff. Jim, would you plan on taking your boat?

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 10:53:26 By Jim Kavney
If, I can get the water out of the gas tank my boat will be there.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 01:49:21 By Don H. '57
John, when I say shallow I mean a 2 ft. swing, about 6" at low tide. We need to start discussing dates ,and inside or outside/or both so I can plan with the tides if at all possible.Need to know--
-how many are going
-two to a room OK? if we get lodge rooms there is a couch in addition to the two double beds. This can cut down on expenses. Is three to a room OK (with couch)
-assume The Commodore will need a room by himself (due to his excessive flatulence)
-what are the best dates for everyone
-how many days fishing
-who will be taking boats
-who will need tackle
-will Terry charge for his lessons
-Do we want to cook on the grill or in the rooms any night( the resturant won't kill us, but....,ask Jim)
Anything else??

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 05:55:40 By Jim Kavney
Don, I vote for the cabins they were great last time and who needs a TV. If the Dolphins or the Canes are playing at night we can go to the bar. Speaking of bars, Dannelly is barred from planning the menu and selecting the food.

Jim

Red alert the sixties team is looking at the possibility of having to do without one of its stars, I believe Gaston mentioned he was going to North Carolina in October. We are now taking bids to replace him on the inaugural team. We have three on our boat Steve my brother George and I and we will need two rooms. We should reserve a couple of charters to cover other potential team members that may not have their own boats. What are the rates???
The dates are important to establish as soon as possible

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 07:01:25 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, I will be leaving the last week of October thru the first week of September.....count me in if its before that.......

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 07:07:42 By Don H. '57
Gaston,
We can work around your dates. I'll do some checking tomorrow and propose some dates. Just returned from North Carolina. Sure you'll enjoy the cooler and drier weather. It was great.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 07:10:45 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Guys ,if the cabins have a full kitchen ...I 'll take one for me ...I love to cook......the hell with the TV.....once I retire I plan to open a Dinner ...lunch and breakfast only ...then a part time job at wal-mart to welcome the customers and get the opportunity to wear that pretty red vest....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/27/2004 11:40:06 By john Scopetta 68
Gus I will work for you at the dinner as long as we have the afternoons off to fish and flirt with all the women like terry does. My dream job is to work at Walmart in the sporting goods or any other sporting store as you can probably tell by now. I love the smell of bait in the morning. I cant make it the beginning of the month.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 10:57:47 By Don H. '57
John,
Sounds like a plan to me. If you like the smell of bait, you should visit the Jupiter jetty when the sun is up.I can wash dishes for Gaston, and sweep floors.I don't eat much! When do we start?
Will post some proposed dates for Flamingo later today. And yes,I guess you would call it a full kitchen with stove, oven and all utensils. If we do that will need to plan a menu.Where's John D.?

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 11:12:43 By Jim Kavney
Dannelly, is in Folly Beach, SC. on vacation. I believe he's due back on the second. We've got to keep him away from the kitchen, remember the disaster with the food he picked last trip to Flamingo.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 04:23:27 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
guys, i'll take full charge of the kitchen and the cooking.......What kinds of fish will we be going after??????? its easier knowing what i have to work with......

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 04:52:08 By Don H. '57
Catfish, muddobbers, and nurse sharks.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 06:23:38 By Don H. '57
Proposed dates for Flamingo:
Arrive 10/11 PM Leave 10/14 AM fish three days. ---Rate per room is $99 per room including tax.I get a small discount, as I recall 10%.
-Resturant and cafe are closed until Nov. 1. Kitchens in rooms and barbecues by pool.(think they are natural gas) Snack bar at dock has "stuff", but no doubt expensive.
As of today there were none cabins availble.Must cancell reserverations 48 hours prior for full refund. One nights rate required for deposit on each room
Suggestions.

I'm back and a little confused...Gastonnn says he will be gone last part of OCTOBER and first week of SEPTEMBER...another CG honors student.
I can't fish unless Gastonnnn is with us...

I can go Oct anytime after the 15th for 3 days of fishing...guys 4 days like Belize is a little too much...
These are my observation from last Flamingo trip..
1) Jim and Don know the area
2) It's in the middle of NOWHERE no girls to flirt with or even see.
3) Cabins are good I had my own room and Jim and Don shared one bedroom 2 baths and nice living room and kitchen.
4) REPEAT DON'T LET JOHN D select the grocery's (rice and beans) no wonder GAS
5) I bought Publix subs on way over to have for fishing days...they got soggy
6) Don let Don or I cook...I caught the only eating fish and Jim cooked (Snook)
7) Dont go snake hunting with those guys

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 06:38:45 By Don H. '57
P.S. Forgot to add, didn't plan to use giudes. They are very expensive, about $350-400 a day with tip.
Terry, you can cancel my call. It was about the trip. Also, what was wrong with the Cuban rice I cooked up? And, the boat captain always try to make the guests look good.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 06:43:46 By Don H. '57
And T, that wasn't snook, it was redfish.God, will I ever get you straightened out??? Only snakes at Flamongo is on the road, and you don't have to stop.Once caught about a 7 foot boa on the road. If 'gators and crocs intimiate, better stay home.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 06:46:02 By Jim Kavney
Terry, I also notice Gaston was going to be in NC for a little over 11 months, I figured he was just testing us.
Don, your dates start on 10/11 that a holiday (Columbus Day). We might due better having more Brothers on board if we go over the weekend. Three days works better for me then 4. If, it not a holiday the cabins might be available.
Gaston, cooking I'm all for it, black bean rice and plantains I hope, I'll do the dishes.
Terry, the only fish cooked last trip was a red fish, we don't get any snook big enough to keep. The red was good, thanks again for let me eat it.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 06:55:16 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, thank you for reminding me that I'am Dyslectic.....Its the last week of October -1st week of November that I will be gone... Don, I have no problem cooking I have been married over 25 yrs and my wife only cooks a couple times a month....I took gourmet cooking yrs ago(A Connoisseur of fine foods.... and can put any kind of meal together.....my menu will follow just to see the response.....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 07:51:00 By Don H. '57
Gaston,
You're a lucky, your wife cooking that often. Second what Jim said, black beans and rice, yummy!
We're going to have to move the trip tp the next week so Terry can go. It wouldn't be same without the Commodore on board. So, give me some dates for the next week. I didn't pick a weekend due to the crowds, but that will work.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/28/2004 08:27:41 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don ,I agree with Jim a 3 day outing may be better and we might get more guys involved ...

I have a trial in boca oct 12 13 14 but i have to be there the 11 i can fish 7,8 9, 10 but must leave night of the 10...Gaston wont be back that week will he...Gastonnnn a con a sewer of fine foods...he had a pulled pork sandwich at Shorty's but John even ordered ribs for his dogs ..but in all seriousness guys thanks for showing up for a little birthday grub before I picked up my 21 st birthday chip ( years since my last drink of booze) at my home group Coral Gables. I had breakfast with Don H in JUpiter on the 13th where I got sober.

First and last time you'll hear this ... when I went to the AA meeting in the Gables (next to Deel Ford) there were at least 30 women there under 30 that were knock down gorgeous who had been sober from 1 year to 3 years. If any of you guys have family (children) that seem to need help with a drinking or drug problem this is where they will feel comfortable (which I believe is needed to recover). Take them to Birthday night which is the last Monday of each month. This is where they can bond and then possibly hook up with a cool sober young lady. And of course if you old dudes want to go...go for it

The following dates have been selected for our Flamingo trip:
-Arrive Thurs. 10/23 PM
-Fish Friday 10/22
-Fish Sat. 10/23
-Fish and/or leave Sunday 10/24
This will provide the opportunity for Brothers who actually have to work to join us on Sat., and maybe Sunday morning if decide to stay and fish a while before heading home.
Need confirmation that this works for all. Please let me know ASAP. Also, need know who will be taking boats.Could get a little crowded if we don't have enough water craft. Ideally two to a boat.

I just talked to John Gibson and he's going fishing with us in Flamingo. He has a flats boat and will take it across to Flamingo from Key Largo, we'll try to hook up and travel over together.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/29/2004 08:39:38 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don and guys , the date of October 22nd is not good for me as I leave that day for N.C.....So I will have to pass up on this one ....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/30/2004 09:56:29 By Don H. '57
Gaston, sorry you can't make it. Looks like we may have to put up with Dannelly's cooking. Hopefully we can do it again sometime in the not too distant future.
Haven't heard from you other guys about the dates. Need to know something soon!!!!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/31/2004 08:12:10 By john Scopetta 68
I have returned from lobstering and it was a really good time. The Hawks Cay resort really nice but expensive, probably because of the demand they have, everything was full for Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. There were boats as far as you could see it was a bad couple of days for the Bugs as they call them. Highly recommend it if you enjoy eating and diving for lobsters.
I would like to suggest that we move the Flamingo dates forward or back to see if we can accomodate Gaston and Terry without them, there is no one to pick on. Gus what date are you back???

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/31/2004 07:35:56 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, I leave on the 22nd of Oct ... be back on Nov. 2nd.....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 07/31/2004 08:04:53 By Terrence W. Grant
True I really dont have my heart into it without the Gastonnnnnnnn. Guys i'm only busy Oct 11-14 how difficult is that to work around.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/01/2004 01:04:11 By john Scopetta 68
The second week in November would be a good time to head down there it will be cooler and the bugs wont be as bad. Gaston and Terry could make the trip and after being cooped up in a cabin in North Carolina, Gus will need some time off with his brothers that would only require one day off from work Friday.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/01/2004 01:43:22 By Jim Kavney
Guys, it would not be difficult to work around if, everyone would note the date they have commitments and can't make the fishing trip. Before Don posted the dates he called me and we when over the possibility. Taking into account the three reply on the thread.

Terry: "I can go Oct anytime after the 15th for 3 days of fishing." Later: "week of 18th is good for me... anytime. Later again: "Guys i'm only busy Oct 11-14." (I know Terry has a lot to say)

John S: "I have problem with the with October 3, 4, 5, any other days count me in."

Gaston: "I will be leaving the last week of October thru the first week of September.....count me in if its before that......." This was a bit of a mind twister but we figured the last week in Oct. 25th (Monday) to 31st. (Sunday).

Gaston going on the 22nd instead of the 25th. is where we screwed up. We forgot there is 10 days in the last week of Ootober. We'll try to redo the dates so everyone is included, the last guys we want to leave behind is the cook. BUT please anyone going NOW is the time to put your dates that you CAN'T GO on this thread.

Jim

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/04/2004 08:18:26 By john Scopetta 68
What happened to our fishing trip I was actually getting excited about fishing in the mangroves again for mud dueling fish. I can tell you that if we go to a place with no nightlife and sit in a cabin with the guys it will not be as much fun as were there is at least a little social life. I have never been to Flamingo so I will reserve comment but the attraction of Belize was the prospect of fishing in a place were there was a probability of getting some big ass fish. I feel that we should find locations that are not familiar to us, reasonable in cost and with enough night life to insure that no one goes out past ten.
I vote for a rematch in the Action Belize arena in December or January. This time we will be better prepared and the cost was very reasonable all things considered. The only place I have seen that has flats fishing, river fishing and offshore in the same boat that is hard beat.
Also the hotel was nice and the food was very good. Eating your own catch. Man it was delicious!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/04/2004 09:11:09 By Terrence W. Grant
John: I agree...with the exception that you have more money than GOD ...but thanks for thinking of us poor guys...yes Flamingo is isolated more so than you can imagine..when I was there I was listening to U of Miami game on the RADIO..no TV..I will go anywhere but agree there should be a little something else entertaining like George's friend the doctor...still dont know if those things work or maybe i'm getting younger. also a choice between deep and shallow water is good...my favorite fishing buddy Don H. doesnt like deep and my hero Gastonnnn doesnt like shallow....hell I'll go back to Belize even though they have screwed up and not gotten my line and leader to me...claimed it was couriered back and they "whatever"....also Costa Rica would be new to me as far as fishing...what info did Steve bring back besides THE DEL RAY HOTEL

Regarding a Stags fishing outing in Flamingo...

I do not want to miss a Flamingo outing with Stags. Count me in.

I have found the cabins in Flamingo to be perfect for a fishing outing. With full kitchens, cooking is not a problem. And I don't think we need outside entertainment to have a great time. The fellowship becomes the entertainment. The fishing club stays in the cabins for our Flamingo outings and uses one or two cabins for a hospitality room. Always a good time. Good friends, good food, good drink. What more do we need?

I do not have anything on my schedule for October that I can't change and only Thanksgiving week in November.

Other possibilites if we can't get the Flamingo trip scheduled - The fishing club is having small boat outings in October and November. A Stags group can participate as my guests. A Friday am 10/22 through Sunday 10/24 outing in Chokoloskee. And Friday am 11/12 through 11/14 outing on Cape Sable (use ramps at Flamingo, camp on Cape Sable).

SFSF PRESENTATION ON FISHING IN FLAMINGO

On Wednesday August 11 South Florida Sport Fishermen will have a steak dinner followed by a presentation on fishing in Flamingo. Mike Hines, a guide that specializes in fishing the Flamingo area, will be the guest speaker.

Dinner is at 7:30 at the clubhouse. Dinner cost is $10. If any brothers want to attend, contact me.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TPosted at 08/06/2004 08:38:57 By john scopetta

john, i would like to attend the fishing club presentation on fishing in flamingo on wenesday night. I agee with your post on the flamingo outing and i am ready to go.
Belize left us with a feeling that we missed something the fishing was not at the level that we expected but it had all the potential to be there. The water is very clear and there is no other boats fishing the area it has offshore flats and snook within a twenty minute boat ride and the cost was not bad, besides it only takes 90 minutes to fly there

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/06/2004 01:52:50 By John Dannelly 1957
John S., congradulations on your son's admission to University of Kentucky Medical School. I can picture you in the "proud Papa" role at the "white coat" cermony.

You are on the list for the steak dinner-fishing Flamingo presentation at the fishing club this Wednesday.

Anyone else that is attending please let me know or you may not have a steak. The steaks are always exceptional, the speakers are usually very knowledgable.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/06/2004 04:07:09 By Kay
Terry,

I would give some consideration to your invitation to fish only if I also knew who would bait my hook. And then, of course are the problems that would arise out of my bringing in the biggest and best catch of the trip!
Wouldn't want to put y'all to shame.
Now don't read anything untoward into that.

Kay

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/06/2004 07:38:26 By John Dannelly 1957
Kay, you have always been a first-class lady. Any Stag on the boat you are in would be willing to bait your hook, net or gaff your fish, unhook your fish, open your Miller, etc.

Everyone,
I'm computer is on the fritz, DSL is out and the dial-up modem is so slow can't do anything. As soon as my DSL is corrected I'll get back on setting up the Flamongo trip.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/18/2004 09:47:02 By john Scopetta 68
This is a good time to get back in to finalizing a trip to flamingo if that is going to become a reality. The cabins sound great I don't have a problem with that but if we get a place in the Naples area would that be to far away from the fishing??? I was always under the impression you could fish the channels twenty minutes south on Naples.
The trip I would love to see is something like Costa Rica or Belize in the winter because our previous visit left me with a bad taste that we really missed the big ones they most be there somewhere we just dint have the right conditions.
If we could get a preliminary interest on a 3 day 4 night trip in January it would be great. WE can probably get some of the snowbirds to make the trip down. I think we can all agree that after three days of fishing the old body needs a rest. All except Terry of coarse.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/19/2004 12:01:39 By Jim Kavney
John, if you got a place near Naples it would take you a week or two to get to Flamingo. Because you would be lost for a least that long.

Jim

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/19/2004 05:32:13 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John , a 3 or 4 night to Costa Rica its fine with me in January ...you are right we could probably get some of the snow birds involved .....we take the Belize 7 and add anther 7 and imagine the possibilities of the Explosive time.....I 'm sure Injay ,My brother Gonzalo ,your brother George , Herb ,Abney, Gibson and a few other could be talked into it. we get someone from each years group to make the contacts and push for a group( CHAMPIONSHIP )50-59) , (60-65) , (66-69), (70-73) ....this could be the BIG ONE.....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/19/2004 08:32:50 By Stephen Bischoff '69
Entering the Flamingo trip debate on the last go
around, my schedule would allow me to go down on
Friday November 12 and fish Saturday November 13, maybe Sunday then back
to Vero Sunday afternoon. My boat fishes three
confortably or if George takes his boat its his call. Even though I haven't fished the area George, John, and I will take on all challenges. I
will made an exception to the three and include our guide/cook Senor Gaston. We should fish in the same areas. If John can retrieve his Russian
Dancers from Belize we could have Entertainment.
By the way November is the hot month in Belize.
Key West is a great fishing destination because
we can party and eat like Kings. Great fishing if
they are biting. Lets make a decison !!!!
Gaston,
I think Ana and I are going to see the leaves
change somewhere in October
Stephen

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/19/2004 08:49:39 By Stephen Bischoff '69
Disreguard the dates I gave in November !!!!!!
November 5 & 6 are the correct dates for me. I'm
taking my son Nicholas to Las Vegas for his 21st
Birthday. Going to Gamble, brothels, and Mustang
Ranch.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/20/2004 11:15:40 By john Scopetta 68
I take it that at this time flamingo is a no go for October??? I would like to try and get an outing going to the keys or to Bimini in November if we can get a couple of boats that take at least four per boat we can do the trip.
Jim don't worry about us getting lost in Flamingo we will find our way via electronics or we will hire the best guide money can buy to show us the way. We the sixties team are ready for any challenge.
If we get something solid for Belize in Jan. sing me up!!!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/20/2004 05:45:26 By Don H. '57
Oh John! No doubt you 60's studs are up to the challenge of boating from Naples to Flamingo, but I doubt you will find a guide to make the trip. Good luck and God speed. Let us know when you leave.
As for the October outing, I was planning to reschedule for early November, but if the consensus is a keys trip or Binimi in November go ahead and put it together.
Let's get some posts on the site to see what brothers want to do.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/20/2004 06:31:16 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John and Don , lets find a happy medium .....(THE KEYS)We could find a place to unite the different groups.....Lodging in a place that would provide a fishing experience to all.....Those that prefer (Mud fishing) and those that prefer (Blue water)... the "STUDS" will do their thing and those with " WEAK STOMACHS" can do theirs ...WE will share the "BIG CATCHES" with those that prefer "BAIT FISH" and have a great time doing so....But all kidding aside lets just do something......

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/20/2004 06:48:36 By Don H. '57
Si, we can work it out. Youse guys should see the "mud fish" I'm catching in my back yard ( or close to it).

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 10:57:44 By john Scopetta 68
Don, send pictures the proof is in the pudding. You guys are misreading my post I would love to go to Flamingo in fact I had made arrangements with John Donnelley to attend a seminar on fishing Flamingo and unfortunately he had to cancel. What I am saying is since there had been no further word I assume the trip was off for the time because of the tough times some of the brothers are going through. If we can get a Flamingo trip going by all means let's go!!!
Just for the record our flats boat goes seventy-five MPH so if we get someone on board that knows were they are going we can get places FAST!!!!. Or kill ourselves trying.
Maybe we should go with Steve to Vegas sounds like a good time???

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 01:55:04 By Don H. '57
JS-75 mph in a flat boat is really something else. Are you sure it isn't a bass boat? Mine only goes a little over 50, then it starts chime walking. That with a 135.
Now for the Flamingo trip details.
Arrive PM on 11/3, check-in, dinner, etc. The resturant will be open.
Fish 11/4
Fish 11/5
11/6 AM check out. Fish AM and/or leave for home.
Need to know how many are going, cabins, etc.I'll forgot to check the prices, will post later. If we have a cook, arrangements can be made later.
Hope to see you guys there.
Don

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 05:06:16 By Don H. '57
Room rates Flamingo:
Lodge rooms are $88 per night with taxes.
Cabins are $110 per night with taxes. Cabins have full kitchen.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 05:27:27 By john Scopetta 68
Steve, is coming down tonight to fish tomorrow I will confirm him, but we are in for sure. Thanks Don for the info. It will be a great weekend.
The boat is a Maverick 21 with a special edition bass boat type 225 HP Yamaha, transom plate and K plane trim tabs with small electric propellers on the tabs for less poling. It flays!!!!
In fact is almost as fast as the big boat which is a 36 Deep Impact with triple 250 Mercs. It should go seventy plus also. We like getting there fast.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 06:49:20 By Don H. '57
As I once heard a comedian say,"I didn't know fish could swim that fast." :-)

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 09:21:15 By john Scopetta 68
Don, my motto has always been, let the rich ones have their mega sports fishing boats with a captain and two mates, is that really fishing I mean have you really paid the price to deserve to be hooked up with that big fish on the line??? I enjoy the speed getting there is half the fun when you can cruse at 42 knots all day the ground you cover in amazing. My big boat is somewhere between an open fisherman and a Ferrari.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/21/2004 09:41:13 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don , whats the size of those cabins??????Can it be checked on the internet????? I might be back by then from N.Carolina....let me know ...you guys fish and I'll cook....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/22/2004 09:46:42 By Don H. '57
Gaston,
Go to Flamingolodge.com and you can see pictures and discriptions of the cabins and lodge rooms. It's basic accomodations, but always clean and comfortable. I would say about the same as Belize, except the a/c works at Flamingo.
John, I know what you mean about cruising around in the boat, running fast early morning on flat water with the sun comimg up.. Sometimes fishing becomes secondary.I think you'll enjoy the ride across Whitewater Bay to Shark River. About 15 miles and balls out! Several fishing spots in between.Howevre, my skiff won't run with yours at that speed. But since you won't know where you're going....:-)

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/22/2004 10:15:23 By John Dannelly 1957
I'm in for the Stags Flamingo outing and will arrive on 11/03. I have been on several Flamingo outings but never stayed at the Lodge. Always in the cabins. The cabins I have stayed in have all been the same. One bedroom with two beds and a sleeper sofa in the dinning-sitting room. Full kitchen with a bath. Comfortable. In case anyone cares the moon phase will be the last quarter (noon on Nov 5).

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/22/2004 11:25:03 By john Scopetta 68
Not showing off, just telling fish stories, released a nice sailfish today fishing off Miami and got two 10 pound cows lost the bull somewhere around fifteen to twenty. For those non fishermen readers I am describing Mahi-Mahi not mammals.
Ready to make reservations for November give the word or you know me I will go anyway even if no one shows. You don't have to twist my arm to go fishing specially some place I have never been to.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 09:20:46 By Don H. '57
John,
When we get a good number for Brothers making the trip I'll make reservation at Flamingo.I have to pay for the first night for each cabin.Guess cabins is the choice due to the kitchen.
Congrats on your sail. Just got back from the Inlet. Landed three snook in about 1/2 hour. Had to get back to watch the Gold Medal round for softball.Didn't do any live baiting due to time constraints.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 05:14:33 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, we want pictures????????

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 07:09:21 By Don H. '57
A litle tough geeting any pictures where I'm fishing-of the jetty. Plus I don't think anyone fishing there would know how to operate a digital. It's always a rush to get the snook back in the water as soon as possible. First of all it can be darn tough getting the big ones up on the jetty bulkhead, and then trying to find someone to take a pic---but I'll try.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 07:22:54 By Don H. '57
John D.-What does it mean to us that the moon will be in the last quarter? Should we change the date so the gods will be more favorable? :-)

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 08:25:27 By Stephen Bischoff '69
I am witness to John's release of the Atlantic
Sail. I was backing down to position the boat to
bring the sail aboard. It didn't take long because of those 3- 250 Mercury's. John wanted to of course release the sail but I had better
ideas which was to Smoke it. As I was leadering
the fish I reached down to grab the bill and
the knot broke. Good-bye smoker !!! John was the
typical great angler. First Sail on the new boat !! Eye to eye with that Sail ,it made me feel
good to see it swim away . John's friend David
failed to work the camera so no pictures.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 08:47:10 By Don H. '57
We all know that fishermen don't stretch the truth. From a Brother, no pictures needed.Steve, are you making the Flamingo trip, and if so will you need a cabin by yourself?
Overall, we can get three to a cabin with one sleeping on the pull-out couch.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 10:06:04 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don, nobody is questioning the catch, I just figured Steve would have his camera...Last person in the world I would question about fish or fishing would be John...

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/23/2004 11:29:11 By John Dannelly 1957
Don, regarding the moon phase for Flamingo.... I have had good fishing on every moon phase and bad fishing on every moon phase. The only conditions I would want to avoid would be day-time fishing on the full moon and a west wind. Your point is well taken - we are going anyway so what difference does it make.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/24/2004 09:38:43 By Don H. '57
Been trying to get in touch with the Commodore to see if he can make it. Anyone talking to him bring him up to speed. I've called, but no response as yet.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/24/2004 11:00:40 By john Scopetta 68
Steve thanks for the confirmation, It was a typical Stags fishing day Steve drove down from Vero and made it on time we had invited a couple of friends David and William and only one made it my brother dint make it because had actually competed in a triathlon that morning at Crandon Park he is getting in great shape for a guy that just hit the 50 mark. We ran out 30 miles on the GPS and of course got in a fight with some A holes in another boat that cut us off. We were ready to bord them and kick their butts but they backed down. Next time we are bringing the paint guns to handle these weekend warriors.
We then found a log and got three nice dolphin, lost the bull when my friend David slid off the bow and flung the rod overboard he promised to pay for it. We then decided to live bait on the edge and got the sail. Had a really good time and lots of laughs great music, great beer, great company and good fishing for Miami. Let's go to Flamingo!!!

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/25/2004 07:19:03 By Stephen Bischoff '69
Don,
Just need to confirm the dates so there are no conflicts. I would arrive on Friday afternoon,
hopefully fish the early evening, fish Saturday, and maybe Sunday. We haven't decided on the boat yet. I would like to fish sometime with you up in Jupiter or somewhere up here. I had dinner at Chucks on the Ft. Pierce Inlet last night and the jacks and snook were hammering the
herring as I ate my Fried Shrimp.

Don get one cabin for George and I but we will not be there probably until the fourth because of work. We will be bringing the boat and I would like to hire a guide at least for one day.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/29/2004 05:37:48 By Don H.'57
JOhn,
Will Gaston be staying with you guys? He also arrives on the 4th. As for fishing guides there are two I got off the Internet-Cyberangler: Bob LeMay 954-435-5666, Tony Traad 305-246-5142. You can also go to keyword on the Internet for "fishing guides flamingo". I haven't fished with either of these guys. I have fished with Ariel Cabrera. He should have paid me-don't recommend. There is another one Chris Dean who is excellent, especially if you want to fly fish a little. I think his number is 305-666-0908.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/29/2004 05:54:06 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don, John and George will be staying together ...I will most likely be getting a place for me....All the cooking will be done in my place as I have been designated as the cook, since I don't know how to fish.....Hey I will be there to enjoy the time to be shared by all of us ...... if I'm allowed to fish with you guys thats good too....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/29/2004 07:08:21 By Terrence W. Grant
John:

Save your money on guides...Don and Jim know where they are going...just follow them of course I dont know where your going to fish...whats the draft on your boat?....Gaston the last designated cook we had John D had to cancel as his boat wouldnt start...cooking was left up to Jim and Don and i who are worthless..

I'm trying to figure out a way I can go...so many frigging problems at present

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/29/2004 07:43:27 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 08:36:36 By john Scopetta 68
Great to see Bobby is coming he will be a great addition to our team, since Bobby fishes in the professional King fish circuit he can add some depth and experience to the late sixties team. Gaston, Steve and I wont have to bear the abuse of the fifties boys all alone.
Terry is good to see you back in action after the distraction caused by hurricane Charlie. You are lucky that the one that hit the Carolinas, Gaston!!! didn't come your way. That one steals all the ladies.
As far as Garcia showing up in his white horse to Flamingo, I would not whant to be on the 50tys team.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 10:21:22 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, all we need is Helmly to come along and make the late 60's "DREAM TEAM" a force to deal with.....See if you can get George to find a couple of the 70's guys together and then we will have a group to represent them....What do you think...??????? John Gibson could be a good addition....He lives in the Keys...

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 11:00:12 By Don H. '57
I spoke to John Gibson at the Night Out and he said he was going to make the Flamingo trip. Kavney had previously spoken to him about the trip.
You blue water boys will find out that the back country fishing requires more skill than hooking on a goggle eye and towing it around all day :-). I'll be throwing top water plugs tight to the mangroves, etc., etc.
John S.-did you decide on a guide? Might be a good idea for one day. At least four of us will be there the night before and leaving early on Thursday for the bush. These are some of the details that need to be worked out. By the way, no cell phone coverage at Flamingo so we'll have to set up a coordination plan.
I'll be making cabin arrangements today, will post later.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 11:01:47 By Don H. '57
P.S. Haven't seen any king fish at Flamimgo lately. Don't want Bob to be disappointed.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 12:37:18 By John Dannelly 1957
John S., if you are serious about a guide for a day Jim Anson would be a good option if he is available. Jim fishes Flamingo a lot. A Gables High track guy, 1957 I think. He is well known as an angler and a guide. Anson is one of the Captains on the Florida Sportsman magazine radio fishing show. Jim was the MET Master Angler several times and the only person to ever win the MET Guided Master Angler and the Unguided Master Angler in the same year. He used to be a member of South Florida Sports Fisherman. The last time he was the club speaker he said he or his anglers have something like 160 IGFA world records. An interesting man and a guide that is anxious to share information. I have his phone number but not in front of me.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 02:30:26 By Don H.'57
John and John- Anson fishes out of a 15 ft. +/_ skiff. John S., maybe he would use your boat. And John D. is correct, he catches fish and is one of the "originals" of Flamingo. Also a part time butcher. Maybe he's got a deal on pork chops. If you use a guide please make sure he understands what you're after. You definately don't want to set up on a bunch of trout ( which will be out of season) or jacks, typical tourist stuff. If you want a challenge, see if you can get one that will pole the flats for sight fishing reds.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 05:34:14 By John Scopetta 68
I am serious about a guide the perfect one to take would be Ralph Ortega of NFL fame he is very knowledgeable in fishing Flamingo. And would be fun to hear his NFL stories unless anyone has a problem with Ralph attending the trip, being that he was not in Stags???
The skill required is inherited in the blood, Gaston, Bishoff and I can fish anything at any time even if we have never fished it before. If they swim we can catch them. We know all the basics and is not difficult to adjust to any type of angling. So bring on the competition the boys are ready. We will be king on the back country and the flats. We don't catch jacks we release them. Even if they are my Tocayos.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 05:52:56 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, I think Ralph would be interested , we were talking about it at both funerals...its ok with me .......He and Tony should have been in Stags anyways....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 06:41:39 By Don H.'57
My vote is open enrollment for the trip. Don't see why anyone would have a problem with that. It would very interesting to hear his experiences. He may know some of the guys I coached in Pop Warner that made it to the big time. Now that would be wild.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 06:45:33 By Don H.'57
John, what is a Tocayos? Don't you have to catch'em to release'em?

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 07:03:15 By Terrence W. Grant
Guys:

I'm trying to work things out to go...I told Don I would let him know by Wednesday 5pm...my insight tells me "we are asking this guy and that guy"....you have to figure on only 3 boats (as 1 could be broken down) out of the 4. So you've got 3 (less than 18') boats with 12 guys...doesnt add up and somebody could be left at the dock with no cell phone, TV etc...i dont think rooms are the problem...boats are...last time we went we were to have 3 boats 2 never made it and the one we had broke down( been fixed)...it takes the old man of the crowd to bring up these things

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 07:15:58 By Terrence W. Grant
And in Flamingo there is no casinos, Russians,or even George or his doctor friend...if there isnt any room on the boat...of course you could stay back and watch Gastonnnnnnn prepare the dinner of the evening...also I agree with Jim...John D doesnt do the shopping

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 09:10:44 By john Scopetta 68
Terry, you are correct, some would not be able to go, this a good reason to sneak in to Naples and visit all those contacts you said you had when you were single and partying down in the sun and fun capital of the world Naples Florida. Seriously I believe Ralph has a boat and I think we can probably charter a couple it can't be that outrages is still before thanksgiving???

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 09:16:58 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, relax we can still charter like John said....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/30/2004 09:54:47 By Terrence W. Grant
You young big money guys (charter)...i'm on a fixed income..
The top spot in the nation is the Witches Brew on 41 in Naples about 3 blocks south of Pine Ridge then everyone goes over to the Ritz Carlton. I know it by reputation only as been there once for 9 minutes..got wisked away in a new corvette to watching sunsets at Naples Beach Club to valet at the Ritz to 2 to 3 mill condo on the beach...just ask anyone who knows Naples they will confirm...hell I'm tired of having to confirm things to you guys...trust me

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 00:06:03 By john Scopetta 68
Terry you are going to Naples we know you are the man and we believe you know your way around we will sneak in to town on Friday night and have a good old Stags party. When Don talks about the Reds he is going to catch we think he is talking about the Russians.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 00:36:58 By Terrence W. Grant
John:

You must remember that the only way to get to Flamingo is via US 1 in Florida City and head West 35 miles. You cant sneak into Naples unless via boat (long trip) in frog man outfits. You can dock at the Cove and catch a cab to "The Brew"and look for a yellow Corvette. Naples by the way is 3rd richest town in the US average per capita income almost $70,000 and it's mostly from dividend and interest...I was looking for one of those rich ones and found Russi who is poorer than a church mouse (go figure)...by the way the ones at the Brew dont look like the Russians and are older

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 06:31:23 By Terrence W. Grant
Guys;

In following up on my note of 8/30 7:03pm...it would seem that with this guy and that guy MAYBE GOING it makes Don H. job impossible to reserve xxx number of rooms/cabins...not only it's hard to know what to reserve but only two parties John S and Gaston & Bobby Injay have said they are rooming together.(Then we have guys coming in on different days) Some how you guys should be e mailing one another to fix the room situation...Don is going to be on the hook for the first night for xxx number of rooms which could be $1,000...Let's get organized another approach is for those that know who they are rooming with..... Book it yourself on line Flamingo Lodge Flamingo Florida and you will probably get a better rate www.flamingolodge.com.

Secondly, guys this place is isolated and you just dont walk up and charter a boat like in the Keys...we need to be firm on the boat situation. Lets say the $$$ guys charter a boat in advance...they will be fishing together for 2 or three days as another brother may not want to pay the $130 apiece to fish. Guys I count 14 guys going and maybe going that's 5 to 7 boats and we have 3 maybe 4.

Lets help Don out as even with a CGHS learning anyone can see it gets confusing.

I will know for sure what i'm doing tomorrow and as most of you know I need a private room. I can book direct or I'll pay more than my fair share to have one of the bedrooms in a double cabin.

Sorry to be a preacher...but I've always considered myself a man of the cloth

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 06:45:21 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, the only cloth you were associated with was ...satin sheets in some out of the place in Butt f...USA or latin America...don't worry so much it will all work out.....Don , will use his unlimited American Express card and we will be happy ever after.......If he has a limit problem with his balance he can contact my Brother Gonzalo and get an increase on his limit.....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 10:18:00 By john Scopetta 68
Great Idea Gaston can I get a limit increase on my card??? I had forgotten all about Gonzalos prestigious position through in some travel miles while your at it and we can head to Costa Rica to wait out the Charlie. I agree with Terry everyone make your own reservation and that way you will all have the room we wanted. The boats??? we will each make our own fishing arrangements but no one will be left out even if we have to charter additional boats.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 08/31/2004 10:48:44 By Terrence W. Grant
John:

Where are you going to wait out CHARLIE he left 18 days ago...new one to wait out is FRANCES...no wonder you didn't see the SUPERMAN show. But I love you bro...your the best and so's your capable assistant M..........also if I had your money I wouldn't need AMEX

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/01/2004 09:00:47 By Don H.'57
OK, I give up. Agree, make your own reservations. This does implify things with all the late arrivals and possible cancellations. I'll make reservations for me and Jim, and will contact John D. to handle him and Keno. Remember that the cabins can sleep three so anyone is welcome who wants to sleep on the pull out couch.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/01/2004 09:12:49 By john Scopetta 68
Uuuupppssss, screwed that one up, Frances just doesn't seem a tough enough name for a storm as mean looking as this one. It does not look favorable for the East coast bunch is just a matter of time until we know who will get wracked. Not a pretty picture. I got the boat out of the water and in to a warehouse at the manufactures. The only other alternative was to wait until the last minute and run in the opposite direction. This has not been a good year so far for Florida, let's hope this one makes a radical last minute turn, we need some help from up top.
If everything turns out well the fishing is usually very good after the storm goes by it makes them disoriented and they hit everything. Hope that is all we have to worry about next Sunday.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/01/2004 10:27:27 By Don H.'57
My skiff is sitting in open storage on the trailer. Hope it's still there after this thing passes. John, good luck with your big boat.

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/06/2004 11:43:58 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, todays Miami Herald front page reads "FPL crews work to repair damage in GODZILLA'S path.....Should have said...Terry " GOLLIATH " Grant takes on Charlie and Frances.....

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/09/2004 06:56:56 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
For the Belize seven, did you guys see the Miami Herald today???? we were not far away from those Cuberas ...

Re: NEXT FISHING EXPEDITION (includes lessons by TerryPosted at 09/11/2004 08:47:29 By john Scopetta 68
Hey Gus, at the risk of sounding redundant, remember what I always tell you fish were the fish are and you will catch fish. Unfortunately we hit Belize at the wrong time not the season or the weather just the wrong freaking time because the fish were not there.
We had good guides good tackle thanks to the fact that we dint listen to the experts and brought our own. Nice fishing attire, very important to catching fish and some unorthodox lures that the guide did not want to use and boom!!! SURPRISE! It produced the big king and t
