All this is explained on the homepage of this website. FYI if you had friends that were in Counts, you can also post on their site. There is a link to it that can be found on this website. I'm not sure if non-members can post on the Ching Tang website or not?

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/23/2006 09:28:55 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Louie Louie trivia: The FBI subpoenaed all the Kingsmen and Richard Berry. They confiscated the master tapes and master recording. They interviewed all of the members of the band and the author seperately to determine the actual words to the song. They played the recording at different speeds and determined that there were no obsenities.
All I can say is, they weren't listing to the same 45 I bought.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/24/2006 09:48:41 By Janet Eaton Sherr
John,
You like the blonde bombshells!

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/24/2006 06:00:28 By John Scopetta 68
Blonds for sure, I don't know about bombshells but I guess you are correct.

Elvis, just to see what it would feel like to sing and look like him for one day. It would be when he was making all the movies and recording those great songs. not when he was young and poor, or doing all the drugs.

like I said you like those girly men like johnny depp. Janet weren't you and George with us at the Jim Morrison arrest concert?

Question, why the ex husband I assume he no longer with us?

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/26/2006 03:14:17 By Janet Eaton Sherr
John,
My current husband is not a girlie man John, the bombshell lover!!!! But you are right, i like the sensitive type, the type that knows what a woman wants and how to give it to her, can listen and knows something other than the preverbial f job! Kidding aside, YES I was with you and George when Jim Morrison got kicked out and arrested. It was a great night, makes me famous with my children (gained a little respect "Mom, you rocked. you weren't a nerd!")
My first husband, because I would have liked to say good bye and tell him how much he meant to me at one time in my life.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/26/2006 11:19:10 By John Scopetta 68
I know you are married to a hunk! I don't mean to keep using the term Girly is just that those were the guys girls loved most in junior high and high school so all the tough, not so pretty guys were always jealous of them. Ask Herb he is sensitive and rugged at the same time.

I remember the night at the Doors concert they kept starting songs and Morrison was so wasted he could hardly sing at all looking back it was sad to see and we started booing, yes, we booed Jim Morrison at the Dinner Key auditorium. He got so pissed he wiped out his thing and the cops rushed the stage.

I agree with Herb on BonJovi song Its My Life I got to se them last year sitting in row eight at the office depot center and the were great but 67 that was the year Sgnt. Pepper came out and that album was probably the best of all time. Janet did you go with George and me to see Hendrix at gulf stream park/

Ivan, how old are you brother buddy Holly's peggy sue was in john, Terry and Jim's era.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/27/2006 08:15:56 By Janet Eaton Sherr
yes John we were together at gulf stream park for jimi hendrix. another awesome time. I'm surprised we both remember that night as we were both pretty "enhanced" ourselves. we had some great times during that time in our life. I agree that Herb is the rugged sensitive type. Herb is a special guy. At the reunion he commented on how nice my perfume was. Not many guys do that sincerely without having an ulterior motive attached.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/27/2006 10:12:49 By John Scopetta 68
I know between the drive to Cocoa Beach and the parties it seams like it was a lifetime condensed in it two years for me. For the times they were a changing it was great to have lived them.

Herb, he did have ulterior motives you guys underestimate Herb he is a real lady's men, Gaston and I are blah blah he is the real player. Ask any flight attendant when you board a United flight and they will tell you about captain Stebbins. They all say he rivals captain Stubbings from the love boat.

Janet, Jimmy Hendrix a legend in his youth, did you ever go to the world or the place in north Miami when that sweet soul music was playing Wilson Picket, Sam and Dave, Otis that was incredible at the Place they had Go Go dancers in cages up in the air, and at the world they had a piano that flipped over while the guy was playing. Does anyone remember?

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/28/2006 03:50:06 By Jerry Carpenter
Was this the same Gulfstream event that included Steppenwolf, Procol Harem, Richie Havens, PG&E, Sweetwater, 3 Dog Night? Great time, I think. There were a bunch of us there and no casualties. Also, there was a place in N. Mia or the Beach wher we saw Th Almond Joys open for the Mothers of Invention.......

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/28/2006 07:45:01 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Janet , like John said about Herb ....The quiet guy ...Don't forget how women fall in love with those great looking guys in UNIFORMS.....

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/28/2006 11:04:53 By John Scopetta 68
Jerry I think you are correct there were others playing how on earth do you recall all those bands I think it was an all day event and it was nice and cool. Those bands were some of the great names, sounds like a mini Woodstock. I remember seeing three dog night and the Almond Brothers Band at the Jiali fronton in Miami. Also the Who in Miami beach but that was a couple of years out of high school. Grand funk at dinner key. did anyone see the Beatles in 64. I have seen the rolling stones every tour since 1978. Also the E street band with the boss every time he has toured. I got to see Page and Plant the rebirth of LZ and they sounded great better than in the seventies.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 09:43:41 By Larry Silver
I remember watching a series of bands, including Janis Joplin, somewhere in South Florida, with Bill Holloway. There was a giant rolled what looked like a cigarette being passed through out the crowd. Everyone was lying on blankets during the day. There was a group a few blankets in front of us and one of the kids had a huge head of bushy hair. A german sheppard suddenly walked up and apparently thought that it was some kind of bush or plant and lifted his leg and pissed on this poor guys hair. Unfortunately, although everyone around him saw it happening, he did not realize it and the dog completed his act and just trotted off. I also remember that as we left, the stage seemed to have grown much larger.
Old Bill and I had a great time that day.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 03:24:31 By Herb Stebbins(68)
John and Gaston, if only it were true, but at least you give me something to fantasize about. Thanks anyway and thanks Janet.
On the topic of concerts, Tommy Ott, Mike Booth and I had the pleasure of attending the last "Cream" concert in the US in 1967. It was at the Miami Stadium. We sat right upfront and unfortunately were not, as Janet said, "enhanced" but had a great time. Tommy Ott, as you know was a very accomplished drummer. His style duplicated that of Ginger Baker, the drummer of the "Cream".
That concert sticks in my mind even today. They did all of their songs but "Crossroads", "White Room" and "Sunshine of your love" really stand out. Ginger Baker did a 20 minute solo at the end of "Sunshine of your love". I still wonder where he got all that energy from?........A bunch of coffee I bet.
The following year they played there last concert in Royal Albert Hall. I have the CD. They were in their early 20's then.
37 years later they reunited for a 3-4 day concert appearance again at Royal Albert Hall.
They had not played together in 37 years and only practiced for about a week and a half and the results blew me away. Keeping in mind that they are in their 60's now...Clapton-62...Jack Bruce-64...Ginger Baker-68. (You can download these songs or videos on AOL with no charge. If your a "Cream" fan, it's well worth it.)
They are a much better band today then they were 37 years ago.
Before Tommy Ott passed on, I had the pleasure to attend a Jam put on by his band. They did all the songs by "Cream". I say without exageration, that Tom was right up there with Ginger Baker. He just didn't have the confidence to take him to the next level. He never believed he was as good as he was.
John, Bon Jovi's "Its my Life" is great isn't it. The words capture a certain spirit.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 03:59:00 By Jerry Carpenter
Steve Aguilar and I and others went to a Cream concert in Atlanta at Chastain Park. Its an outdoor natural ampitheater. We paid for the afternoon concert and sat right up close. The music was so intense that it almost didn't make sense. Later, that night, we sat on the hillside for free and I'm telling you, that whole half the state of Georgia had to be able to hear them. I'm sure it rivaled the one Herb spoke of. The best I've ever heard ! It musta been the coffee 'cause Ginger looked 50+ back in '67.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 06:23:26 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Herb, I was always impressed by Tommy's playing , I used to kid him all the time at the way he kept the beat with his mouth...if you remember Tommy always seamed he was chewing something, you could see the muscle on his jaws move like when you chew gum...I remember when he got his Blue and White station wagon ( ford fairlane ???) and how proud he was of his drum set.....Herb , do you remember the band "the Thing" he put on IGGY doll on his foot drum and as he hit it the hair on the toy would move....going to his house in the living room on 47st and practicing with Sam Vizzini, Kris Kimel Victor Tracy and I and Jeff Lathan thinking he was the next Mick Jagger.....Tommy should have persued his drumming further in life ...he had a special god given talent.....

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 06:25:11 By Tim Yero
Thanx for the update John.
I played many times at the Place, The World, The Image and The PAL hall, and recorded some of my first music at the Dukoof studio in the back of the "Place"...

I came up thru the 'bands' in South Florida and many guys I knew then still play (Most of the "Geezers" who now play at Hoolehans on Dixie are guys I played with in my childhood. Their drummer (Gregg Shaw) was in my very first group at Kinlock Jr High (The "Yellow Jackets") and he went on to be the drummer for the "Shaggs" and the "Kollection" who were very popular at the Place and The "World" back then. Their singer went on to be in a recording group also popular in those days - The "Birdwatchers".

I met a lot of music people then (The Who, Vanilla Fudge - (At that time The Pigeons)and Mike Pinera (The Blues Image - "Ride Captain Ride") Mike was formerly in The Iron Butterfly "Ina Godda Davita", and still lives in Deerfield Beach. I also worked with KC (The Sunshine Group) who was from Hialeah and the assistant engineer in the Dukoff Studio at the time.

I also hung around a bit with Rod Stewart and some other cut-ups back then and enjoyed every moment of it...until I went to win the war in Nam!

I missed the Doors concert because I was in Vietnam then. Morrison was actually from Melbourne FL (A military brat) and I never met him. But the guys in the Fudge were buds of mine and played with the Doors on tour - as well as the Zeplin... Those 'early' days are long gone and were extremely radical; but that is what forged the music we remember and still try and duplicate; never happen!

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/29/2006 07:22:50 By Gaston Ruiz ( 1968)
Tim , did you play with the Brothers ....Randy Hall , Dale Cutlip and Mickelson????????

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 00:17:40 By John Scopetta 68
Herb, you know is true, shed sensitive image and let your true colors shine through. You are the Terry Grant of our 68 class those Superman shorts will someday be passed to you with a great deal of pride and admiration from all the brothers to fallow.

Gaston what instrument did you play ??? this is new to me that you were in a band.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 08:03:20 By Herb Stebbins(68)
John, those shorts were a gift to Terry from all of his Stag Brothers. Gaston and I just had the pleasure of handing over the goods and being able to watch him model them first hand. Talk about laughing my ass off!
Some how a pair of shorts just doesn't seem to be adequate to honor such greatness. I think we should poll our thoughts and financial resourses and find something that is a little more perminent that will stand the test of time. There in lies the next challenge......where would we erect it.
John, Gaston was in a band and a good one too. I think he was the singer and played the guitar along with Kris Kimel.
Kris told me a cute story about Victor Tracy, who was the Bass guitar player. Evidently Victor wasn't very good so when they were doing a gig Kris would go over and disconnect Victor from the amplifier. Victor never knew.
Gaston, I sure do remember the first drum set Tommy bought and where it sat for so many years. It makes me smile inside when I think of Tommy playing those drums in the house when his parents were home. Mr. Ott was almost totally deaf, so it didn't bother him much but it use to drive Mrs. Ott up the wall. She would wear ear plugs and smile a lot.
Gaston, that car Tommy drove was a blue and white 1958 Ford Ranch Wagon. (Ford's answerer to the Chevy Nomad) Boy I would kill to have that car today.
As kids we would take that car along with David Saunder's 56 Chevy and drag race in reverse down by the YMCA next to David Farchild Elementary School. What a HOOT that was.
Before Tommy passed away, he was in a Christian band in Ft. Myers. At his funeral they had his Drum set on the stage as a tribute.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 09:37:40 By Herb Stebbins(68)
John S., I didn't know that you were a fan of Elvis Presley. If I mentioned this before I'm sorry but anyway, here it goes again. Back in 1973 I was flying for a charter outfit out of Opa-Locka Airport. I took a family from there up to Memphis for the day. I knew Elvis's pilot so I made arrangement to see him while I was there. He came out to the airport to show me both of Elvis's airplanes. One was a Lockheed JetStar and the other was a Convair 880. The Convair looks a lot like a small B-707.
I didn't have time to see the JetStar inside but I did get to go through the Convair. I've flown some pretty nice corporate Jets but nothing like this. It was configured with 4 state rooms. One for partying, one for recording, one for eating and last but not least was the bedroom. The gold in that airplane was worth more then the airplane itself. In the bedroom the beds had seat belts with gold buckles with "Elvis" on them.
My friend had to come to the airport anyway to preflight the airplane for a trip later with Elvis and the "Memphis Mofia" (his closest friends). If I could of stayed a bit longer I could have met Elvis but I had to head back to Florida.
The airplanes had names. The JetStar was "Hound Dog Two" and the Convair was "Lisa Marie" named after his little girl.
I missed his last concert in Miami in 1977. From what I hear he didn't look that good or preform that well. Such a shame.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 09:45:45 By Herb Stebbins(68)
I left one thing out. On the tails of both airplanes, painted, was a lightning bolt and the letters T-C-B. This stood for......Taking Care of Business, Lickity Split.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 10:18:57 By Herb Stebbins(68)
JohnS., this is what kind of person Elvis was. Back in the early 70's on Christmas Eve,on a whem he called all three of his pilots and asked them if they would take he and a group up and fly over the city for a few hours.
This is no small task. It takes a few hours to preflight the airplane and cater it. All three pilots were with their familys of course, so Elvis said bring them along.
This was a major inconvenience but how could they say no. They got back late that evening and it was midnight before they put the airplane to bed. Elvis thanked them for honoring his special request and headed back to Graceland.
The next morning all three pilots wokeup to brand new Cadillac's in their front yards all wrapped in plastic with a bow.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 09/30/2006 09:20:14 By John Scopetta 68
Even though fuel was cheaper back then the cost of operating a Convair 880 has to have been astronomical and the jet star was a tank and has four engines, however it has stand up headroom and built to commercial standards. I really think his soul was that of a reincarnated king because the talent the looks the attitude is way beyond what could be archived in one passage through this life. There is no doubt that his frustration and having to constantly uphold the image has to have taken its toll on the King and the bigger you are the harder you fall so the pendulum swing is much greater for those that archive his status in life. Example Jimmy Hendrix, Dan Rather, Marilyn, Diana and the list goes on and on. This world is not kind to royalty they will do to them what they did to King Louie the 16th. Is happening today at a much younger age. Britney, Whitney and Paris are heading the same way. One of those will be gone soon. Lucky for us we have Terry and some of the other older brothers that have achieved royal status yet retained a true STAGS attitude. God bless TDT forever.

Bobby, this place you talk about,PAL......
I think I remember that place. They had a pay phone right outside the front door. The same one you and Perpich used.
Yah, I remember that place.
It was about 3 minutes away from my house at 90 miles per hour.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 10/02/2006 03:48:16 By Tim Yero
Mr. Ruiz:
I played in a rock band with Billy Swain from Jr High through High School (And beyond),,,

Dale and David did not have a band but used to like sitting in once in with us once in awhile - whenever we were somewhere they were (Which seemed to be quite often back then)...
The songs we always played with Dale and David were - Give Me Money (That's what I want - original version).. and What'd I Say" Ray Charles)
These 2 songs used to last at least 30 minutes due to the numerous verses we could all come up with...in the state we were usually in - one verse was as good as another abnd 30 minutes was as good as a week... I think those two may have tried to get a gig or two on their own eventually but not often if ever did they ever play anywhere that I know of.

One final note - the songs were the same prpgression - meaning one sounded exactly like the other making it easy to swith back and forth..

One final, final note - the sense of humor in the Stags Club was above and beyond any other group I have ever been associated with. There were many fine moments and funny guys but I have to say
the 3 funniest guys in the entire known world to this very day were Dale Cutlip, David Mickelson and --- Mark Leopold.. check with your Brother and I am sure he would agree. I still laugh at some of the antics with those 3... absolutely unbelievable.

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 10/02/2006 03:51:58 By Tim Yero
Mr. Ruiz:
I forgot about Randy:
Randy Hall played with us (Once at a Gables sock hop that I remember)... but only that once. Billy and I were friends with Randy before he came into Stags - he bought my Father's 1951 Plymouth and fixed it up with Dark Blue paint and blue lights under the dash - pre-cursor to 'pimping' in 1965!).

Re: Memories Of The Past Posted at 10/02/2006 04:01:44 By Tim Yero
Herb:
The PAL (Police Atletic League) was a huge warehouse right where Bird Rd and the expressway intersect (I forgot the expressway name - I think it is Don Shula now but originaly 836 to Dadeland).
There were radio sponsored "Open Houses" at the hall nearly every week. Many groups played there but mainly all were local. I did play there in my post High School rock group one weekend when the Rascals played as the headliners and think the Turtles may have played there too, but I don't remember too many other groups. It was very popular and always packed. I did not like playing there because they did not pay well and the stage was a bit cramped with all the activity by 2 or 3 different bands, and the parking lot would get out of control a lot - not real safe...

I think all the open houses ended before the 70's
(Like everything else that was ruined by all the drug use by youngsters)...

May all your dreams come true

Lean against a tree
and dream your world of dreams
Work hard at what you like to
do and try to overcome all obstacles
Laugh at your mistakes
and praise yourself for learning from them
Pick some flowers
and appreciate the beauty of nature
Say hello to strangers
and enjoy the people you know
Don't be afraid to show your emotions
Laughing and crying make you feel better
Love your friends and family with your entire being
They are the most important part of your life
Feel the calmness on a quiet sunny day
and plan what you want to accomplish in life
Find a rainbow and live your world of dreams

Thought you Stags History buffs might enjoy this. In the process of moving things out of my home into storage I stumbled on an old scrap book. In the book I found some correspondence from a few old friends. Forgetting I had these I read a few and they jogged my memory.
I had totally forgotten that through Jim Perpich I had made contact with a TDT member in Tennessee. As I recall, Jim met him while he was in Vietnam. It started off with a few letters then we would talk on the phone. He told me of the similarities between Our Stags and his TDT. They were similar enough to see that we develeped from the same Mother. (Not literally Terry). He did tell me that he was aware of other Chapters of TDT.
This would have been in the 68-69 time frame.
I'm imbarreased to say that it took this correspondence to jog my memory.
I will do a bit of DD in High Schools in Tennessee and see what I can turn up.
The breakup of Stags and other clubs at Gables had a lot to do with events in that area. I don't know if kids in Tennessee would have experienced the same issues we did. Just my opinion but I doubt it.
I will let you know if I dig anything up.

Maybe Jerry can help track down some old Stags from Tennessee - he said he has one more spot left on the neon billboard in front of his property.

This is a followup to my post on this thread on 3/4/08. I took five of the larger citys in Tennessee then found High Schools in the Citys to contact.
I spoke to administrators in the schools. Some actually attended the schools they were working for now. The last school I called was in Chattanooga. I spoke to a teacher that graduated in 1967. He said that there was a TDT Club in existence when he went to High School but not at Notre Dame High School. He didn't know where. I then called a few more schools in that area but didn't get any positive feed back.
This has motivated me enough to contact some of the alumni groups at some of the other High Schools in the area. I'll let you know what I come up with.
I feel like that bank robber in Dirty Harry.

I'd like to bring this thread to the top again !
Herb, if you look on the Counts site, you will find that Art Morrison lives/ lived in TN. Also, maybe Pat (from the DOOZIE II) could help in the endeavor to find Brothers we lost. Remember, they did not lose us ! WE'uns is HERE :>)}

Jerry, Pat Sullivan has been very helpful in locating missing Brothers.
On the topic of Arty Morrison, go to the Brothers list on the Counts Website and you will find Arty's phone and email address. Why don't you call him and see if he ever found his glasses.
On one of these threads I posted about trying to make a TDT contact in the Deep South with members out of the State of Florida. So far nothing to report after about 10 phone calls.
Most of these people are involved in the local school systems.
I will try the local Prisons next.
They are sure nice people but its hard as Hell to get them off the phone.

Back to the elements.
