Nick was coaching us one day in 1970 as we were practicing punt returns John Kelsey and Chopsey Kean ran into each other on the reverse accidentally.Nick in his usual fashion screamed "Cripes Almighty" and went to throw his white hat with a red G at thr top to the ground.Only the bill came off. he didnt notice. He contiued to coach & scream not knowing that he looked like a monk.We tried not to laugh as he walked away with a grin on his face.It was quite a sight.

COACH I REMEMBER I PLAYED IN 1969.THERE WAS A GUY NAMED ANDY WINTERS HE WAS OUR THIRD STRING BACK.HE GOT HIM A SCHLARSHIP TO TAMPA UNIVERSITY.IT NO LONGER EXIST.
I HAD A BROTHER MIKE AJHAR WHO WAS ON THE FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.THEY HAD GUYS LIKE JACK LAMB,TOM RENADO, PHIL MCKEE,BOBBY JACKSON,ANDLARRY RENTZ.IN 1964

A memorial celebration will be held at the Gables High Auditorium at 6:30 pm. August 4,2005. Anyone who would like to tell Nick stories is welcome. Athletics Director Harold Cole is editing a video of Nicks era.

I DO REMEMBER ONE TIME MAKING FUN OF THE CHEERLEADERS. IT WAS ME, TERRY EVERS AND I BELIEVE JOE SHEPPARD OR JOHN GIBSON. WE WERE CUTTING CLASS TO WATCH THEM PRACTICE WHERE WE HELD THE PEP RALLIES.

COACH KOTYS WAS COMING OUT OF THE BAND ROOM AND SAW US MAKING FUN AND TRYING TO DO THE SAME MOVES THEY WERE DOING.

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT HE HAD US DANCING IN FRONT OF THE GIRLS.

COACH MADE US DO THAT FOR 10-15 MINUTES, AFTER WHICH HE TOOK US TO HIS OFFICE AND GAVE US A LONG SPEECH ABOUT MAKING FUN OF OTHER PEOPLE.

I DID NOT PLAY FOOTBALL BECAUSE I HAD POLIO AS A CHILD, BUT I CAN IMAGINE HOW HE DEALT WITH THE PLAYERS. HE WAS NOT ONLY THE FOOTBALL COACH BUT A MENTOR, FRIEND AND COUNSELOR TO ALL THE STUDENTS OF CORAL GABLES HIGH SCHOOL.

I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM NOT ONLY AS A COACH BUT A MAN YOU COULD SIT DOWN WITH AND TALK ABOUT ANYTHING.

HE WILL BE TRULY MISSED BY ALL THAT KNEW HIM AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND WHO PLAYED FOR HIM.

HE GAINED OUR TRUST AND MOST OF ALL TAUGHT US ABOUT RESPECT.

ALL THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, STUDENTS, STAFF AND MEMBERS OF OTHER CLUBS INCLUDING STAGS MEMBERS OWE COACH KOTYS ALOT FOR ALLOWING HIM TO COME INTO OUR LIVES. WE ARE WHERE WE ARE TODAY BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE HIM.

HE WILL ALWAYS BE A LEGEND. MAY GOD BLESS HIM.

in my lifetime, nick kotys had more influence on me and thousands of other boys, than anyone in our lives, except in most case our fathers.

he took us through hell, we loved and hated him in the same breath....................and i for one will never forget him. a few years ago i watched the movie rudy.........afterwhich i wrote him a very long letter telling him how much i appreciatd him, and how i would never forget him.........i started the letter telling him what position i played and the year ............and that i didn't expect that he would remember me but that was not important............what was important was that thousands of boys became men under his watch and they will always remember what the words on the locker room wall...............quiters never win..and winners never quit..............i sent him a birthday card most years (i wish i had never missed a year)and was honored to get a telephone call from him at the office one day................the voice was the same however by then the mind had faded.......pat sullivan

Sully, this is John Scopetta I played with you on the 67 team and yes I forgot to put up my hands when rushing Pytel in that famous Columbus game, well famous for them just a killer for us, bloody Saturday fallowed. We lost to Columbus and Palmetto, who was the third loss Miami Springs??? I cant remember.

Din't you think we should have been even better that seven and three that year??? Looking at it position by position we should have been great. We had Bailey, Montgomery, Tezanos, Spooner, Norlan Peace, Clemens and the super juniors Merlano, O'malley, Rivero, Johnstone, Burger. Don't forget Curry and Taylor. What do you think??? By the way is good to know you are on the site and great words about a great man.

Does anyone remember the threaten of a 'walk-out' in Spring Training pre season of 1965 "world champion Cavaliers"? It was almost implemented!
(I know Gonzalo, Jose Herrera etc will remember)

I used to do only Spring Training in football in prep for being in shape for Baseball (and Gymnastics).

All the clubs were threatened (told to disband by the Principal/Norton - illegal etc...) I remember our very own Richard Bishop (President of Stags and captain of the defense and future King of the entire populated world), standing up in a team meeting after practice and saying something like the entire team was going to quit... you could have heard a pin drop (several gas reliefs were audible at this instant as well)

That was the one and only time I saw Kotys really look concerned and was somewhat tongue tied - he could usually handle any controversy.

By going to bat for our plight - Nick Kotys saved Stags, every other frat, and the football team at that point. The disband order was squashed by Nick Kotys and the team obviously played their butts off for him in return (Going 29-0 and undefeated in 1965).

Can you imagine the memories that would not exist had Stags broken apart at that time?
Thanks to Richard for having the guts (and cahones) to stand up and say what he did...
and to Nick Kotys for saving Stags and our childhood! We shall never forget...

I was not there but I heard about a state-wide attempt to allow only service clubs at high schools i.e. no fraternities or sororities. This would have been around 1952-1953. That is the period when Tau Delta Tau Fraternity became Stags Club by getting the South Miami Elks to sponsor Stags. I was told that Nick Kotys and the Athletic Department was considering strict enforcement of the state's intent. Coach Kotys was advised that almost every man on the varsity teams was a fraternity member and the majority of the starting teams were members of
the strongest fraternity (Tau Delta Tau-Stags Club). His attitute changed, and he said something similar to "my boys are good boys, they are not gang members". When the Athletic Department and the Administration realized fraternities and sororities were so important at CGHS they would force their students to make a decision that had a "no-win" conclusion, enforcement of the "service clubs only" policy disappeared.
