Dear All: My computer has gone crazy today so will try once again to update you on Joe Atwoods recovery. He went home Sat. and is glad to be back at the farm. He is feeling good, still some expected pain and having a hard time getting up and down. I didn't go see him this weekend as I felt like Joe and Lee needed some R and R. He vows he will be ready to go our our 1954 class reunion in Sept. and knowing him he will be ready. I know he would love to hear from some of his brothers if you need his address I can be reached at sylvia.atwood@sfcc.edu

John: I don't think my ears were burning Sat.but hope all the discussion you and Ed had were positive. Ed and I have been friends for a long long time and I think the world of he and Pat. They are really working hard on our reunion. Hope your day is a happy one. Sylvia

Sylvia, please give my best to "Coach Atwood".
Joe was my football coach along with Terry Ward in 1964 at the Coral Gables Youth Center.
Joe had more of an impact on what I am today, then my own father did.
Sylvia, there is not a finer Man on the face of this earth then Joe Atwood.
My prayers and thoughts are with him.
Herb Stebbins (Stags 1968)

I talked to Joe a few days ago and he seem to be doing fine on his recovery. I know from experience that you just don't come back like nothing ever happened. Recovery from open heart surgery is slow and steady, Joe seem to be moving in the right direction. As Sylvia, as say he's looking forward to the 50th. Reunion of the Class of 1954. He said most of the Brothers from 1954 plan to be there. Don Humphries and I plan to go for Friday night, maybe even Saturday night. Terry Grant said he may go, but that was before Charley. If, anyone want to go the info is on a thread started by Chris Christman in Feb. of this year. I told Joe I would be looking for him, if I make the reunion. Here is the link for further info.

Dear All: We would love to have as many of you as possible to join us at the 50th reunion for 1954 graduating class. We have had to change places because of damage done to the hotel by Charlie. The new location is: Shades Of Green, 1950 West Magnolia Palm Drive,Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830. Joe,Lee and myself will be riding down with Phil Yonge( who is in the Bahama boarding things up)and Scrapper Smith and his wife. We will be in a motor home which will give Joe the opportunity to sleep or rest. It has really made him happy to hear from so many of you. I hope everyone is safe with Francis knocking on our doors. I think we have all learned that you don't take hurricanes lightly. My daughter and her husband or leaving this afternoon to board up their two places just below Cresent Beach. Again please come to our reunion - and may God watch over each and every one of you and keep you and yours safe.

Stag Brothers and friends:

Joe is not doing well, he has not accomplished what his doctors had hoped for in the year since his open heart surgery. He is having balance trouble and fell several weeks ago and had to have 12 stitches in his face. Joe is using a walker but we hope this will not be a permanent situation.A new evaluation will be made on the 15th to determine if a pace maker is necessary. He doesn't have much of an appetite and is loosing a lot of weight. Joe and Lee both have a very positive attitude and they are enjoying watching their new house being built. It's at a stage now where the weather won't cause any more delays. My son in laws company will be building a pool for them and maybe that will help with the healing by being able to get a little exercise. We are all praying that maybe the combinatios of all the different medications he is taking may be part of the problem. I know he would love to hear from you as you will always have a special place in his heart. How could any of us forget all the wonderful and exciting high school days? More information will be forthcoming after the 15th. I wish you all a safe and happy fourth of July.

Sylvia, thank you for the information on Joe.

OK guys, time to do something that most of us hardly ever do any more. Write a letter or note to Joe using real paper (not an electronic letter with electronic delivery) and get it into the United States Postal Service delivery system.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/05/2005 09:11:45 By Mark Redwine - Counts class of 70'
Hi guy’s,
I hope that you don’t mind me jumping onto your message board but I played football for “Coach Atwood” at CGYC in 1966. I went to High Springs, Fl to visit my mom (She and my dad retired there 28 yrs. ago, small world.) and had the opportunity to go and spend a few hours with Coach and Lee. It was wonderful to be able to express the gratitude to him for all that he had done to mold me into the person that I have become.
Things that we hear today, like Honor, Integrity, Honesty and Character are not just words to Coach Atwood, they are who he is and next to my father, Coach Atwood had the greatest influence in putting meaning to these words for me.
I just wanted to let you guy’s that may not know Joe Atwood personally know what kind of a man and brother you have in him and a great friend and mentor to all of us.
Mark Redwine – Counts class of 70’

This is to Herb Stebbins and anyone else that played for Coach. All of his pictures from the Boy’s Club and CGYC are gone; I made a copy of my 1966 team picture and am sending it to him. I know it would be a great encouragement to him if any others could do the same. Thanks, he needs and deserves all of our support right now.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/05/2005 09:47:41 By sylvia.atwood
Mark: It is guy's like you that made all the difference in Joe's life. Coaching has been his whole life and the dedication and love he put into the game shows it was all worth while when remarks like yours are made. He coached until health made him give it up. He never complains, even now, and when ask how he feels, his reply is always, Sis I'm doing o.k. Keep him in your prayers, and Stag brothers, I know he would love to hear from you. He can't do too much these days so a card or phone call means a lot. Lee is off for the summer and that gives them a chance to get out once in a while. I think he uses his lawnmower as a means to get around the farm, I knew he would find a way. Guy's he really loves all of you, and is interested in knowing how the "boy's" he coached turned out. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/05/2005 12:54:42 By Herb Stebbins (68)
Mark, those were beautiful words. Joe is one of a kind.
If you go to the Counts Website and go to "Counts Sports Photos" you will find a picture of the 1964 CGYC Unlimited team. Joe is in the top left hand corner. Top right is Bob Nelson. Who you will not find is Terry Ward. Terry shared Joe's and Bob's passion for coaching. At the time this picture was taken Terry was in surgery getting half his faced removed due to Cancer. Two weeks latter he was back coaching. Always in great pain and wearing a mask to hide the surgery. He coached us until he passed away.
I only bring this up to display the commitment Joe, Terry and Bob had for coaching young boys and turning them into men.
I took a copy of that 1964 CGYC picture with me when I went to the Stags Reunion (every coach but one in that picture was in Stags) I wanted to give it to Joe. I knew that this might be my last chance to tell him what an impact he had on my life.
It was a moving experience to say the least.
As I spilled my heart out to him tears came to his eyes. Boy, did he touched my heart.
Before I left that night I gave him a big hug and the Stags Grip. I will never forget the smile on his face.
Mark, in that football team picture you will see Bill Copeland (Counts), John Flynn (Miami High Titans), Tom Bailey(Decallion), Steve Spooner (Cresent), David Saunders(Stags), Bill Levy (Miami High) Kenny Lions (Miami High) and me.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/05/2005 02:29:24 By Mark Redwine - Counts class of 70'
Herb,
In 64' I was playing on the 115 lb. team for Vern Tinsman. CGYC had an amazing group of coaches that prepared us for any high school team.
I went to Coral Park and have regreated not going to Gables and playing for Coach Kotys (I had the choice). We had Frank Downing at CP and he wouldn't have qualified to coach CGYC's paperweight teams.
I am going to post a request on the Counts website and see if any of the other guy's may have any team pictures that hey can make copies of and send to Coach.
It has been a pleasure seeing how Stags has worked so hard to keep in touch with each other, it is a real tribute to you guy's.
Best Regards,
Mark

Herb & Mark:

Beautiful words and brings back memories..Joe & Tommy lived on Miller Drive (believe that was the name) and Tommy and I worked at Margaret Ann on Red and US 1. During lunch hour we would go to his house for a sandwich and visit with their dad. Joe's roots and mannerism's came from his dad. Joe was known around the locker room as Pappy for his calmest and wisdom. Terry was the one who got me into TDT and was my big brother both there and Sigma Chi at the University of Miami. Terry was one of the quickest funniest guys I've ever known. Do you guys rmember how he used to jog off the field? Arms straight down at sides with wrists flexed back and his pinky finger cocked. We used to kid him. I taught Terry how to do the long snap which he was very good at and took the job away from Rick Schuler "CHINK" . I worked with Rick for his brother in land survying summer of 57. Terry's mom worked for the Herald and she too had many words of wisdom for me. I introduced Terry to his wife Crystal and I see she is now married to Bob Clouse who was in XC...both of these guys coached with a kind firm steady approach whereas Paul Kilcoyne had a more outspoken do it my way or the highway approach....

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/05/2005 06:58:59 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Dear Joe,I was one of those "LUCKY" guys that had the opportunity to have had contact with you , way before I knew you were a STAG..... My family did not have the financial resources to provide the given opportunity to participate at the Coral Gables Youth Center....I arrived from Cuba in 1959 .... I used to go to the CGYC dances and always looked at those trophy cases and hoped one day I could be a part of it.....thanks to Vern Tisman and the financial help from you Mr Atwood ,it became a reality years later..... Joe thank you for the chance you provided me ....I have no way to re-pay you back for your Kindness.....Like Mark said, you provided that needed guideness that allowed me and other young children to become succesfull adults in life ....you may not remember , but thats ok ,I do.....get well ...

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/06/2005 01:00:55 By John Dannelly 1957
I was a freshman at Gables when Joe was a senior. I don't remember having Joe as a coach at the SouthWest Boys' Club (U.S. 1 and SW 32nd Avenue, now the Hank Kline Boys' and Girls' Club) but I know the level of interest he took in his players. I played under Hank Kline when Hank was still coaching. That was before Hank had to give up coaching to devote his efforts to management. Hank Kline and Joe Atwood had several common traits. They cared about their players as boys and later as men. They were more interested in developing the boy than the player. They tried to follow their careers well into adulthood. They were proud of them, they wanted to hear from them and received great joy as they learned about the accomplishments of their former players. I visited Hank Kline several times a year until Hank was no longer at the Club. Usually I would call Hank to schedule a visit. Sometimes he would call me, typically when he had read or learned something about my work or my community involvment. A part of those conversations with Hank always included questions about my work, my community projects, how was I doing, how were my parents, and always, always, "what can you tell me about my other boys?" Joe Atwood has those same kind of feelings and that kind of attitude about his players. Joe takes a lifelong interest in his boys and his brothers.

I think Joe was a player-coach at the Boys' Club during an intermural 18 and under baseball summer league one year when I was about 14. The players were mixed ages from about 13-18 playing on the same team with an older player serving as player-coach. Very informal, almost pick-up play with volunteer coaches and umpires. My memory is fuzzy regarding that summer program but other player-coaches I seem to remember were Ed Harrison (Stags), Jack Langer (Stags), Sheldon Dunkle (Miami High), Tom Pendray (Stags) and George Malvestuto (Stags). Joe was not my coach but I remember him instructing me on the fine art of baseball players and chewing tobacco. I begged him for a chew, he gave me some, I got sick and 53 years later have not tried chewing even once since then.

I doubt that Joe will read this message thread unless Lee or Sylvia prints it for him. What would please Joe very much would be to receive letters through the mail.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/06/2005 10:35:08 By sylvia.atwood
John: I will print these wonderful messages and send him a copy. Thanks to all of you for your kind and true words. You will always be a part of his life and one that he can look back on and remember with a smile. I don't think he will ever realize the impact he had on so many. I know we all realize in this, our twilight years, the people who played such a important role in our lives. Joe always made me feel special, even as a skinny little 15 year old following his brother around. As stated, Joe was a lot like his father. Fireball, as he was called was one of the toughest men I have ever had the honor of knowing, and was quite an athlete in his younger days. He worked at the telephone company until retirement and was responsible for all the wooden poles install from Miami to Key West. Those were the days of wild wilderness, snakes and alligators. Some of the tales his men told were unbelievable. Joe came from a good background and made the name Atwood one to remember, especially at the boys club. When he moved to High Springs he began coaching girls softball and became loved by all the girls and their parents and he was still called Pappy, back from his high school days as a very young father. Keep the messages coming and I will send them to him. I will be out of pocket beginning tomorrow for about two weeks, unexpected surgery. Keep us both in your prayers. I feel like I know all of you, not just the ones from the 50's. And I guarantee Joe will come through this with flying colors and will be around for a long time to come.
If it be possible, some of you get together and take a little trip to High Springs to see him, he and Lee would love that. Make a fishing trip out of it. We have a lot of good fishing in this part of Florida beginning with Cedar Key and many many other spots. Remember we are in the middle of the state and have water on both sides. sa

JOHN, WHAT CLASS WAS GEORGE MALVESTUTO IN AT GABLES? WE WORKED TOGETHER AT THE COUNTY JAIL IN THE EARLY 70'S. I NEVER KNEW HE WAS IN STAGS. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY WHERE I GO I MEET SOMEONE FROM STAGS.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/06/2005 12:21:43 By sylvia.atwood
David: I think George graduated in 1953. I know he was a year or two ahead of me, and I graduated in 1954. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/06/2005 12:49:33 By DAVID
I wish you and Joe the best and my prayers are with the both of you. I was not a member of Stags but friends with many. Stags is a brotherhood who have a strong bond which can not be broken.

I only wish I could have joined this fine club but the cards were not with me.

I did see the photo of George in the 53 composite, looked the same when we worked together.

Take care of yourself and tell Joe he has additional friend who might not have known him; but admire him from what I read and hear from many who have expressed their concern for him and the lives he has touched.

David

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/06/2005 07:13:12 By Terrence W. Grant
I remember George he could cut on a dime as a half back and he truly had 6 pack abs...he had a way of using his hands to support himself on the ground as he was leaning one way or the other on a cut back. You would think you tackled him but he wasnt down

His sister graduated in 56

Sylvia...good luck on your procedure....

Terry

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/07/2005 12:55:25 By John Dannelly 1957
David, George Malvestuto was in the Gables class of 1953. He is deceased. He had great balance and body control. He often avoided a direct hit, would spin off the tackler's grasp, make a three point landing (both feet and one hand), and recover his balance to gain more yards.

Sylvia, I thought I had your address but can't seem to locate it. Probably a senior moment. Please send me an email with your address. johndannelly@bellsouth.net
Thanks for your offer to print messages and deliver them to Joe. Good luck. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/09/2005 09:25:47 By Bob Injaychock
Sylvia,
I hope Joe is doing better. I spoke with my father who was one of Joe's coaches at Gables back in the day last night and mentioned Joe. He has fond memories of Joe and wanted to make sure you passed on his thoughts and prayers to Joe. When asking him about Joe he remebers him as the first football player at Gables that really could play the game. Quite a complement for a school that did so well and he was the start!!
When Joe was a Gables the coaches thought of him as good guy that others thought alot of, coming from my father who is my personel hero, quite a complement.
Please say hello for my father and we do hope he continues to improve.

Bob Injaychock

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/10/2005 06:35:05 By Terrence W. Grant
Bobby, your comments about Joe and what the coaches thought of him brought back memories of that period. At the time outlaw fraternities such as TDT were really feeling the pressure to disband and/or being expelled from school. I never will forget coach Kotys making a speech in the locker room telling the guys to quit TDT, Chinks, Phi Delts or you will be kicked off the team. I dont think he realized how many of the players were in these groups. I do know that your dad did as well as Krutulis. Your dad confronted me and asked if I were a member and I said yes, he said it would be a "good idea" if I quit, he gave a wink (which i dont know if intentional or not) turned around and walked off. He never brought it up again. As I mentioned to you in the past your dad was my hero also and literaly took me off the path of despair. I agree with your dad that Joe was a true team leader. Not only an exceptional ball player but a lot more mature than the rest of us.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/18/2005 11:49:36 By sylvia.atwood
To all who have responded with concern about my surgery and Joe's condition. Mine went well and I am back to work at the college for the first time today. I only work four hours per day so time goes by fast and I still enjoy being with the students. I have not been able to get in touch with Joe the last few days, have left messages with no reply. He had a doctors appointment on Friday and I have a feeling they may have put him back in the hospital. Will let all of you know as soon as I find out. Remember-He may be having health problems but is still as tough as nails.
John: I didn't know whether you wanted my e-mail or home address, both are as follows:
sylvia.atwood@sfcc.edu
3331 N.W. 54th Terrace
Gainesville, Fl 32606
Bob: I will give yours and your dad's best wishes to Joe. I knew Coach Krutulis well as I was at Gables from 1951-1954 and remember him as being loved and respected by all and I am sure he still is.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/18/2005 11:53:36 By sylvia.atwood
Bob: I put Krutulis instead of Injaychock, one of my senior moments which seem to be more often than I would like to admit. Your dad was at our 1954 -50th class reunion and didn't look much older than he did when I graduated. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 07/19/2005 10:31:19 By sylvia.atwood
Dear All: I finally got in touch with Joe last night and I was right,he had been in the hospital. Went in last Wed. and came out on Fri. much to the dismay of the nurses and doctors. He told them he was leaving at 5:30 that night regardless. You know Joe, if he makes a decision no one keeps him from accomplishing it. Anyway, the reason he was admitted: He had become severly anemic and when they checked his blood level is was dangerously low. This is the reason he has been so tired and loosing his balance. After three pints of blood he said he began to feel like a new man. Not even using his walker anymore. Lee says he's back to his old self again, and she is so pleased. He does have one more hurdle to handle. While doing some of his testing the doctors found several nodules on his colon and one looks suspicious. They have done a biopisy and will get the results later this week.Keep them in your prayers and I will let you know the results as soon as I can. As I have said many times before, you guys are the greatest. I loved all the Stags from the 50's and feel like now I love all the rest of you. Take care of each other, that's what brothers are for and the older we get the more important it is to let each other know your feelings. Joe turned 70 in May so we are all getting up there in years. Have a happy day.sa

I spoke to Joe yesterday afternoon. He was in good spirits. He's getting around better and is getting his strength back. It's so wonderful talking to him about the days at the Youth Center. Phone calls really pick his spirits up.
After speaking to Mark Redwine (Counts), I called the Coral Gables Youth Center to see if we could find some pictures of Joe and his teams. I went through about 5 volumes of pictures and memorabilia. There were no pictures of Joe or any of the Teams he coached. If any of you have pictures of the days at the Boys Club or CGYC, please let me know. Maybe we could put a little something together for him. It would be a nice way to thank Joe for all he has done, for so many.

First let me say I have never seen so many handsome men in one gathering as you had Sat. night. Looks like a good time was had by all. I think I will move back to Miami!!
I have some not so good news concerning Joe. On Friday when his wife Lee came home from work, Joe was incoherent and confused. After talking to him a few minutes she called 911 and took him to the hospital. It turns out Joe had a stroke. Only a mild one but with his health not so good, it did its' damage. I went to see him yesterday and found him in fairly good spirits but in a lot of pain. His head had been hurting badly since Fri. and they could not
seem to deaden the pain. He did talk to me a little but kept telling me how much pain he is in.I only stayed about 1/2 an hour so he could rest. I have not talked to Lee yet today but will keep you all posted daily. He has become anemic again which means there is still bleeding going on that they have not located. Please keep he and Lee and their children, Edward, Pam and Joleen in your prayers. Love to you all. sa

Sylvia, you are wonderful! No Stag ever had a nicer sister-in-law than Joe Atwood. Thank you for being an exceptional sister to all Stags.

John: Thank you for making me feel part of your Stag family. I thought when I graduated from Coral Gables in 1954 that was the end of my Stag relationships. Thanks to all of you, I feel just as much a part fifty one years later. I love each of you. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 08/30/2005 10:36:11 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Dear Guys: Just wanted to let you know that Joe is not doing very well. I spoke with Lee yesterday and there does not seem to be any progress, and maybe just the opposite. He is not eating and because he is so weak they have had to stop his physical therapy. Keep him in your prayers and I know receiving cards from you would lift his spirits. This is his sixth week being in the hospital and doing nothing but staying in the bed and sleeping most of the time. He loves you guys so please keep in touch with him. If anyone wants more information call me at home: (352) 371-7393. I work from 9:00 to 1:00 and you can also reach me during the day at my e-mail address. Hope all of you faired well from the storm. sa

Stag Brothers: You never know what a day will bring? Isn't there a song by that name? Anyway, yesterday the message concerning Joe was not a very good one and I had almost prepared myself for the worst. Lee called last night and guess what? He is better. The test results have come back and it shows that the Bacterial infection is no worse and is actually clearing up. I think Lee is in a state of shock. Things so different from the day before. Anyway, he will be released today, and will go by ambulance to a rehab. center in Trenton, which is near their home and also near where she works. The Doctors say they have done all they can and the rest is up to him. He's got to eat and do the exercises to get his strenth back. In the true Atwood style he is mad they are sending him there and says he can recooperate just as well at home. Lee has to be real firm with him and he resents that. I think Joe has come back to his world and I thank God for this new recovery. I will go and see him on Saturday and will take him some home made peach cobbler, and see if I can persuade him to eat a little. I know it is hard as he hasn't done much eating while in the hospital. Please send cards, Lee goes home for a bit each day and will take them to him. Just a reminder of his address:8649 N.E. 40 Ct. Rd. High Springs, FL 32643. Thank you for all your support and caring during his recovery and Jim K. looks like our conversation took a happy turn from last night.Have a great day all of you and it looks like the sun is shinning on the Atwoods' again. Love to you all. Does anyone have Bob Ross's phone number? He called Lee twice yesterday but didn't get through and I told her I would call him and catch him up on the latest. I called for information in Nahunta, Ga. but they didn't have

Stags: Just another update on Joe. It proves that prayers are answered. He was released from the hospital and is now at the rehab place(much to his dislike). The Doctors told Lee she had to stop doing for him so he will do for himself, this way he will get well sooner. The other good news is that she can take him home for a few hours this weekend. That will do more good than anything. Thanks for all your wonderful concern and prayers, you are truly the greatest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.I will keep you posted on Joes' progress. Have a wonderful weekend, be safe, and I love you. sa

Sylvia, I have Bob Ross's telephone number and e-mail address. This phone number is at his antique shop in Nahunta 1-912-462-8686. His e-mail address is Bobross@btconline.net. I think this is his home phone number 1-912-778-5875. I hope this is helpful. I'm glad to hear that Joe is doing better. I remember him but I doubt that he remembers me as I was two years behind and wasn't as connected to the Stags as I was later. I remember Tommy, however, as a good friend. Keep in touch - I have some friends that live in Gainesville that I should probably go visit, so if I do I'll let you know so we might get together.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 09/01/2005 12:12:33 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Anne: Thanks for the information. If you have ever met Joe just once then you are his friend. Tommy has not been in good health in the past few years.. He had open heart surgery two years ago and has had quite a few problems. I saw him this weekend and he was doing a little better after being really sick for about three weeks. He has lost a lot of weight but I am sure he will put that back on eventually. I will tell him you asked. Be sure and let me know when you are planning on coming to Gainesville and we will surely meet and have dinner or something. Have a wonderful safe weekend. sa

Terry - I'm afraid the driving bit will have to wait til the gas prices go down some. I'll get there eventually, I promise.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 09/06/2005 12:09:58 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Dear All: Update on Joe. He is now in Ayres Rehab. in Trenton,Fl. very close to where they live. He had a chance to go outside for the first time in many weeks and had to be in a wheel chair but at least it was in the fresh air. His grandson and great grandchildren came to see him and the visit sure made him happy. They are trying for a Sept. 20th release, it's up to Joe and the effort he puts into eating and exercising. J. Dannelly I don't know what you said in the message you sent but it really made Lee feel good, she said it was the sweetest thing she had ever read. Thanks so much, they needed that. Everyone please keep the cards coming, encourage him to work hard on getting his strength back. I got in touch with Bill Cotton and his said Joe came out just fine from the storm. Lost power but nothing else. Let's hope you hear from the other Stag brothers in that area. Tommy Atwood has tried to get Ross Downing many times but no luck. Hope all had a good three day weekend. I sure wanted Miami to beat the Seminoles. luv. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 09/12/2005 10:00:39 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Dear All: I'm sorry to always be the bearer of sad news. Joe is back in the hospital, while at the rehap. center he developed a fever and after some testing it showed that he has an abcess behind the brain and a blood clot in his shoulder. Tomorrow he will be taken to Shands hospital, one of the best in the nation, and they will do further test on the abcess and also do a biopsy. He is being given medication to try and desolve the clot and is not responding well to anythng right now. Keep he and Lee in your prayers and I will keep you posted. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 10/10/2005 10:51:32 By sylvia j. atwood
Dear All: Just a short note, will send more information when I talk to Lee. I spoke to Joe over the week-end. He is feeling much better. His appetite has picked up and he is now walking without much help. Still has to use the walker. The stroke left him without the ability to read and write and he is in therapy for that. The greatest news is that he may possibly go home this week. That will be the best medecine of all. Keep them in your prayers and I will give more information when I get it. sa

I just had a long talk with Joe this morning. He sounded wonderful, with alot of energy and happiness. Joe will be leaving the hospital and heading home this afternoon. Joe said that leaving the hospital would be better then winning any football game.
If you know Joe, please take the time to contact him at home. Phone calls from friends is just what the doctor ordered.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 10/17/2005 09:46:51 By sylvia j. atwood
Dear All: Joe is home and loving every second of it. He is in good spirits and their new house is almost complete. He does have to go to the hospital every day, 7 days a week to receive antibotics that he can only receive from the Dr. This is hard on them, but well worth it just to be home. Lee said she has a hard time getting him off the porch, he just likes to sit there and see the world in all its glory. Looking at four walls for almost three months was just about to get to him and the openness of their place is just what he needed. I see him recovering at a much faster pace now that he is back on the farm. Thanks from him for all your prayers and good wishes, that helped a lot. Give him a call when you have time he will enjoy hearing from you. Much love to each of you. sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 10/18/2005 02:56:09 By Mark Redwine (Counts 70')
I just spoke with Joe and he sounds as good as he did back in July when I saw him. He is hoping to move into his new house in the next month or so.
He was watching videos of the football games he had missed while in the hospital (No Surprise) and I know he would like to hear from all of his brothers.
I commend all of you for the support that you have been to him through this and I would especially like to send my appreciation to 2 new friends that I have been privileged to make through all of this, Billy Adams and Herb Stebbins, you guys have been great.
Mark

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 10/19/2005 10:59:59 By sylvia j. atwood
Mark: You played a large part in helping lift Joe's spirits. The three of you, Mark, Billy and Herb have been so devoted to him for all these months. He will never forget nor will Lee and I. Mark you have called him so often and he looked forward to hearing from you each time. The next time we all get together, it will be at their new home and we will have a cook-out, we will have to pitch in so Lee doesn't have to do it all. They are both looking forward to moving in and I'm sure his family will be on hand to help and so will mine. I too am blessed to call the three of you my new friends and I know the friendship will now, always be there. Looking forward to seeing you again. love, sa

Sylvia: IF you, Joe and Lee will pick a good time for us to get together, Billy, Herb and I will take care of the food and drinks!
You have been such a great support through all of this and I can honestly say that you are one of the finest "Ladies" that I have had the pleasure of knowing.
Look forward to hearing from you again and getting together.
Mark

Mark, I'm really looking forward to getting together again. This time under much better conditions. Good country food is what he likes, and that's what he will get. He'll probabably never what to eat Steak again after we leave. It will be great to see the whole family again. If we can take a load of Sylvia and Lee then it's even better. Take care Pal!

Terry, you know you are. I hope you weren't being serious. I wish we could get more guys from Joe's class + or - a few years to attend. I will put some info up when the time gets closer.
I hope you realize that you don't need an invite to anything I'm involved with.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 10/19/2005 06:42:48 By Mark Redwine (Counts 70')
Terry: I would also like to chime in and invite you as well. Herb has had allot of great things to say about you but I have learned, especially with Herb, to believe NONE of what you hear and only 1/2 of what you see! LOL Maybe you can keep a small amount of all the fish you catch on ice.

With what you guys have been through this year with hurricanes, NC is a very nice place to live.

Batten down the hatches and stay safe!!!

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 12/13/2005 11:39:42 By Herb Stebbins (68)
Just a quick update on Joe. As you know he is back home now and doing well. Spoke to him earlier for about 20 minutes. He sounds like a million bucks. One of the biggest concerns the Doctors had was with his weight when he was in the hospital. Not a problem any more, he's up to 230lbs. To say the least, he's got his appetite back.
Joe made a point for me to pass on his best wishes to all of you to have a wonderful holiday season.

Dear All: First I wish each of you a blessed Christmas and I hope 2006 is the best year you have ever had. I had lunch with Joe, Lee and Mark Redwine yesterday and Joe looks great. Still a little balancing problem but he is back to the same old Joe. Has gained all his weight back and looks so good. Thanks for all your concerns this past year. I know prayers had a lot to do with his recovery. He and Lee are moving into their new home this weekend and said that was the best Christmas present they could have. I'm signing off until the 5th of January when I return back to the college. I hope Santa is good to you and I send you my love, SA

Dear All: Just to let you know, Joe's 71st birthday is May 11th. I'm sorry I didn't let you know sooner. It would be great if some of you could send him a card. It would have to almost be done today, in order for him to receive it. If any of you would like to e-mail a birthday greeting to me for him, I will print them out and send them to him along with my card. He has come a long way since the heart surgery, but still has a few problems. Happy Mother's Day to all of you that are lucky enough to
still have your Mother's. Make her feel special, and your wives also. love, sa

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 01/08/2007 01:01:17 By sylvia atwood
Dear Stag Brothers:

Joe Atwood had a setback. He was in the hospital for three weeks and just came home on Saturday. Some of the heart valves were clogging and he ended up with Pneumonia. Please get in touch with him if you have a spare minute. He does not get out of the house often and with Lee working, the days get mighty long. He is still a trouper and will not complain about his health. I talked with Lee yesterday, he was in the room, and I asked how he was doing? All she said was, he is home. She didn't want to discuss his situation with me while he was listening. I will find out more and let you know. I did talk to him, he sounded weak, but upbeat as usual. I hope each of you had a Very Merry Christmas and that 2007 will be the best year yet. I will keep you posted on any new information I find out. Bless each and every one of you for your caring ways. sa

Thanks Sylvia whats the best time to call Joe...and how are you doing with your wheels

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 01/09/2007 09:47:25 By sylvia atwood
Terry, so good to hear from you. Joe sleeps late each day, I think anything after 11:00 would be a good time to call. My wheels are still trugging along. Did you see our Gators last night in the playoffs against Ohio? What a game, we were the underdogs, but we sure came through. I have been a Gator fan since 1962 and I have never seen a better executed game. Gainesville went wild, all the streets near the University were blocked off because there were so many people. At four oclock this morning they opened them back up. The police have requested that no one be at the airport today when the team returns and will have all the roads going there to be closed until the team has landed and is back at the University. I just bet crowds will be lined up on the road going to the school. I probably will be one of them. A special tribute for the team will be held on Saturday at the basketball gym. Sorry to be gushing on the Gators, but I am still hoarse from yelling. I didn't go to bed until 2:00 and had to get up at 6:00, but it was well worth it. Give Joe a call, I know he would love to hear from you. Hope all is well in your life these days. love, sa GO GATORS

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 02/21/2007 12:26:55 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Dear All: This has to be a short memo, as I have 175 letters to get out before I leave.
Joe is not doing well at all, he has been placed in the Haven Hospice house in Chiefland. His Doctors want to put him in the hospital, but he refuses. Says if it is time to go, he will die where he is. I don't mean to upset anyone. But it doesn't look good. His body is swelling and his kidneys failed last week, but has started working again. Lee says she doesn't think he will ever come home again. I will be going to see him this afternoon, it's a little drive from Gainesville, and I will be working until 3:00 today, so will give you a report tomorrow. Remember he is as tough a man, even through sickness, as I have ever known. Please keep he and Lee in your prayers, and for Joe, I am sending all of you his love. I know he would tell you in person if he could. love to you all. sa

My sister, my wife and my mom and dad used hospice in their last moments and it was quite a peaceful experience. As I pray for Joe, I will pray for his wellbeing and peace. I'm positive all brothers will join in this effort.

Re: JOE ATWOOD, STAGS 1954, OPEN HEART SURGERYPosted at 02/22/2007 09:46:36 By sylvia jenkins atwood
Good Morning Guys: I went to see Joe last evening and was surprized to find him sitting in a chair. Lee was there,as she always is, and his daughter Jolleen. I didn't know whether he would recognize me or not but with a big ole grin he said, hey Sis. That all I needed to hear. Anyway, as I said in my post yesterday, he is a tough man. He has a lot of swelling and could not talk much, as he would give out of breath. I did not have the chance to talk with Lee alone to find out how he really is. I will try to call her tonight and will give you more information tomorrow. He did say with a big smile, when I get home we will cook some hotdogs. So who knows. I will go to see him when I can. I always get lost when out of Gainesville, so my daughter or son has to take me. This did not come with old age, I have always been this way with directions. Maybe that it why we had such a hard time on the last visit to Miami.I used to get lost in Coral Gables in the 50's. Does that tell you something? I don't think he needs much company at this time, but I don't want to tell anywone not to visit.
I will give you more news and I get it. Just remember to keep them in your prayers, that what ever God's plan is, Joe will know he is loved by so many. sa
