<* ))))>< COSTA RICA <* ))))><
OK, guy here is our next Big fishing trip. This is for you blue water boys. Lets drag some baits around and see if we can come up with some Blue, Black or Striped Marlin, Pacific Sailfish, Dorado (Dolphin), Wahoo, Tuna. That's when we are fishing the outside. If we spend some time fishing near rocks that jut out from the shoreline we may pick up a hard hitting Roosterfish, giant Snook or a huge Cubera Snapper.

Costs as close as I can come.

Airfare round trip from Miami: $275 -/+

Boat 23' with T-top and all tackle $350 full day or $200 half day.

Hotel is the Best Western Jaco Beach Resort.

Plan 1: Room with continenal breakfast $111 per room.

Plan 2: All inclusive breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks between meals, and alcoholic

beverages $97 per person per day.

Car rental (Midsize) approximately $250 per car. We can ride 4 to a car with no problem.

Dates: Leave Miami April 1st. Fishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Back to Miami April 6th.

I have 4 rooms on hold until next week. At that time I have to come up with a credit card deposit for the rooms. So, if you can do it do it NOW!!!!

Jim , like I old John S. today, I would love to go , but I'm taking April Off to travel with the wife .....How about may???? I would hate to miss a trip to Costa Rica......

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/11/2004 06:49:04 By Terrence W. Grant
Jim:

A little explaining for the old guy:

How many comfortable on a boat=3 which would make it $115 a day apiece

Assuming car rental is for the whole period

with the plan #2 how many people to a room for $97 the young guys can drink that much booze.

I guess I would get a single room and try to work out a meal plan without booze...dont they have anything like that...if they have web sight please give it to me and i can ask

we did 4 days of fishing in belize and guys said maybe one day to much!!!!! dont matter to me

are these boats like the ones in belize or with cabin/john

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/11/2004 02:46:38 By john scopetta 68
I think the trip sounds great I would love to go the only problem I have is the dates the first week in April is my girlfriends birthday and I promised to fly her to Paris and London for two weeks.
If we could move the date back or forward it would make it easier for me to get away. It would probably be cheaper also in early may or late April how does that fit with everyone else's schedule??? And is it possible???

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/11/2004 03:00:16 By Terrence W. Grant
Terry is good anytime in April and John my birthday is the 15th of April...why don't you just give me the money for two and I'll take your girlfriend to Paris

Jim what coast is the fishing on

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/11/2004 04:14:51 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Jim, spoke with my Brother today and he might be able to go .... He was telling me that when he has gone fishing in Costa Rica the best time is November to April......How about March???????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/12/2004 05:58:55 By Jim Kavney
I'll check and see if we can get reservations starting March 11th.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 12/15/2004 12:58:08 By Jim Kavney
As I expected there are no rooms available on the dates I tried, March 11 to 15th. The following week in Costa Rica is "Semana Santa" or Easter Week. The whole country take a holiday before the kids go back to school. They all go the beaches and party for a week, so it's bad timing to try for rooms. I could try earlier in March or we can maybe see if there is a cancellations for March 11/15th. dates. Let me know what you want to do.

Costa Rica Marlin!
Costa Rica Sailfish (much larger than the Atlantic sails),
It is common to release a dozen or more sailfish in one day and not unusual to release twenty!
During the Peak Season it's very possible to get a Grand Slam (3 of the 4 billfish species in one day).
Costa Rica Dorado and Huge Tuna are extremely plentiful.
During the International Sailfish Tournament in Costa Rica a few years ago, an all-time tournament record of 1,691 billfish were released by 120 anglers in 4 days.
Fishing in Costa Rica by Species
MARLIN FISHING: Marlin are generally seen year-round in Costa Rican waters.

SAILFISH FISHING: These fish can be caught here all year long. The middle of December to the end of April is very good -- February is considered the very best.
TUNA FISHING: Generally range up to 350 lbs and can be found throughout the year, but are most abundant from June through August.
DORADO FISHING: All year round -- best months are December through April.
ROOSTERFISH FISHING: Caught all year round. The use of live bait is a priority.

Fishing is reasonably good throughout the year along the Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, but action really picks up in late December when many of the operators out of northern Guanacaste move south to dodge the Papagayo winds that begin about that time.

From December to March or April many base out of Playa Carrillo which has a good anchorage and is protected from the northerly winds by Punta Guiones, but depending on fishing may also move south to Quepos for part of the time. The shelter of Guiones is also an easy run for the Nosara boats just north of the point.

Guanamar Resort Hotel maintains a fleet of boats year around at Playa Carrillo and Pacific Blue Water Adventures operates the "Kingfisher" there most of the year. Pacific Blue Water and the other temporary boats offer lodging options at Guanamar, nearby Sueño Tropical or Las Brisas del Pacifico on the beach in Samara.

Shore fishing can also be good along this area, particularly for snook at the mouths of the many rivers and for snapper and other species off the rocky points The coastline is dotted by many secluded coves and magnificent white sand beaches and the region is famous for its many exceptional surf breaks.

Where Tarpon Sometimes Spread for Acres: Fishing off Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast
by Jerry Ruhlow

Tarpon and snook are the target of most fishermen visiting Costa Rica's remote northern Caribbean coast. There was a time when most of the tarpon action in the region was in the riversand backwaters, and the 16-foot outboards could only get outside the river mouth on calm days.

Today, thanks to larger, more seaworthy boats equipped with radios and electronics, anglers frequently are able to get through the river mouths, where tarpon sometimes spread for acres and every cast can result in a strike.

Snook, particularly the big ones, are most often caught fishing from the beach around the river mouths, usually on jigs. If you're not up to wading or combating sand fleas, they are also caught trolling close to shore near the river mouths.
But those high-powered 23-foot center consoles most lodges are running these days have opened a whole new dimension to fishing in the area, with the opportunity to go outside not only for tarpon, but for blue water species that include Atlantic Sailfish, Atlantic blue marlin, wahoo, dorado, tripletail, barracuda, kingfish, cero and Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, grouper

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/25/2005 03:53:38 By Jim Kavney
Ivan, does this mean you want to go on the trip if, and when we get it together? Or did you just feel like typing? Or did you just cut and paste?

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/25/2005 04:56:46 By Ivan Lopez
Hey Lord James, Would love to go with you guys, and I wanted to give the boys 411 on Costa Rica.
From info I had. Yes indeed cut and paste since I'm not Clark Kent on the keyboard. I hope this does not annoy's anyone. I promise to stay away if this causes any problem for you. Thanks ... Ivan

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/25/2005 05:05:15 By Terrence W. Grant
Ivan...I need for you to hook me up for fishing in NIC...have a limo meet me at Managua airport..wisk me away to Tippa Toppa for lunch..then 4 days of fishing somewhere near 1) San Juan del Sur...or the other side off Bluefields...

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/25/2005 06:47:50 By Jim Kavney
Ivan, you could cut & paste a fishing website about CR. fishing every day until the end of the year without any repeats. The one I'm working on fishes the Gulf of Nicoya on into the Pacific, lot a sails. On a more serious side the last guy to call me James went away with his cojones wrapped around his neck all a neck tie. Keno does all my light work like that.

Terry, dream on old man. Nicaragua over! That is unless we go back for another run in the future. I haven't been there yet!!! One of these day.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/25/2005 07:15:24 By Terrence W. Grant
I think Ivan has a place (fishing) on the Pacific..i was just making a reservation.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/26/2005 09:58:56 By john Scopetta 68
I say lets go back to Flamingo in Feb and have a second Thrilla with the Mosqitas so that Keno and Donnelley can land their first fish we will all chip in and charter them a professional guide and a chauffeured limo to get them there safely do I hear any seconds??? How about a boys afternoon out for the supper bowl party it would be fun do I hear any seconds???
Jim lets keep Costa Rica in shore if you can to make sure there are no excuses from the Silver Studs Don and Terry.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/27/2005 06:03:42 By Terrence W. Grant
This silver stud will fish anywhere especially off shore but if we go for 4 day in CR would like a little variety...the problem with belize was we caught a large majority of our fish around the telephone pole...true we went inside outside and all around the merry go round,,,,but the fish were caught in one area.

on the super the line is NE - 7 call me to discuss

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/27/2005 06:05:25 By Terrence W. Grant
over/under 48

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/27/2005 11:42:53 By john Scopetta 68
Terry my wife tells me you are around give me a call I did not get home till late but I will meet you tomorrow for a non alcoholic drink at Montys if you are in town.
I agree with Terry on Costa Rica lets try to do both, the only problem with Belize is that we were not prepared to go off shore there has to be good fishing there we just need to hit the right spot t the correct time of year and then we don't have to hang out around the telephone pole.
Anyone doing anything for the superbowl let me know. I will take Phily + 7 hey are going to kick ass if NE did not halve the weather advantage they would have lost to Indy

Guess I had a brain fart. Thought it was the Golden Arches, but it was the Loggerhead. Now it's comong back to me. And yes, let's get a Flamingo trip going after snook season opens again.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/29/2005 09:51:42 By Terrence W. Grant
flamingo ok with me after snook opens...my march and april looks ok may bad

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/31/2005 04:54:19 By Jim Kavney
Guys, I think we should make plans for Flamingo for March or April. March can be windy and cold, April can be windy but not cold, just comfy and a high probability of no mosquitos. The hotel and cabins should be no problem to book. We need to dig up more bodies for this inexpensive close to home fishing trip. It's not fair to the other Brothers, that we have all the Stags great times, just because we get off our sorry lazy asses and make it happen. We need 15 to 20 Brothers there for the weekend to really have the best time possible.

We can head for Costa Rica or Belize later in the year, like November when the fishing is supposed to be red hot.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 01/31/2005 08:45:39 By Gaston Ruiz (68)
Jim, March is ok with me...April I will be in NC..November in Costa Rica is fine also.....John and I will be visiting Flamingo this Saturday....pictures will follow......

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/01/2005 11:19:21 By Jim Kavney
Gaston, will you and John be using a guide in Flamingo this weekend? I need to know, so I can set a side some time to work on your pictures. If your not using a guide then I won't have to set a side time for the pictures, because you won't have any fish. Just kidding, hope you guys catch a boat load full.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/01/2005 01:02:02 By Gaston Ruiz (68)
Jim, a guide is the only way to go .....it would be impossible to Captain the boat and bring in those MONSTERS , without a guide.....

Well John and Gaston, did you guys get your money's worth? Don't see any pics on the web site.Probably caught so many fish and made so many pics the film is still at the developers, right?
Don't forget, we're still planning an April outing at Flamingo. Let's commit with plenty of lead time so we can watch the weather and reserve the rooms.

Don, I wish I could show you some pictures, but never made it to Flamingo Saturday....I'm still waiting outside my house for John to pick me up.....maybe next time....

Gaston, that what happens when you try to go without your Big Brothers, you get left standing on the side of the road.

Gus, I am sorry but I did not get back from Seattle on Thursday I had to fly the red eye on Friday and in all honesty I was very tired.

On a sad issue a good life long friend George Hine from Key Biscayne and Gables lost his daughter 25 years old. Some of you, I know him well, she is the daughter of George and Beba Arellano. George attended our Stags Reunion on the first night. My heart is goes out to my lifelong friend and his family.

I received a picture today of a beautiful big Sail Fish caught by Brother Mac Miller off Guatemala You can find it on "Pictures of Today Two" link. Take a look! It's like the ones we'll be catching in Costa Rica later this year.

Jim

Steve,Jackie, brother Miller (53) is making everyone look bad....show us some pictures of your catches.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/14/2005 05:24:29 By Terrence W. Grant
Thanks for posting Mac's fish he sent me a pic and in fact thought that I should have gone on that trip as well (several months ago I looked into it)...note that he caught that on a fly rod and I dont have that talent...By the way you young guys Mac is one of us 50's guys

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/14/2005 05:49:44 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry , he may be a 50th guy , but he is not involved with you later 50th guys that think they can fish ....bring him on next time and we will give him a lesson....at least he is smart enough to hire guide....

Guides are for PUSSY!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/14/2005 06:52:57 By Terrence W. Grant
That wasn't his guide that was the mate on the boat...like all the pictures of you guys fishing out of key biscayne...Mac only fishs with fly and the trips that he takes...i cant afford...big money that only John S and Keno can handle

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/14/2005 07:30:34 By Don H
Boats with mates have captains (or guides). No doubt Mac is a master, but my ex-neighbor who was Master Angler via $15,000 and Ralph Delph from Key West.
No records for me today, but six reds, three trout and six pompano. The snook must have knew I was coming, didn't see any. Just a lazy afternoon wading the Indian River.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/14/2005 11:37:11 By john scopetta 68
Alert!!! the fishing in Flamingo is red hot, my friend went down and did the houseboat for three days and the trout were jumping in the boat. I say lets gooooo! Is time for a showdown no guides this time just knowledgeable friends allowed.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 07:05:48 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, knowledgeable in what???? if its fishing Terry and I are out....a client of mine , was out in Flamingo this past weekend and said it was great, fish were not jumping into the boat , but close to it....lets do it ....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 07:48:58 By Don H
Anytime! My old age pass will get us a small discount on the house boat. We can take our skiffs if Gaston can be trusted to drive the house boat up to Shark River.. Hope John D.has got his operating. John, do you or brother have a smaller boat? Pick a time. We will catch more than trout. Coordination, food, etc.?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 08:07:43 By Bob Injay
Let me know when your going and the Georgia Boy will show up!! Just need a little lead time.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 08:31:14 By Terrence W. Grant
How many bedrooms does a houseboat have? Will there be anyone staying in a cabin or hotel room?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 08:36:23 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Injay , glad to see you are back ...I was getting worried ...had not heard from you since last year....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 08:37:43 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don , I can cook not drive........

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 08:53:23 By Don H
The house boats sleep eight, common room as best as I recall from the info we got last time down there. About $650 for three nights, with $200 deposit at reservation and $500 security deposit. Gas is extra, two 55 gallon tanks.100 gallon fresh water tank and 120 gallon holding tank ( plus Terry's dube), stove, cooking utensils, blankets, etc. etc.
I'll send John D. an email and get him to give us all the "rules" for the boat.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/15/2005 10:52:50 By John Dannelly 1957
Don, I received your e-mail. Flamingo planned to dispose of the houseboats w/o air conditioning and replace them with new houseboats. I will call to confirm the current status and post my findings.
I have had some great times using a Flamingo houseboat as a mother boat. I have been on 4 or 5 of those outings and fished from off-shore boats and flats boats. All of the houseboats I have used had eight beds in bunk-beds in the sleeping area, a full kitchen, a small eating/sitting/drinking area, showers with enough warm water capacity for everyone to take a daily shower if everyone uses navy-type shower method.
The only solution I know of for T. is to set up his sleeping quarters in one of the boats, tie him off with several hundred feet of line. Push him off at bed time and wind him in the next morning.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/16/2005 07:53:02 By Terrence W. Grant
Wait a minute..bunk beds..the last time I was in a bunk bed was on Hibiscus Island (lower bunk) had a mirror on the ceiling...time before that was as a guest on top of the old Courthouse..

Hot water if Navy type...what the hell is this...sounds like one of these reality shows

You guys can count me out...I like it where I go fishing, have a premade lunch, come back take a hot shower or go to the pool and then have my catch served on a platter by an exotic local female...sounds like Belize or Costa Rica to me.

Being sent adrift wasn't a bad idea as the hot air created by BS and Beer Gas on board the houseboat would probably lead to an explosion as soon as Don had to light up..

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/16/2005 10:22:39 By Don H
You dud! You've never been on a troop ship, obviously. Wet down, shut the water off, lather up, rinse down and get out. Unless it's a salt water shower then you can take your time.
What I'm going to do without my first mate,The Commodore? You could rent your own house boat and bring your girl servant( that blow up model you keep in the closet).
John D., when you inquire see if the house boat has 110 volt service for charging trolling motor batteries and cameras.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/16/2005 03:45:03 By Jim Kavney
Well, Looking like the Stags fishing line is tightening up and we all are going to land in Flamingo on a houseboat. We talked about going to Flamingo in April a while back, if that still OK with everyone. Then, I would like the suggest a date and see if it fly's.

Arrival on Thursday afternoon, April 7th. in the afternoon around 2 to 3 PM, that's when the houseboats are available. Work our way up through Whitewater Bay to the Gulf which would be our fishing area. We would be out Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights return Sunday late morning to the docks.

April 3rd. begins Day Light Saving Time so we have an extra hour and on April 8th. there is a new moon. The tide should be strong which should make for excellent fishing.

If, we get a good size group we can get two houseboats and really have a ball. Purple Boat against White Boat. Come on get on board!

Sign up on this thread.

I'm in!
Jim

Houseboat update - I have not been able to talk by telephone to a knowledgable person at Flamingo Lodge Marina about their houseboats. I sent an email but have not yet received a response. I will keep trying. I do not trust the houseboat information on their website to be current as far as whether both a/c and non-a/c houseboats are available. The Flamingo Lodge website address is www.flamingolodge.com

Don, on previous trips we carried a small generator with us to charge trolling motor batteries so unless they have up-graded the house-boats probably do not have 110V outlets available.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/18/2005 06:03:31 By Don H
As I recall when Jim and I talked to them the last time we were down there we were told that they all would have a/c. I think they were replacing the fleet.
Come on guys, let's start signing up for this fun trip. We can't make reservations the night before.
Reserving the house boats is priority, other details can be handled later.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/19/2005 08:03:44 By Terrence W. Grant
Regretfully the Commodore will have to pass on this unique trip. I sincerely hope all my fishing brothers will have a great time.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/20/2005 04:10:04 By Don H
I found the info for the houseboats. The 40' catamaran rents for 2 nights $575, three nights $775, A/C, generator, sleeps six with 115 hp Honda four cycle, two bunk beds and a pull out couch.Actually should say sleeps five unless two brothers want to get cozy.
The 40' platoon houseboat, no A/C, no generator for 110 volt, sleeps 8 but no mention of pull out couch (?). Two nights $475, three nights $675. $200 advance deposit to reserve and $500 fuel/security deposit on day of departure for both. Looks to me like the A/C model would be our choice. I;ll call tomorrow to find about lead time, cancellation policy.
Who's signing up???????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/20/2005 06:41:06 By Don H
Daaaa, it's a pontoon boat!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/20/2005 09:46:30 By john scopetta 68
May I ask a question If we are not allowed to take the house boats outside of the protected waters and we have our own boats and they don't always run and sometimes we can't get them out of the water and other times they disconnect from our cars and the accommodations at the cabins are mediocre at best? WHY ON EARTH WOULD WE WANT TO RENT MORE BOATS!!!????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/21/2005 08:29:03 By John Dannelly 1957
John S., regarding your post on "why rent more boats"...

When the males in my family do things that do not qualify under the "FEMALE COMMON SENSE EVALUATION", their typical response is IT MUST BE A GUY THING!

Does renting a houseboat to function as a dock to tie other boats up to qualify as a Guy Thing?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/22/2005 10:58:22 By Jim Kavney
Why rent a houseboat?

1. All the boys can take tures running a BIG boat.

2. Once we are out to where we will be fishing, we can fish. We don't have to run back and forth every day, saving gas and time.

3. We can fish all night if we want too.

4. I don't know for sure but if might be less expensive then the cabins.

5. Togetherness = Brotherhood.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/22/2005 05:29:30 By John Dannelly 1957
I have fished Flamingo as a day trip, for several days using their cottages, and for several days using their houseboats. I have had wonderful experiences all three ways. However, hands down, the method with the highest potential for an event you will always remember is to take a houseboat trip with a group of men you care about. Good fishing is a plus. I have had some memorial trips when the fishing was in the dumps.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/22/2005 06:46:11 By Don H
FYI-respomse from Flamingo Lodge:

Mr. Humphries

With your Frequent Visitor Card you get a 20% discount on the rental of a Pontoon houseboat and a 10% discount on the rental of an Aqua Cruiser houseboat. The cancellation policy is a 30 day notice of cancellation in order to get your deposit back.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you

Jerri Kroll

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/23/2005 10:09:46 By Don H
Does anyone want to rent a houseboat for the Flamingo trip, or is this wishful thinking? Yes or no, please.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/23/2005 05:56:44 By Jim Kavney
Hey guys! Come on let go fishing. When I put the dates in on my post on 2/16. I said lets see if this will fly. Meaning if the dates aren't good for you, make some suggestions. Remember we are just in the planning stages. If, you don't tell us it just looks like no one want to go. We talked about it before and it seemed everyone was gong ho, what happened? So, let have a little help, the houseboats will be better then stay at the cabins. Lets get it together, remember we are STAGS and we make things happen. Let hear from you. NOW!

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/23/2005 07:30:03 By john scopetta 68
Yes, renting a house boat is good, Yes I am ready at any time, Yes I will go if Bobby, Steve, Gaston and I get one boat, with a big banner that reads no old folks allowed. If JD does not wear his mosquito net suit at night SCARY SIGHT!!! and if Jim leaves the SNAKES!!! at home. How do we get gas every morning??? and how far are we actually allowed to take the boats from the dock? What if we charter, can we get picked up at the house boat? Is Terry going to get a private room again? Or his own house boat? Can we leave our house boat tied at the dock? Is Keno coming??? he must get some fish.
Buuuut, I am ready as always, lets do it!!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/23/2005 07:33:04 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Jim, I'am always for it , no matter what it is we do.....I will go, whatever direction we choose..... I will be ok till the 7th of April on the 8th I leave and won't be back till the 1st week of May.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/23/2005 07:56:55 By Don H
Although the rules say not to take the houseboat in the Gulf, one is allowed to go farther than you would want to. The Wilderness Water Way goes a long, long way into the back country. If you charter, no reason your guide wouldn't pick you guys up at the floating headquarters. You'd probably be fishing up around Shark River vicinity.Check it out.
As for gas, bring your own for your own boat. The houseboat should hold enough for up and back and casual crusing.I recall it holds 55 gals. My tub holds 40 gals, which give me pretty good range. Obviously, extra gas is good.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/24/2005 01:01:30 By Terrence W. Grant
John S....as posted 2/19 due to various health problems I won't be able to make the trip..have fun

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/24/2005 04:06:55 By John Dannelly 1957
Don, I have to participate in a Boy Scout camping event April 8-10 and would not be able to participate in an April 7-10 houseboat outing. If the date changes and my schedule permits I will participate.

In case another date is practical I have sent you an email with my availability beginning several weeks before April 7 through the beginning of May.

Thanks for taking the lead in planning this outing. I know the planning and scheduling is a frustrating experience. I appreciate your efforts.

For you brothers that don't have schedule conflicts, I recommend a houseboat outing. I have been on houseboat outings where the weather was terrible and/or the fishing stunk and I still had a great time. The fellowship makes it worthwhile, decent fishing and good weather is gravy.

Florida Fishing Report for:
Flamingo - in Everglades National Park
Updated: February 24, 2005.
Florida Bay and Whitewater Bay

March to the hot fishing bite in the backwaters of the ‘Glades this spring. Fish are going to be hungry due to their pre and post spawn behavior and increased water temperatures. Although the beginning of March in south Florida is usually associated with some high winds it’s never a problem in the secluded coves and inland bays. Open bays such as Oyster and Ponce de Leon should have a reliable trout bite. If it is calm look for tarpon and increase the size of the lures. Don’t be afraid to throw 6 inch plugs! Snook fishing should continue improving all along coasts, on the flats, and in the creeks. Remember to spool up with fresh line because the biggest fish of the year commonly get “hooked” during the spring. A fifteen to twenty pound snook or a seventy pound tarpon is a likely possibility. I would suggest braided line like Power Pro or Yozuri Hybrid. Even trout can be as heavy as five or six pounds with most fish averaging around two. Redfish will gather on the bights and shallow flats. Don’t forget about Biscayne Bay because bonefish will be very active this month. If you prefer to get away from the city try bonefishing in Florida Bay where there are few crowds. The real excitement will come from tarpon this spring. In the Everglades there are always some around - the trick to these prehistoric fish is keeping the hook attached. Whether using chemically or physically sharpened hooks, make sure they are large enough and tough enough to prevent them opening during the fight. Get out and go fishing this spring it’s the best time for a slam!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/25/2005 09:23:49 By Terrence W. Grant
Don...didnt i do a SLAM last time out...tarpon, snook, red

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/26/2005 08:31:31 By Don H
Yes, you did, plus grouper. We forgot to beat our chest!!! The 60's boys didn't quite make it!!!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/26/2005 01:28:50 By Terrence W. Grant
John: re fish tank and my Tarpon...word is out that you used to swim in the fish tank Key Biscayne and spear the fish that could only swim around in a smaill area...

Now that an unnamed guy has suggested $$$$ on the table if the 60's guys dont use a guide; it even makes me sadder that i cant attend and win some easy cash.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/26/2005 06:14:41 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
read BNO thread...Terry, Don and others...

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 07:51:56 By Terrence W. Grant
Yea get fishing back on the fishing threads as I suggested last week and you guys should start up a Flamingo thread as it might create interest.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 07:57:10 By Terrence W. Grant
Hell someone even started a thread in November "Adventure without the Commodore's lessons"...the tread flopped as only one response in 5 months, you can rekindle the thread since the Commodore wont be going hence no lessons..if needed I can address the troops each evening on how to catch the right fish.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 10:27:08 By Don H.'57
Terry,
I need the number for your super secure line so you can coach the 50's to whip these 60's punks.

Re: FLAMINGO FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 10:41:32 By John Scopetta 68
Without the Commodore it will not be as much fun but it wont change the outcome of the fishing. The guide did very little except show us a few good spots. Now that we have had a total of two days in flamingo to get us aquatinted with the area we are ready to go it alone.
Gaston, Bobby and I will fallow our instincts and find more fish than with the guide. If Bischoff comes??? forget about it!!! you guys are doomed. We should all chip in and rent a guide for Keno, john and Don so they can catch some fish like the rest of us. I put in $100.00 for the guide and $100.00 for the Calcutta.

What is the date?????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 04:48:48 By Don H.'57
Looks like I'm going to do the heavy lifing for the old guys. After you guys fish for Goliath up in Shark, Big Sable Creek and Inghram Canal, and don't find any fish what are you going to do? Let see if we can set a date. I think if we have a little competition, maybe for one day, it should only be with artificials, no bait including shrimp. What do you rookies think? No guide for me. More fun exploring.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 07:10:20 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, I second it......Bobby, Steve.....Lets do it....March is all open for me........

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 02/27/2005 07:25:31 By Don H.'57
March is good for me, but doubt that the houseboat will not work out on such short notice. Considering the current weather pattern ,about two weeks from now might be good. We can reserve rooms with a 48 hr. cancellation.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 08:37:39 By john scopetta 68
Any time after this weekend is a go for me lets do it!!! sports authority is having a 40% sale it has some nice items for sale like fish sent spray, musk of snook cologne, trout jigs and deep diving wiggle worms. Be sure to load up for the competition.

Don on another note it was the live bait that saved you guys in Belize, and I recall Kavney standing on the boat with a cast net in Flamingo, everything goes, as I always say the ocean is our venue if they swim we will catch them. Terry the 60tys boys want you to come pleaaaaaseeeee!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 08:52:58 By Don H.'57
none of fish from the last Flamingo trip for the 50's were caught on live bait! Without mullet you guys would have be sucking your thumb.:-)

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 09:40:15 By Bob Injaychock
Don,
Just because you refuse to use live bait dosen't mean everyone has to be so stubborn!! Please tell us your thoughts on not using live bait and the advantages of such wise thinking. We don't want trade secrets just some insight into the fishing mine of an elder statesman!
We will use anything and everything to catch fish, John has even suggested explosives, they used them when fishing around the key back in the day!!
Let's set a date!!!
Injay

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 11:11:35 By Don H.'57
I agree, live bait produces more fun. However, all my trip to Flamingo the only thing I used is to tip a jig with shrimp. Let's make it open season including dynamite. Available dates for lodge rooms right now is March 14, 15, 16, 17, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. My preferred dates are 14,15, 16, 17. On the 31st. Gary T. and I are headed to Titusville for two days to chase those 40 pound reds.
If we fish a day and half +/- we'll need two nights. The lodge rooms don't have kitchens facilites but are a little cheaper.
How about March 16 and 17, arriving the 16th. fish the 17th ( Thursday )and 18th. (Friday). Return Friday afternoon. I'm not a fan of weekend fishing.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 04:51:49 By Terrence W. Grant
Wait a minute...i don't remember using live bait in Belize...hell I had that idiot guide for 2 days of the 4 days and he couldnt catch a cold none the less catch live bait..you guys (60's) said you used it when you went outside.

Thanks John for your request but things topsi turby in my world at the present...i'm due to have prostate surgery March 30 or sooner and Russi has her problems..

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 08:13:00 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John and Injay , don't allow these old farts to play mind games......We are it.... they can't stand it...we are ready no matter what they put in our path...... LETS DO IT.....I need a KITCHEN......Cabin for me....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/01/2005 11:41:40 By john scopetta 68
Yes, it sounds good on those days Don I will check my schedule tomorrow and confirm that as soon as possible. Terry. I say you postpone that surgery for a few days and come down with us you are an important part of this group.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 06:01:44 By Terrence W. Grant
I thimk I could arrive in the afternoon of the 14 and fish 15 & 16 leave morning of 17...just two days of fishing and hope you giys dont make fun of my bucket"do you think I givr a crap"...must be asround the time Don goes as Jim's his first mate and i'm cabin boy...

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 06:07:00 By Terrence W. Grant
my surgery set for the 30th could be moved up to 25 no earlier

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 06:11:14 By Terrence W. Grant
by the way I've been e mailing a Tallet looker from the 50's and she said her x hubsand had 27 world records on saltwater fly...also said a group of chinx incuding her and several other tallet jr went to shore of texas with some guys later and caught red fish...i guess chinks are better fisherman...what say guys...lets challenge their ass...but get mac miller on our team

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 07:24:43 By john scopetta 68
Terry, it makes me very happy to know you are going to be there, we have been fighting over your talent since before Belize when the 50tys supper pros rejected your participation on their team until you caught the big one.

Fly fishing is a very different way to fish it takes real talent and dedication to catch fish on a fly. It also takes a great deal off time is like hunting with a bow and arrow or playing golf at St. Andrews using clubs with wooden chaffs. You have to admire a true fly guy or girl.

It all pales when you see a bunch of Cubans fishing off the back of a chalupa using Yo Yo's
that my friends, is real talent!!! If you check out the Flamingo pictures from the last trip and you see the pictures of Gastone with the red gloves on bringing in the Goliath on the hand line, that my friends is an artist at work!!!! Don't you agree???

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 10:51:05 By Terrence W. Grant
when Gastonnnnn talks he is an artist...he can make BS flow so smoothly

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 05:56:10 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, I'm like that song from many years ago that said" WHY IS EVERYBODY ALWAYS PICKING ON ME " If it motivates you old "FARTS" thats ok with me. We will catch fish without bait.....We the LATE 60's BROTHERS rule..We can Charm the fish into the boat.........We are ready. Are you all????????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 06:20:52 By Jim Kavney
As Terry says the BS flows flow Sooooooooo smoothly. But, only out of the mouth of Gaston.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 07:03:13 By Don H.'57
If we want to go fishng lets' cut the BS and suggest some dates or commit to some dates. There are rooms available 3/14-3/17 ( last time I checked). These dates are good for me.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 07:22:06 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don, pick a date: who ever can make it then say so....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/02/2005 08:40:28 By Terrence W. Grant
March 14 arrival is ok with me..i tried to check availabilty on line and there is a two week block...hence no on line reservations within two weeks...i assume you called...as of right now I'm good for FISHING day of 15 & 16...i would think cabins are a better deal for some of you guys the rooms sure arent worth $100

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/03/2005 01:39:12 By Terrence W. Grant
Sorry guys but Russi got some bad news today so I will have to drop out of fishing for at least a couple of months

Terry

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/05/2005 12:28:36 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
John, we are ready .....the 50's guys are all talk ......

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/09/2005 05:00:30 By John Dannelly 1957
I talked with Don Humphries earlier today. I was not calling Don to talk about fishing. However, the subject of the proposed March 14 Flamingo outing did come up. In case you have not heard that outing has been cancelled. Is there a workable date before the rain and warm weather will make a Flamingo experience? If so, it will have to be scheduled on short notice. Monitor this thread just in case.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/10/2005 08:22:36 By John Dannelly 1957
Sorry, I intended to say
....make a Flamingo experience difficult due to the bugs.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/11/2005 06:32:20 By Terrence W. Grant
Guys..with Russi's problem and I'm having surgery on March 30 at or near my Small brain (at least the one I think with)=prostate...I will be out of commission till May

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/11/2005 09:07:53 By Don H.'57
After you get your plumbing repaired does that mean you will do away with the pee bottle. :-)
Best of luck and we'll be thinking about you.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/11/2005 01:20:20 By John Dannelly 1957
T, our thoughts and prayers will be with you on March 30 and with Russi on April 7.

Even with a very successful proceduce don't count on elminating the pee bottle when fishing. The requirement to have a pee bottle handy when fishing or camping is as much age related as it is plumbing related. I think there is also a convenience/frequency factor. An inverse relationship: the more inconvenient it is to relief yourself the more frequent the need to pee. And that factor increases to 2X when you are sleeping. Take one old man, add sleeping in a tent, add he forgot his pee bottle and you have one miserable night.

As I was writing this I smiled and then laughted out loud with the memories of my father and his pee bottle. He only needed his pee bottle when we were fishing or camping but on those outings he could not do without his bottle. Daddy had a spinal column injury that left him disabled from age 44. He never lost his love of fishing. I liked to take him fishing in a small boat; freshwater, usually in a canal. For some reason, probably not physical, he could not use his pee bottle in the boat, he had to be on land. At his signal I would find an likely spot on the canal bank, help him out, give him his bottle, and only then could we resume fishing. I remember one fishing experience on Canal L67 on the Tiamiami Trail. The fishing was terrific. Probably 6-8 bass per hour. His need for "bank relief" was usually high that day. About every 90 minutes we were taking a 15 minute PaPa John pee break. He was able to fish until he was in his 70s. He died in 1996 at age 84. I still miss him.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/11/2005 03:27:48 By Terrence W. Grant
Thanks John for your concern about Russi and I and thanks also about sharing your dad's story...my use of pee bottle has nothing to do with Mr. Johnson but my inability to stand on edge of boat. This is a physical problem with my left leg...I called the manufacture today and found out there are over 25,000,000 manufactured yearly...thats 1 in 4 male's in the US have a pee bottle...sounds like the in thing...come on Don get with the trend

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/11/2005 07:35:27 By Don H.'57
Are you talking about your pee bottle or your leg??:-)Give me enough time I'll be using a walker to get around the way my knees are going. Thanks again Kotys. Tape'em up and get back in there! No, you can't go on the field with crutches, are you crazy?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/19/2005 07:19:01 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Whats up guys????????no fishing??????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/20/2005 08:08:45 By Don H.
Early warning! Jim Kavney and I are planning a trip to Flamingo around the second week of April. Join in if you like.
Had a great day fly fishing today with Brother Gary Thomasson('63). Ten minutes from my house.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/21/2005 08:47:51 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Don, if I could get any of the (68) guys to join me ,I would love to be there....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/22/2005 07:55:53 By Don H.
Here's hoping more guys can make it. We'll have a more definate time frame after the end of the month(March).

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/27/2005 07:40:10 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Don , Jim, John , Injay, lets do it ..Don set the date we are ready ....the Flamingo Champions from the class of (68) are ready to give you old farts another chance...I know we are the underdogs but lets get it on.... is john D. and Keno comming ??????HA HA.... if they do , we will give you guys a break......Keno is 0-2 in the USA and in Belize .....only thing he has won is a departure basket at the Airport...... the world traveler needs to catch a fish....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 06:46:12 By Terrence W. Grant
In my career as an Expert/Judge I must bring the true facts forward if I see an error in testimony on this site. Gastonnnnn last message states the "class of 68" comprising of John, Injay, Gastonnnnnnnn are the champs. Stag's website information list Injay's class date as 1969. Hence an error of 33% and trying to claim a championship with a ringer is a violation of boasting rights on Flamingo fishing as well as with Steve in Belize...I know I need to get a life

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 07:57:59 By John scopetta 68
Terry, we are the sixties group and we have tried not to offend you guys but the truth hurts and you know down deep we are the better fishermen. You are a lucky fisherman but not a great one and Don is a great one but not lucky and Jim knows how to catch fish and keeps you guys competitive. Bobby Steve Gaston and I are a team. A fine well oiled fishing machine.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 08:11:03 By Injay
Terry,
A learned scholar as you knows by now you can't believe anything you read, only half of what you see and nothing on TV!! We all graduated in 68, the site is incorrect as are most things on the internet except the facts of our continued fishing soga!!
Let's go fishing!!!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 10:40:09 By Don H.
Don't get too full of yourselves youngsters. Let's see what pictures Gary T. and I post from this coming weekend.Just hope we don't get caught in a hurricane and have red faces!!!
We're waiting on Jim to recover from his surgical procedure scheduled for the 30th. to set a date.Looks like the second week in April if all goes well.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 07:09:09 By Jim Kavney
OK guys lets get ready to get ready. On Wed. the 30th. I'm having a cataract remove and a lens put in which should correct my vision in my right eye to 20/25. Now it's somewhere around 20/3,000,000. So, I'll have an eye like a teenager, my fishing ability should also increase like my eyesight. So, beware 60's boys the old pro going to be back in his game. Gaston, stop picking on Keno at least he won the basket and I got to drink the beer.
Bye the way I'm have the surgery done by Brother Ed Lores '63. I know he'll do a great job. I agree you 60's boys out fished us the last trip in Flamingo but not by much. But, you do have the bragging right no matter how Brother Terry tries to cook the books. Injay, your internet bios are now correct as least as far as this website is concerned. We'll be fishing soon.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 07:50:28 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
I love it when we can get you old farts of the couch and in a fighting mode ......Jim I hope it all works for you....maybe you should have the rest of the 50's gang go to your eye doctor ,so they too can see that the fish we 60's guys catch are always BIGGER .....Don , good luck fishing with your buddy , BUT THEY ARE STILL MUD FISH......lets get it on.......

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 10:01:58 By Don H.
Gaston,
Why don't you buy some waders and join me in the Indian River dodging the Bull Sharks while we fish for reds and snook. Just remember, don't pull the fish stringer too close behind you or you might get a hello from an unwanted visitor.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/28/2005 11:11:33 By John scopetta 68
Hey Don, I will be out of town on the fourteenth to the seventeenth if you could choose another weekend I would really appreciate it so I can make the trip.
Gus when they go wading in Indian River you should see the size of the flies they catch, real monsters. It lends a meaning to the name fly fishing. And don't be scared by those baby bull sharks they don't bite.
Now I realize why Jim keeps saying the fish they caught are the same as ours he never has actually seen hour fish.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 08:04:08 By Terrence W. Grant
By reading the inserts for the past few days; I guess it is better to be lucky especially on one trip you catch a World Record and on the next trip you catch a Florida Slam (snook, red & tarpon)besides that supplying most of the meat for the group to eat. If I remember correctly the 50's supplied the fish for the first night in Flamingo and the 60's guys took off early the second night and left with their booty. As to a 60's Well Oiled Machine...what type of oil you using...K-Y Gel

Jim good luck tomorrow...I'm going under the knife as well...some say it's brain surgery for me

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 08:31:14 By John scopetta 68
All kidding aside good luck on your respective surgeries is always a trying experience having to put yourself in the hands of another specially when they have a knife or a laser in their hand.
The slam Terry describes points to the fact that he is very lucky when it comes to fishing. I don't remember a Red in that slam I think it was a grouper. If you take a close look at the size of those fish you would think they were caught in fish tank not in the wild, mosquito infested waters of Flamingo.
Now in the next round coming we are going it alone no guides so our true skill will shine as Gaston and I use our trusty hand lines to land some real fish not the baby Goliath Terry claims as his world record in Belize.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 08:49:44 By Don H.
John, Usually just poke them in the nose wuth the rod and off they go.However, they all aren't babies. I encounter one on the flats about 6-7 ft. which scared the s... out of me. Plus we've stopped lipping the snook at night since a Bull took a snook right behind the gills.
We'll try to accomodate everyone's schedule for the Flamingo trip.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 10:46:26 By Jim Kavney
Terry, please refresh my memory, but on the last trip to Flamingo I don't remember a red coming into our boat?
Good luck with your brain surgery!

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 02:26:04 By Terrence W. Grant
Posted on first fishing site "includes lessons by Terry on 11/08/04 at 7 23.11pm reference to Grand Slam...Don confirmed the catches...the red was small and not a keeper.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/29/2005 09:49:33 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Terry, we are a well oiled machine , from the 60's no Jelly......Jim, good luck on your surgery....you are in good hands ...pretty smart guy you are .....Ed Lores (63). you chose to have a 60's guy take care of you....Terry , good luck to you......Don, BIG BAD SHARK IS GOING TO BITE YOU.....John S. would jump in and scare the sharks away....we are the 60's guys...

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/30/2005 09:54:04 By Don H.
I'm lost for words other than :],:],:]. Without a guide it would be worth it just following you guys around to watch the show. Catching those little grouper on a fifty pound hand line is analogous to dragging a dead ballyhoo around all day.
Now that Jim will be able to see beyond two feet that's going to tip the scales.I had my peepers fixed about a month ago. You pups are in big trouble now the blind is not leading the blind and we don't have depend on the Commodore to tie our knots. Also, after the Commodore gets his plumbing fixed he should be in rare form. Are you guys sure you still want to go and face the competition?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/30/2005 09:33:07 By Jim Kavney
OK, T I remember you catching the slam on our first trip to Flamingo. When we had no competition. I thought you were talking about the last trip. I should have his honor would have his facts straight.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 03/31/2005 06:57:50 By John scopetta 68
We still don't have a set date and time is running out soon the squiters will be in full force and we will be faced with the sight of Donolley in his net suit to avoid being carried away by those little black monsters from down under.
We will not be chartering this time so the real battle will be wagged in the muddy waters of Flamingo. This should confirm the theory that fishing is all luck as evidenced again and again by Terrey's catches and Don's lack there off.
Gaston and I will bring our humble teammates Bobby and Steve and show the 50tys gang how to catch a few fish!!!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/01/2005 03:54:44 By Don H.
Just returned from Titusville. We only caught 25 reds, the biggest 21 lbs. 7 oz. No real big ones this time. All on 8# test. Sorry guys, forgot the camera so Stags Honor.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/01/2005 11:54:23 By John scopetta 68
Great catch Don!!! you must have had Terry's lessons before you went. I want you to know that I don't believe Terry is any better a fishermen than you or me. By the way has anyone heard about his surgery was it not on the 30th of the month???

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/02/2005 08:54:47 By Don H.
Yes, Terry plumbing job was scheduled for the 30th.Going to call him today to check. The Commodore has taught me everything I know about fishing. Somehow he has developed that great wrist action.:-)

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/02/2005 11:38:50 By Terrence W. Grant
The Commodore is recouperating and wont really know the outcome of surgery till 4/5 when catherer is removed from bladder....i've never said that i was a great fisherman,,,in fact I'm not even a good one. Don's right the only thing I have going is the soft touch to set that hook on the proper fish....in 6 days of fishing with you guys...no cats, lady fish. I've offered lessons as part of a site but i guess you cant teach a soft touch...sorry for all the spelling errors but i'm still on "juice" and also graduate of Gables High

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/02/2005 03:41:14 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Terry, hope it all works out for you....what do you think of Don's claim to all those recent catches??????????? don't see it happend when we are fishing together......the biggest thing he has caught in the water that I can remember , was Kavney when he fell over the side of the boat in the last trip to Flamingo....hope you feel better soon.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/02/2005 04:15:10 By Injay
Terry,
Glad to hear from the Commodore and that all is well. You'll really need that soft touch until you get the cath out!!
Hope all is going well and you return to full capacity is short order. We await your return to the fishing group and your continued knowledge and leadership.
Injay

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/02/2005 05:07:57 By Terrence W. Grant
Thanks guys...i'm going thru a rough time "not physically" and being on this helps me...speaking of Jim falling overboard...I dont know if you realize how lucky he was to hold onto the boat as he was hooked ...and blood hadnt yet spilled into the water...he could have been severly injured by the hook, prop or sharks. Jim as well as all of us were blessed at that moment.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/06/2005 05:00:32 By Don H.
I don't think you guys know how tough Jim is. He's been in much more severe situations than falling overboard, and he has always come out OK. As a matter of fact he saved me one day when we were snorkeling for bugs and stone crabs. And I mean, really saved me. That when we were brothers before we were brothers.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/08/2005 10:09:38 By Don H.
Are we going to fish or cut bait????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/09/2005 08:22:27 By Terrence W. Grant
Guys the commodore failed on my test 4/5 and they had to reinsert the cath...then i had to take Russi to Tampa for cancer surgery just like Deans...she OK...i'm going back Monday to try again on my situation by the way it hurts like hell when they YANK that cath out....see memories of the 50's thread for a few more details

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/15/2005 02:38:22 By Don H.

The number to call for reservations is 1-239-695-3101.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/15/2005 05:27:38 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Don, you 50's guys are a pretty smart bunch, you set up the trip to Flamingo knowing that I can't make it .....I guess the "FEAR" of me using my "YOYO" was to much for you all to handle.....maybe next time ....have a good trip.....

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/16/2005 08:26:05 By Terrence W. Grant
Gastonnn...my YoYo giving me alot of problems. I wish I could go fishing with the guys but with medical condition unable..also too weak to bring in my normal catch..if you guys get a cabin dont let John D buy the grocery's...also remind him not to place his cell phone, glasses, watch etc in his top pocket and then lean over board to check to see why the engine hasnt started...he might lose them again...good luck and you can always ship me some excess Snook

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/16/2005 11:05:53 By Don H.
Gaston, sorry you can't make it, but we had to do something to get that YoYo out of the competition<:-)
Commodore, get your YoYo fixed and join us next time.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/29/2005 04:04:07 By Jim Kavney
Fishing report from Flamingo Trip 4/27&28/05.

Only three of us made the trip: John Dannelly, Don Humphires and Jim Kavney. We were hoping for six of us to fish, but that did not work out. Here what we caught more or less:
1 Ladyfish
1 Jewfish
4 grouper
1 snapper
1 jack
1 bluerunner
12 trout
Not much for three expert fisherman, fishing two days, but we had a great time and all got home safe and sound.
Next trip we are going in houseboats for two or three days. No dates yet, but we are looking for around the end of the year. Make plans to join us.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/30/2005 00:18:23 By John Dannelly 1957
Stags houseboat request:
Lord, please don't let the wind blow, keep the rain from falling, let everyone limit out, provide us with at least one brother that can really cook, and don't allow anyone to whine or be a pain in the ass. Thank you.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/30/2005 08:11:07 By Ann Observer
Flamingo Fisherman ??????

Surprised you didn't list catfish...noted missing was the Commadore...perhaps you guys should have taken a refresher course from him to hone your skills. where were the guys from the 60's? Can females go on the house boat outing?

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/30/2005 09:35:31 By B. Ann Observer
They would be lucky to catch a cold without the 60s guys.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 04/30/2005 10:23:38 By Don H.
The 60s guys couldn't find their a-- in the dark without a guide at Flamingo. Jim didn't mention the several big grouper/jew fish that cut us off on the mangrove roots.
Don't see why the girls couldn't join us for the houseboat trip if they get their own houseboat. Sure that Gaston would be more than willing to drive it up to Shark River if the ladies weren't comfortable doing so themselves.
If everyone is serious, can't wait until the very end to amke reservations. We've been talking about November which is peak season due to the great weather. There's a one month cancellation policy so it would be my guess that we need to make reservations about August, or maybe earlier.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/01/2005 10:47:26 By John scopetta 68
Sounds to me like you guys had a great time caught as many fish as you usually do sorry we bombed out at the last minute unfortunately we still have to work and things happen beyond our control. The next one we will not miss.

Lets try and make it a place that we can all enjoy a little fishing a little night life and so on. Sorry we missed it would've been great. By the way did Don catch anything worthwhile or is his record intact??? Don't tell me Jim got all the fish again???

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/02/2005 08:54:34 By Don H.
I caught no fish, all John and Jim. Oh, I did catch some finger mullet and a cold from being wet all the time throwing the cast net.Let's hope we all can make it next time. We had a lot of laughs, and of couse stories about the "old days".
John gave us several lessons about buzzard recognition and their feeding habits. We can share our notes with you guys if interested.
John had a snake in his room which of course Jim managed to wrestle to submission and then release.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/03/2005 10:29:54 By John Dannelly 1957
Regarding the snake in my room...
I discovered the snake when I got up at 5:30 to talk to a man about a dog. I found the tightly coiled snake in the bathroom. My room and the room occupied by Jim and Don shared a connecting door. After taking a wizz I got back in bed and lay there dazed and shaking for almost thirty minutes. Promptly at 6, the previously arranged get up time, I quitely slipped through the connecting door to Jim's room. I alerted Jim to the snake in my bathroom. I suspected the snake was an anaconda. Jim leaped from the bed, still not fully alert, and charged into my bathroom. Through the crack between the door and the door-jam I watched Jim carefully observe the snake for about 20 seconds. Then, like a human mongoose, Jim pounced on the snake. There was a terrific struggle which I could not see because my view was mostly blocked by the door. However, I could tell by the sound of legs and body being slammed around that Jim had his hands full. Jim emerged from the bathroom in total control. Jim released the snake after displaying the snake to Don and I and identifing the species. Jim said the snake was common but one sub-species of this snake on Big Pine Key is protected because it is considered endangered.

Except for the P.S., that is the end of my story and I am stickin' to it.
.
.
.
.
P.S. The anaconda turned out to be a ring-neck snake. About the diameter and length of a small soda straw with a delicate yellow-orange ring around its neck. When coiled, the snake was about the diameter of a quarter.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/03/2005 12:46:23 By Terrence W. Grant
John:

Probably the first notice of the snakes size (anaconda) was in direct relation to the cheapness of your booze...upgrade and it lessens the DT's affect

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/03/2005 03:40:17 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Terry, it was a "worm".......very simular to the anaconda, specially after a few drinks......

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/03/2005 09:27:22 By Terrence W. Grant
i can relate to that

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/04/2005 08:22:36 By Don H.
Don't let the wild outdoors scare you guys off!

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/04/2005 08:07:48 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Do we have pictures of the bait fish , you guys got?????

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/05/2005 11:29:42 By Jim Kavney
Gaston, we took some pictures, but they look to much like the other already on the site. Besides we didn't want to take away any of credit of you handlineing in the 3 pound Jewfish with a half inch rope.

Jim

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/05/2005 11:32:08 By John Dannelly 1957
Don took a few "just caught this fish" photos with his digital camera. They will probably eventually make their way to the website.

Jim forgot to include his unusual catch, a Spanish Mackerel. Unusual in that the fish was caught in a river, a location you would not normally expect a Spanish to wander into.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/05/2005 03:41:20 By Don H.
Not worth posting unless you guys want them.

Re: COSTA RICA FISHINGPosted at 05/05/2005 04:55:38 By Jim Kavney
John, I'm glad you reminded of the Spanish Mackerel.
