All were illegally in America at one time or another but have since embraced our culture to a major extent and only one voted democrat. In response to your "land of big winds" comment... We used to call "The Season" the time of the year when the big spenders arrived during the winter. Now "The Season" starts in June and ends in November.

My section of the county must be very different than where you guys live. I listed all the different people I do business with and stopped when the list was 27 pages long with 675 names. 1 from England, 1 from New Zealand, and 673 were born in the USA with families that have been here since at least 1775. Except for the bald ones they all have blond hair and blue eyes.

Btitish music producer has come up with a Spanish language version of the US National Anthem---holy crap! Can you imagine the French coming up with an English version of their national anthem, or anyone else for that matter???

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 04/30/2006 06:51:09 By John Dannelly 1957
I agree with Don. A Spanish language version of the Star Spangled Banner is a terrible idea. An idea that never should have resulted in a Spanish language with altered lyrics intended for public performances. I have not heard the Spanish language version but I have read the altered lyrics. In Miami-Dade county, where more than 50% of the population is Hispanic, the vast majority of the residents seem to agree that a foreign language version of any country's national anthem is inappropriate. Why? Because it is disrespectful.

Those who support the decision to have the Spanish language version of the U.S. national anthem receive a lot of media attention and receive considerable play time on radio, believe they are expressing support of the U.S. I think it is going to have just the opposite impact.

The only appropriate justification for translation of a national anthem to another language is for those that do not speak the native language to understand the lyrics. A foreign language version of any country's national anthem should never be translated with altered lyrics and polished in a manner intended for a public performance. (A foreign language transalation that is intended for a public performance will not be a literal translation because the words will not rhyme and the music may not "fit" the words. The foreign language version will require the same music with altered lyrics. Changing the words is disrespectful.)

I disagree with President Bush often, perhaps more than I agree with him. But I feel the President got this one right when he said something similar to ....U. S. residents should learn to speak English and know how to sing the national anthem in English.

I love this site....I have been away for a few weeks and I come back and this thread got really interesting.....John D, and Don H. I agree with you 100 % on the Star Spangled Banner... (Don't touch it out of respect).... but in the year 2006 we tend to loose respect for many thing and people try to change things right or wrong...the pledge of alligence was taken to court to remove " under God" that was the first thing I learned when I got to this country and I use to look forward every morning to say it at David Fairchild Elementary......J.B. don't know you but its not "LEARN IT Or LEAVE IT", its LOVE IT ....learning English is not required to become a Legal Immigrant today, but it was when I became one....Blame the politicians that we elect for not enforcing it...not the new Immigrant trying to become one . When relating to History , Culture or government you think United States of America ' but you have North and South America which consist of people from the Western Hemisphere.. Native Americans can only be Indians ... What Kind of Indians ???? if we consider Western Hemisphere we have lots of different kinds of Indians that were inhabitants that would fall into the category under "NATIVE"...Immigrant,A person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another, to enter settle in a country or region , in which one is not native of....We all were a product of an Immigrant at one time in our families past ... thats what makes this Country the Best place to live.... don't blame those that are trying to better their lives , in the land of opportunity... Blame those politicians that allow this to happen....

I was e-mailed the following last week. Quite an eye opener. does fin in well here.
K

A Frightening Analysis

We all know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context
his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an
immigration-overpopulation conference in Washington, DC, filled to
capacity by many of American's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor named Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia," explaining how
immigration — both legal and illegal — was destroying the entire state
of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed
all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave
a stunning speech on how to destroy America. The audience sat spellbound as
he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States. He said,
"If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich,
then let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has
survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great
civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show
that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said: First to destroy America, "Turn
America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows
that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more
competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be
bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The
historical scholar Seymour Lipset put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and
bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil,
tension, and tragedy. Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Lebanon all face crises of
national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence.
Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France
faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America, "Invent 'multiculturalism' and
encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. I would make it an article
of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural
differences. I would make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout
rates are due to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other
explanation is out of bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States a 'Hispanic Quebec' without much
effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin
Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: 'The apparent success of our own
multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved! Not by
tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated
ethnocentrically and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and
pluralism to hold us together.'"

Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language
and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl
metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural
subgroups living in America reinforcing their differences rather than as Americans,
emphasizing their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least
educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated,
and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a
50% dropout rate from high school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and
business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic
identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all
minorities to think their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I
would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority
population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship and
promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would
stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are
mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they are not killing each
other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical
precedent. People undervalue the unity! Unity is what it takes to keep a nation
together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they
belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language and literature; and they
worshiped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic Games.

A common enemy Persia threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were
not strong enough to over come two factors: local patriotism and geographical
conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell.

"E. Pluribus Unum" — From many, one. In that historical reality, if we
put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of the 'Unum,' we can balkanize
America as surely as Kosovo."

"Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits ~ make it taboo to
talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word
similar to 'heretic' in the "Next - that stopped discussion and paralyzed
thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'x! xenophobes' halt discussion and debate."
"Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established
multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of
'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would
develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it
must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and
ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound
silence followed. Finally he said, "Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson
Davis's book Mexifornia. His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy
America. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that
book."

There was no applause.

A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at
the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm
enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively
across the United States today. Every discussion is being suppressed,
are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national
cohesiveness. Barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation
are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World
as corporations create a Third World in America — take note of California
and other states — to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It
is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story, three slogans
are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: "War is peace," "Freedom is
slavery," and "Ignorance is strength."

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the
conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy are
deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration monster
stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy
everything in its path, especially The American Dream.

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/06/2006 08:33:24 By Tim Yero
America was very "multi-lingual" when it was dicovered. English, Indian, probably a Viking or two or... whatever.

Shortly after, America was basically an open door haven to all those that wanted to leave their own country for whatever reason.

Shortly thereafter, someone said you must speak English to get along here and evryone attempted to learn so the could get along with everyone else (And sell stuff or work for them).

Since then we have gone back and forth on policies, strengthened and identified who can come in and who can't and have waivered back and forth in many cases...

Our Southern borders are being blitzed by those who have no life, no work, no education - not much of anything. So what?

Well, to start with - are we rich enough (cumulatively and indivdually) to keep funding the plight of these neighbors turned residence?
I think we have a lot to figure out and a lot to do.

The bottom-line as I think we have a lot to do at home for ourselves before we start taking care of Mexicans...
What do you think?

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/06/2006 11:36:21 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Tim, your last paragraph says it all. Nice to see you posting again. I have not spoken to Jeff in a while. When you speak to him please tell him I said Hello.

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/06/2006 03:06:54 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Tim,good to see you back on the site....my question is to who ever wants to answer it...But since you brought it up..are we for or against Immigrants as a whole or just Mexicans ????? I have either been reading or listening to the wrong newspaper articles or the news on the television?????

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/06/2006 11:28:03 By Don H.
In my mind it's illegals that are the issue and Mexico is main source. Those following the rules are certainly welcomed. And how dare these people try to black mail this country as they have been doing lately, and claiming their rights under our constitution. There are many terrible stories resulting from illegals who don't speak the language, don't have drivers licences, no insurance, etc., etc. It cost this country $64 billion ( that's with a "B") a year to support these people thru health care, schools, food stamps, trama to other and on and on. Maybe we could claim them as dependents. In addition, $16 billion a year in American dollars is sent back to Mexico thru American banks from those working here illegally. No taxes paid, none of it back into our economy.
And if the illegals are made citizens through some type of amnesty program who will do the work that some say the Americans won't do. Because then they will be Americans, and Americans won't do that type of work. :-) Sounds like a catch 22.
By the way my wife is a naturalized citizen and it took over five years to become a citizen once she made application.

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/07/2006 09:03:01 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Don, thank you for your imput....you are so right ....But, this thread is about immigrants , not illegals, there is a difference... I was an immigrant ,just as 50 plus BROTHERS registered on this site...We went thru the same legal process as your wife did and very PROUD to be a US Citizen.....about the jobs and who will do them????they will be done by the next batch of Immigrants that follow them....its a catch 22 for sure....about the monies going back to their love ones ????? Put the institutions that make it easy for them to send those Billions of dollars, out of business....its a catch 22 again, it will never happen.....they who write the laws and complain about it are the same people which allows them that opportunity....so whats the solution ?????does anyone know???? Immigration is not bad , we all Immigrated from some other place.. Illegals, ammnesty is not the answer only a bigger problem... I for one totally against it.

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/09/2006 09:39:50 By John Scopetta 68
The American dream is alive today and will continue to be there for many generations to come. Education, opportunity and freedom is the backbone of that dream. don't fear Immigration no one is attempting to convert California in to another Mexico, Hell they are leaving their country to get their children educated and get a decent living for themselves and provide some income to their love ones back home. There is nothing wrong with that.

Look around New York City, go to Little Italy and sit at an Italian restaurant and almost everyone is speaking Italian. Go to Chinatown in San Francisco and try to read a menu is mostly in Chinese. Come to Miami and Go to Versalles on 8 Th. Street and English is hard to find. Don't lock the doors of this great country and not allow for those that are chasing a dream to come here and make those dreams come true.

Controlled Immigration YES!!! We need time to absorb the Immigrants and make sure the bad ones don't come in but take a good look at the kids fighting in Iraq they are there doing a Job, they are as racially diversified as they can be and they will there as long as those running this country ask them to. The nest migration may be Iraqis. You never know.

Be proud love this country is the best there is!!! Don't be fooled by the constant barrage of negative mumbo jumbo we hear from the politicians and the media. Love God your neighbors and your family and go forward to build a better nation. This country has done it right for a long time and we will continue to do it right for a long time to come. No one is going to destroy it???

Gaston: I am a true Gator, worked with the football team in the recruiting area on Saturdays before football game, helping with visiting Coaches and players, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Miami, especially Coral Gables. I had many wonderful years there and made many life long friends. Anyway, I am so glad I have introduced you to the true south. Everyone here at my office says, it takes me 15 minutes just to say, Good Morning, with my slow southern drawl, but at least I get it out. Now have you ever had fried green tomatoes? It's a must if you are to be a true patriot of the south. Also with our eggs and grits and biscuits for breakfast we serve sliced tomatoes. I hope you and your bride were able to order in our Georgia restuarants without being noticed. Did you remember to ask for lemon with your sweet tea? And I hope you just ordered tea, assuming they would know you wanted sweet. I am proud to have you Cubans as my friends. My ancestors came from England and Ireland, we all came from some where different, but all came together as one big American family. I feel blessed to call you friend, and I am going to surprise all of you on one of your boys night out to meet each of you personally. Remember your Mother this Sunday if you are blessed to still have her, and make your wife know she is the best you could have ever hoped for. I love all you guys. sa

Sylvia Atwood, I'm suprised at you. Such a good Southern cook and you left out the most important food group in your post to Gaston ///FAT.
You left out Sausage Gravy!
There's probably nothing worse for your body but dam it taste good. I'm sure you can get good sausage gravy in the South but if you go to the deep south, Port St. Lucie you can get the best.
I wish I could think of the name of the place but it's a Hot Dog joint. Just the thought of it makes my arterys contract.

Re: IMMIGRANTSPosted at 05/12/2006 03:15:43 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Gaston, I just remembered the name of the place. It's called the "Dog House". They not only make the rue with sausage drippings but they add a ton of cracked pepper to the floor. To top it off they add a large portion of smoked sausage. The finishing punch is the addition of whole cream.
To get there, if your coming off the turnpike go east on Port St. Lucie Blvd for about 2 miles and it's on the north side of the street. It's a must next time you are up there.
John, when and where is this reunion? If I'm in town I will be there. I'm normally in Miami on Tuesday or Wednesday. I forgot what you guys look like. Hope we can put something together soon.
I saw the last Barrett/Jackson Auction in Scottsdale. Some of the GT 500's were going for over $375,000.00. The GT 350R's are going for over a million (private sales). That's not bad if you bought it new for 6-7 grand. I guess you could call this a bubble. The bubble will burst when Carroll Shelby passes on. Remember what happened when Enzo Ferrari passed?

Gonzalo, regarding your inquiry as to "who is an immigrant"?

I don't know what the legal defination of immigrant is, but to me an immigrant to America is someone born in another country that immigrated to the USA. A child of that individual that was born in the U.S. is not an immigrant.

For example - My wife's family has been in the U.S. for six generations but only the first generation were immigrants. Those immigrants arrived in Key West in the 1860s from the Bahamas, Spain and Cuba.

John, that is correct an immigrant is someone that has traveled to another country and established permanent residency there. Therefore it would only apply to they first individuals of each family that actually arrived from another country and established the initial foothold in the new country. I do believe that every individual born in the USA has the same rights under the constitution and is considered just as much an American as those that have been here for 200 years.

Gonzalo:

Good to see you back on line. I'd like to put my 2cents in into the immigrant thing.
I feel that one remains an immigrant until one has fully assimilated into the culture of the country to which you have immigrated to. In lots of respects, most of us have assimilated to the US culture, and in lots of respects we have not, so as for myself I'll be an immigrant for the rest of my days.
Now; as for the children of those immigrants that have been born in the country their parents immigrated to, in our case the US, as Jhon S. says, they should no longer be considered immigrants, unless the parent of the child has taken the time to enrich their minds, that they should be proud of their heritage. Case in point; my son born in the good old USA, son of a Cuban immigrant and third generation New York Irish (immigrat family too) with out hesitation if asked, will tell you that he's Cuban, something that people find very hard to belive, but true.
So in closing, if when people refer to me as an immigrant, and they want to picture me with a grass blower strapped to my back, that is ignorance, and the best antidote for ignorance is kindness.

THE END

Manny , my friend , my brother....why choose a blower to discribe an immigrant????????? can we try a different one?????? in my field of work, the aide of a blower on my back, was good enough for me to the tune of more than $ 10 million a year in sales...........lets try veggie picking next time......

Manuel don't go bragging because you cheated and chose to jump start your sons genes by marrying up in to the old established immigrants. It is immediately obvious that you are not a true Irishmen and you might be able to stay with Teddy Kennedy shot for shot but you would stand out like a sore thumb asking directions in downtown Boston. Let's hit the Links old boy!!!

Immigrant status - I should have mentioned that it is not necessary to be born in the U.S. to be an American citizen with full rights. A child of U.S. citizens is a U.S. citizen regardless of whether the child is born in the U.S. or in another country.

For example: My wife's grandmother traveled from Key West to Havana for the birth of my wife's mother. My mother-in-law was born in Havana and had dual citizenship, Cuba and the U.S. Cuba because she was born in Cuba and the U.S. because her parents were U.S. citizens.

John D, what you say sounds good ,but always not true....My Mother was born in the USA, but my brothers , sister and myself were not automatically USA citizens....we had to apply pass the real test back then, not like nowadays....My mother had dual citizenship also , not us.....

I like the golf subject better than the immigrant one but ust read Gonzalo's question - and think he deserves an answer.

Mr. Ruiz, you are a true American. A highly successful leader admired by all those who have associated with you your entire life.

You have never been considered an 'immigrant' in my mind nor anyone I know that knows you.. although the madrass pants are a true sign of a mized emotional problem and could push the subject to new levels!

I think today's term of 'immigrant' shares little in the relationship to your current personal existence. Today's immigrant problem is what we must do to protect our safety and freedom; not to identify some easy way to dump a bunch of illegals.

Freedom is something every soldier that ever died for America sacrificed his or her life for. It has been brought to our attention by the 9-11-01 attack that we are not what we thought we were.

Today's immigration problem is not just economic considerations but one of security. Heightening our ability to control those who enter, and to insure they are not the next 9-11 copy cat is a main issue non-existent in your past.

No solution will be without side effects. I'd prefer whatever solution places the majority of side effects on the immigrants - not American citizens.

I happened to be the main coordinator of emergency communications for Southern Bell during the Mariel Boatlift in the early 80's. I remember what I felt and we are now seeing both good and bad, having come from that major world event.
I can assure you, I don't know how they would be different today but if something like that happened today, it would not happen as it did then.

Good Bless America and God Bless my Cuban Born American Stags Brother Mr. Gonzalo Ruiz, my Brother Gaston and their families.
