Folks:

Several of you know of my problems but they are insigificant to those of my very close personal friend Dick Wassenberg. Dick was a St. Thersa guy who was a great friend of Stags. You will find him in many of the pictures of TDT Alumni party's of the 50's era. Scrapper Smith coached him to be the best boxer the U of Miami has ever had. Dick has acute leukemia and I talked to him yesterday at the hsopital via his wife Louise (McCharty) cell phone and he has a wonderful positive attitude. He can't have visitors nor flowers due to his immune system...Guys/girls take my word for it Dick is a saint and I hope each and everyone of you say a prayer for my friend. Without question he is the nicest guy I've ever met.

Terry

Note from Mike O'Brien's wife Flo, forwarded by Kay Whiteside Spitzer.

Hi,

Mike had knee replacement surgery this morning, and the physicians are extremely pleased with the procedure. With the "block" and the morphine pump, he has been a happy camper all afternoon. We will wait and see what the morning brings!!!!!!!!

Of course, our biggest concern with him, as always, is infection. Our infectious disease physician, whom we happened to have had an appointment with yesterday, arranged to have vancomycin, our trusty antibiotic for his ever present hospital visitors, MRSA and staph, administered during surgery. Hopefully, this will alleviate any concerns for a recurrence along those lines.

So...we feel confident that all he has ahead is a normal recovery and therapy time. WOW! All is well in the O'Brien household.

Love to all of you,

Flo

This is an e-mail I received about the condition of Brother: Don DeVane, 1964 (Stags President)

Hello All,

I'm not sure if I'm overstepping my boundaries here but I know, as friends of Don & Irene's, you would want an update on his condition. As many of you know, I've worked for Donald for 20 years now and he is like a second father to me. The decline of his health over the past few years has been a struggle to see but the past 4 months it seems to have really declined at a rapid pace.

Don has had some temporary, but brief, relief from a new medication, given in shot form. It's a fairly new drug that is supposed to work to combine and make all of his meds work at optimum efficiency....it can give up to 3 hours relief at a time. If working properly, he could administer the shot up to 5 times per day. So far Don has been on the shots 3 days and it does provide some relief from the tremors but it doesn't appear to be working for more than 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Don has an appointment with the Mayo Clinic on August 31st to determine whether or not he is a candidate for the brain surgery for Parkinson's patients. My hopes and prayers are that this is the answer that will provide some years of normalcy for Don.

I've had a lot of people ask what they can do and to tell you the truth, it's just so helpful for Don and Irene to know that you care and are thinking about them, as you can imagine, they feel very alone. They aren't always available by telephone because he has to rest throughout the day, but I know that it would mean so much for you to drop them a card and let them know you are thinking about them. Their home address is 532 Holt Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789. Irene has become his caregiver 24/7 and it's really taking it's toll. She's not able to rest through the night, as he wakes her up all night asking for back rubs or just because he gets a little panicky. I'm working with local friends to try to make sure people are delivering meals and just offering to sit with Donald so that she can get out and have a little break but I'm open to suggestions and ideas from you guys as well.

If you need to reach me, please call my cell phone at 407-832-2534. If you need any clarification, you can e-mail me at nbarry.vrsrealty@earthlink.net.

Thanks for your kindness,

NiCole Barry

Some of you know Jeff - he was in Stags 4 years after I was. He had a very bad car accident as a passenger on the way to a tradeshow from Atlanta to Florida last February (He lives in Snellville GA - ended up with a Broken hip, shoulder)... lucky to be alive - and was fully recovered as best possible till now.

Last week he learned (and called me) from one of the examining physicians that he has a terminal cancer (This obviously was a huge surprise. - prostate related).

He is in Snellville at his home awaiting treatment regimen etc and I thought I would post this for anyone who wants to contact him to cheer him up at JMYERO@YAHOO.COM

There is no prognosis regarding the time they say he supposedly has left. Just for info, my sister who was 4 years older than me died of cancer in 1968 when she was 24 just before I went to Vietnam. My Mom just died of cancer last year - the good news is my Mom lived with her cancer for 30 years.

My Mom lived with Jeff for several years before she died last year and hopefully the strength my Mom had for those many years will show through in Jeff ... he will fight a long and gallant struggle.

Love,
Brother Tim Yero

Yesterday Herb drove up to Lake Suzy with a 9 pound prime rib and mashed potatoes and ceasar salad with special dressing by Lu and we took it over to Brother Ernie Knighton and wife Jackie. Ernie still fighting cancer. In a surprise preplanned move I got 5 of his Brothers/Sister on the line....Ken West, Harry McCabe, Paul Murphy, Kraut and Ricky Acker for some good ole BS about the old days. Billy Adams called while we were eating and added his two cents (as always)Just kidding Billy!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all enjoyed the meal and fellowship. Ernie had a smile on his face which made Herb and my day.

For those of you who have not heard and those that have...here is an update....I'm leaving in the morning for Baltimore to visit Chief of Urology at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Tuesday. I have visited Mark Soloway Chief at U of Miami/Jackson who said he couldn;t fix my bladder as the muscle has just been used up due to the vast consumption of fluids. With the prostate cancer it is an aggressive type Gleason 8 and something has to be done shortly....For you younger guys and those not yet affected by prostate cancer the hardest part is deceiding which treatement to take. It's making a decision of two evils...downsides to all treatments.

Put me in your prayers as I want to be around a long time so that I can continue to bust ass.

Dear Terry:
You have been in my prayers since I first heard of your ilness.Did you get my earlier e-mail, concerning the cancer center here at Shands Hospital? It is one of the best in the U.S. and we have Dr's from all over the world. The building is only a year old and is devoted to only cancer patients, and is an enormous facility. I know you have done much searching and have chosen the best plan for you but still give this some consideration. I am thankful you have Dawn beside you, as she will be with you the entire time with her love and caring and that means so much. I have the faith that you will conquer this just as you conquered the drinking problem and really came out a winner. You are a strong individual and cancer is not a death sentence any more. I have a niece going through something very similar and she is coming along very well. Know that I love you and so do all the people on this site, and we will be pulling for your recovery. I am a long way from you, but my home is always open for you and Dawn. If there is anything I can do, please let me know. You are on the prayer list at my Church and we Baptist have a direct line to the big man.
God loves you and will be with you all the way.
sa

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 12/03/2007 12:15:23 By sylvia atwood
Terry:
Just a short after thought. If by any chance you decide to think about coming to Shands, You could have my condo and I would go and stay with one of my children. You have seen it, nothing glamorous, but it is home and is comfortable. It would be yours as long as you needed. sa

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 12/06/2007 03:24:10 By Terrence W. Grant
Everyone:

As I was reading the posts on this site concerning whats going on with me tears came to my eyes with the outpouring of love. Yes, Superman does cry.

What's going on...and I want the younger brothers to take heed and learn from my lessons. As mentioned about two weeks ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Mind you I've been told by several urologist including Mayo Clinic etc over the years that everything is OK. My PSA was always in the 2 area then it went directly to 11 and then 12 then 15. Had a biopsy ( had a biopsy in 2005 but it wasnt extensive= no cancer)) and it was a Gleason 8 (very aggressive)...Dawn and I did extensive research pro's and con's of radiation or surgery. Visited with Mark Soloway Chief at U of Miami Medical...he said take action quickly...I just got back from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and the Chief of Urology said my case was a no brainer...the prostate has to come out now and the cancer has spread to the nerves even though CT scan and Bone scan says no as they dont show the microscopic little tentacles that he could see in the slides. I'm going back to Baltimore on the 19th and surgery on 21st. This next week all my time will be spent with local doctors doing pre op type things stress tests. There are alot of fancy treatments out there but my doctor thought it best to take it out. Guys if your PSA goes from a 1 to a 2 that is a 100% increase...if you have any questions just ask

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 12/07/2007 09:45:58 By sylvia atwood
Terry: I am so sorry I missed your call yesterday. Please give us an address where we can write to you while you are in Baltimore. love you, sa

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 12/07/2007 02:51:22 By Tim Yero
Terry:
Your advice is excellent advice to anyone. My brother Jeff (Stags 70) was clear and skipped a year of test. Later last year he had a count of over 1000 (Yes, over 1000!)... since then he has had every therapy available for stage 4 and is holding steady in to 300's. Although his count fluctuates and the therapies used run out of their helpfulness from time to time, having decreased by 2/3 from what they started with is a good result. A count in the 300's is obviously bad news but he is holding his own and in good spirits.

We all have a long way to go and lets keep it that way!

Tim TDT65

25 days ago, I was notified I had cancer, but didn't even have a competent doctor. Within those 25 days, I was able to have surgery by one of the top surgeons in the world, who specifically requested a 30 year veteran to be the anesthesiologist. After leaving recovery and getting to my room, my spirits were lifted when I saw the beautiful boquet of purple & white flowers. I would like to thank each adn every one of you for your prayers. As most of you know, I live life one step at a time, and so far, the steps have been good. Guys, keep on top of your PSA numbers and make sure you have a good doctor.

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 02/28/2008 12:59:20 By Jim Kavney
Sad news about Brother Don DeVane 1964.

Some of you may not have been aware that Don's condition has worsened to the point that he sometimes needs help with basic day-to-day activities. He has taken quite a few tumbles out of the bed at night and it is very hard for Irene to get him back up once he's down. Because of this situation, Don will be moving into an Assisted Living Facility tomorrow. For future reference, I'm referring to it as "The Oaks" or "Don's Clubhouse"

His new address will be:

Alabama Oaks,1759 Alabama Drive, Winter Park, FL 32789

I don't know what his direct phone # will be but the main number of the place is 407-622-5076.

You can look up the place online: www.alabamaoaks.com

We spent a lot of time looking at places and I have to say, this one was certainly the best. It looks like a bed and breakfast and I really liked the people that work there. Don is able to have visitors any time.....you can just pop in, no appointments are ever needed. Now, THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN REALLY HELP: As you can imagine, Don is bummed that he's going to be "fenced in" and can't leave without someone signing him out. It's really important that everyone take turns popping over and signing him out for dinner, lunch or even just a walk around the neighborhood. It's a very beautiful setting and neighborhood, so even a walk around the block would be of great help. There is a large front porch in front of the place and Don can hang out there with his buddies all he wants.

It is also important that you remember to drop him a card or letter as often as possible.

I know that this e-mail list is just the tip of the iceberg so I need your help getting the word out about this....please review the addresses above and pass it along to anyone that I've missed.

I'll have more updates shortly and I know that Bob Morris is putting something together also....I just wanted to get this word out so you can start planning your trips to visit him.

I know I don't have to tell you that if the roles were reversed, you know that Don would be the first person visiting you at the new place.

As always, thanks for your love and friendship to Don.....it means the world to him.

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 02/28/2008 07:50:11 By Gaston Ruiz(1968)
Who is the "DON" ???????, for you all that did not know the "DON"...... If you were to look up in he websters dictionary, the words BROTHER ,FRIEND, you would find DON'S picture next to it.....Don was and is what we wished we could be our in life....He was the one that made our hood special, someone who always was positive about everything and anything......he gave several dozen of us BROTHERS the want to be a part of STAGS....a very good friend to my Brother Gonzalo and cousin Joe as we arrived in this country back in 1959.....he was a BIG part of the mid 60's brothers and a major part of the class of 68 class .....I remember the boxing days in the back yard of his house ...I'm sure that there is so many memoral times thanks to him , that it would take me forever to write what he means to us all, even if you never had the opportunity to have met him, you wished you had....His wife Irene and I go back to the Jr High days and she too will tell you what a great man he is ....Don, I wish you well and thank you for being a part of our lives and my life .....Stags love to you and your family......

Thanks Gaston ! I echo your sentiments. He is a GREAT STAG and a wonderful human being. He does not do computers, as he told me. So cards and letters would be WONDERFUL. If you can get to the Orlando area, go see him. It would mean a bunch, I am sure.

I was just contacted that Jim Kavney is in South Miami Hospital. I spoke to Jim and he sounds good. I gather that the procedure he is having done is not life threatening.
If you want to contact Jim you can call his phone number at home and this will transfer to his Cell. Anne has his Cell. Also if that should not work you can call South Miami Hospital at 786-662-4000. He is in Surgical ICU number 7.
If you are planning to go by the hospital it might be better to call first.

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 03/04/2008 03:18:17 By Terrence W. Grant
the correct location at the hospital is CCU #7 but I think going thru Ann is the best. Jim is having something similar to an angiogram, but it recreates the fast heart beating that occurred over 150 beats per minute.

Terry

I just talked to Jim (dont call yet as groggy) the tests were unable to determine the problem as the area was in the back of the heart...he will go on meds for the correction...dont take this as fact as I said he was groggy talking to me.

I'm home got there around 3:30 Friday afternoon. I want to Thank You'll for the well wishes and the calls. I when for a routine stress test Monday in Miami, I did very good on the test, after the test; they inject the dye and put me under the camera. I had about a minute to go when the tech got concerned and call the doctor over to look at the monitor. The doctor called another doctor to take a look. I'm wondering what the hell they're looking at? Well, my heart rate was up to 169 bets per minute. They were a little concerned, but I didn't feel a thing, nothing was wrong as far as I was concerned. Next thing I know I was in a wheelchair heading across the street to the emergence room.. To make a long story short, I had an electrical problem with my heart. They stabilized me a Jackson South and the next day they took me the South Miami Hospital. They did a catheterization but because the problem was in the back of my heart they couldn't cure it by scaring it. The fact that I have open heart surgery 10 years ago closed that option, so it med's and I should be OK. Quit an experience, remember if your heart starts racing get it check out quick. It could save your life.

Thanks again!! !!!

Jim

The power of positive thoughts is the key to your successful battle - and I know you are very powerful in this regard.

Being strong has always been your strength and I know you will persist. Have fun and go about your life with the gusto you have always pursued and you will be just fine - I have no doubt your illness will have little chance of doing anything other than getting in your planned ways and pissing you off / keep it up and think positive.
Love Tim TDT65

Friend:
No one picks on Gaston or any other Stags Brother.
Our 'discussions' on this web site are purely gab that we all understand as Brotherly love... Gaston and every other Stag knows we are all beside them 100% in good and bad times. What we know about any Brother is only what they choose to share, otherwise, it is not any of our business. We respect and would not question anyones desire for privacy.

There comes a time when I really don't want to post on this particular site. If one were look at my posts on Memories of the 50's...most of those times were spent with my brother and friend Ernie Knighton. As those who read this site know Ernie has been suffering with prostate cancer returning after several years of being OK and having it removed approx 10 years ago. Ernie called me last Monday to tell me Hospice was coming to see him on Tuesday. I went over to see him on Wednesday and Hospice was there doing their job of making him feel comfortable.

Ernie would like to hear from the brotherhood

His phone number is 941 697 7720 you can look on this site for his address it's spelled Marsh not March

On behalf of my wife a special thanks to
Herb and Lucy Stebbins, Billy and Vicky Adams,
Terry and Dawn Grant, Timmy Yero, Pat Sullivan.

~ FRIENDS ~

As we walk our path of life,
We meet people everyday.
Most are simply met by chance.
But, some are sent our way.

These become special friends
Whose bond we can't explain;
The ones who understand us
And share our joy and pain.

Their love contains no boundaries.
So, even we are apart.
Their presence enhances us
With a warmth felt in the heart.

This love becomes a passageway,
When even the miles disappear.
And so, these friends, God sends our way,
Remain forever near.

This I dedicate to all the above mentioned.

Always Zaida R. Lopez

Dear All: Today is Terry Grant's 70 birthday and he will be spending it at John Hopkins, trying to decide what the next step will be. Send him a Happy Birthday e-mail.

Billy, I wish you well with your surgery today. This time next week you will feel much better. I need to make a decision to have my knees (both) replaced, so you will be my informer of the procedure. Good Luck, and both of you special guys will be in my prayers. Love to all. sa

Just spoke to Billy...he's doing OK with the knee but has a fever. Was sipping on some beef broth (without vodka which would have been a bullshot if you added a little Worcestershire sauce). Already using his knee and the way he sounds ready for the Doozie

This is to let everyone know that Ivan's wife, Zaida - lost her Father this week. Zaida has recently been in the hospital for some serious procedures herself, and this loss has hit her very hard - she was very close to her Father.

The funeral was in California and Ivan and his family will be returning back home from the funeral later tonight.

Should any of you wish to express your condolences to Zaida and Ivan... his address/phone and email is listed on the Stags Brothers thread.

We all express our deepest sympathy to the Lopez Family in this time of loss.

God Bless

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 05/30/2008 08:01:35 By Terrence W. Grant

Re: SICK CALL.Posted at 05/30/2008 08:24:26 By Tim Yero
Gaston:
I did not know your son had the operation but I am glad he will be o.k.

He told me at the BBQ how you used to make him try and lift 25' trees when he was 4... without a forklift.. he said you used to say "lift that tree boy! Bleed purple! Be a Stag like your Pops,,, when I was 4 I could lift one in each hand!"...

Now he paid the price, and I seriously hope you learned your lesson and he can now use the forklift!

I myself have recently almost had several hernias from laughing at Jeronimo posts on the golf thread...

God Bless,
Love Tim TDT65

SICK CALL.Posted at 09/09/2008 01:54:16 By Tim Yero
My brother Jeff is 5 years younger than me and is not doing so well in Snellville. He has been battling recovering from a major car accident he had in 2006 and also terminal prostate cancer discovered right after the accident.

Recently he has incurred a lot of complications and problems that go along with such a fight and has turned for the worse over the last couple of months and weeks and now days.

It would be a very nice gesture if anyone who can find the time to do so, to drop him a get well thought in the mail - he no longer uses the Internet much and can't talk much either on the phone in his current condition. I know it would do him well to hear some thoughts (and prayers) from anyone he knew or would have liked to know - that is any Stags Brother.

His address is: Jeff Yero
3351 Cottonwood Lane
Snellville, GA 30078

He was a Stag only for one year and was forced to drop out because of his poor grades in High school at that time (he turned that around and graduated the Atlanta Art College with a BA in Art later on - and became fairly successful in the art designing of advertising for a major agency in Atlanta).. so our Mom's edict worked pretty well.

He just became a grandfather for the second time, with the birth of his new grandaughter this year (Cora Elyse) born of his daughter, Pamela who is a school teacher.

Jeff also has a son who graduated High School last year as the #1 Roller Hockey High school player in Georgia.... (Michael) just started at the University of Georgia this month on a partial Engineering scholarship (So he is real smart too !)

Jeff has always been and still remains proud of the fact that he followed his brother (That would be me) into the Stags Club and had many close friends in and out of the club.

For those of you who may or may not know him, he is an avid fisherman and fished the many lakes around Snellville Georgia, where he has lived since High School with his wife, Linda.

Please take a moment if you would, and drop a line to a brother in dire need of your support, Jeff Yero Stags 1970. I am positive it will cheer him up - his time is sadly and unfortunately growing ever short each day.

Thanks and Love to All, Tim TDT65
