60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 01/26/2007 03:39:59 By Tim Yero
This thread is devoted to the mid 60's Brother's that are approaching the big #60 years old (For me - it's this year on valentines Day (I was not called 'Dr Love' for no reason...)

it is also devoted to the guys before and after that may have comments about not only living in the 1960's but living in the 60's age group.

I will start it off by saying I am very pleased to still be here. many guys my age were in harms way in the 60's via VietNam - such as Jose Herrera nd myself - we may have had thoughts of never reachng 22, much less 60... BUT HERE WE ARE!

I don't think any different and I don't feel like I am any different now than then. with the exception of the aches and pains, and the wish that the girls at Gables could have been wearing halter tops (Which they did not of course) - I have no regrets.

Yes I have won and lost, but I have played - and I keep on playing - this is what it is all about.
I cannot for the life of me think of any reason why these 19 and 20 year old good lookin girls are not attracted to me (unril I look in the mirrow)... that is the only differences.

What about you guys? I know we all have learned a lot - about ourselves, the world, each other etc... some we would just as soon forget and other moments we cherish. I still don't know what I am supposed to be when I grow up - do you?

And all the things we have done is not over... I may say that I did not think of a 60 yearold guy when I was 18 in Gables and in Stags; I thought at 60 you might as well give it up.
BUT I'm still looking forward to making every day a good day as best I can, to making peple laugh, and to hear the joy in a good story.

Tim in all honesty, I feel the same as you, a bit wiser than in my twenties not smarter just experienced and very lucky to have survived the turbulent sixties and life in general. Life after all is very fragile it can be taken from you without much notice. The Gables girls looked very nice even with out halters and makeup they had youth and class. The school in general had class compared to most of the other high schools in Miami at the time.
Finally, I like you feel good about myself and fall in love with life everyday, resilient to the aches and pains and the fact that the looks have faded but the gusto for life is still there for the taking we just have to try a bit harder these days.

Brother Don , "68"???????????? you must be feeling GREAT if 68 is the number....is that 68 years of age or do you wish you would have been Class of 68....either way, you know we love you and respect you a lot ....you are an old fart..... when are we going fishing????????????????

Tim, just to let you know , how thankful we are that guys like you and Herrera made us proud for the time you spent in Nam allowing the rest of us to have a better future , I will also like to thank Brothers David Saunders 67 (deceased), Larry Gibson 62 ,Richard Bishop 65 ,Rick Mclean 65, plus many other that we still don't know about ......thank you all.....

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 01/29/2007 11:26:06 By Tim Yero
U R Right about the Brothers we do not know about.

I would like to knw about Mr. Mata and a few others that seem to have drifted into the category of unknown (I searced the VA site and Mata is not listed) so probably not a kia...

I spoke with Richard (The King) Bishop the last time at our CG 65' 30 year reunion in 95. He looked greay and could finally tell a few pretty good stories about his U2 flights(as he could not before then due to his TS status). Richard was a Brave football player, Frat Pres and Soldier.

Jose told me he actually liked being a Marine - so he did 2 tours... I'll tell you when I figure that one out! (I much preferred being at home in my rock band and could not wait to get out!)...

As far as the Nam thing - no thanks is necessary
it was just an experience but thanks for your comments; I am personally proud of but am not pleased with Nam as far as the outcome. All this, I have put aside and moved ahead... remebering only those things that matter most. That's why you won't see my opinion on Iraq posted here.

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/02/2007 02:51:33 By Tim Yero
Gaston.. I saw the nice fish you caught on some of the other threads and heard about your miracle par 3 shot at Biltmore that almost went in for a hole-in-one...

So the only thing left is the part about pissing people off..

I've probably read just about all the threads on our site and have yet to see anything where you have pissed anyone off (as one who seems to be pretty good at it myself!)

In this regard, I would say you get pissed off but don't piss people off. That is called enthusiasm, conviction, and concern. I'd say you are going in the right direction as opposed to believing you piss anyone off. Now shut up you hot blood!!!

You are a gentleman to the fullest extent of the word and a true commrade.

I think we would all fight for you in any time of your need but I've never seen you drive in the car before - maybe that's another story!. LOL

Brother Tim, from what I remember of traffic in Miami in the mid 60's, and from riding to school with the elder of the Ruiz brothers, an increasing number of people drove with their horns. And I don't mean Stag horns :>}

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/02/2007 07:29:03 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Tim , I love all in this group, I would take me hours to explain the way I feel about all.....I got here in the late 50's and all of you became my other family , when my own Family was not around , as stupid as it might sound to some that don't know me or are reading this site, Stags was what made me thrive to do better, it was the love and acceptance that I got in those younger years that made me a better person today......

Gastonnnnnnnnn:

Most people who know me for any lenght of time; know that I was a TDT (Stags). Two guys knew and never acknowledged that they were also Stags. I was one of the best customers (when at American Bankers) of Steve Trescott and we would talk weekly and have lunch monthly and he never said a word. But when I worked at Young Stoval & Co. Rocky Young (owner and Gables graduate) introduced me to Jim Taudt another broker in the office. Jim knew I was a TDT and he never indicated he was also and I saw him daily. I never knew he was until I saw the list in 2003. I tried to call him (left message) about coming to reunion but no return call.

I can understand Steve's reasoning even though I dont agree with it. Taudt no idea and I dont waste my time...maybe your classmates can wake this guy up or if he's that tough smack him around a little...

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 08:53:18 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Terry, many of us have spent hours on the phone along with countless emails and snail mail trying to reach and convince some of these guys to re-engage with us. The work has been done and believe me some of them have made it very clear that they want to be left alone. Period!
I'm hard headed like you and sometimes I go a bit too far after someone says no. Two of our brothers became very upset with me within the last three months. No need to mention specifics but there are a group that want to be left alone. Whether you agree with them or not you have to respect their wishes. In my opinion trying to reconnect with Steve, Jim, Greg or Doug Norris or Paul Johnstone would be a mistake.

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 03:14:54 By Jerry '65
Gastonnnn y Terry.. ... Jerry here ! I agree with the Herbster, some people just want to be left (alone,by the wayside, behind, or whatever!). Some may think it frivolous, some foolish, some a pain in the routine, some embarassing! But, whatever, gentle talk is the answer. IMHO
Jerry

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 05:54:31 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
We all, can agree and disagree about what to expect from some...some of us are "TRUE STAGS" and some where opportunistic Stags that needed to have involvement for who knows what reasons back then?????......Today, I personally still love them all and won't make excuses for them and I do respect their position, its their loss.....But they are still my "BROTHERS" and my heart and arms will always be open to them.....oo-ooo

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 07:12:02 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Jerry, during the reunion process we all had the opportunity to speak with many Brothers and Sisters, some of them I had never met before.
When you speak to so many people (over the phone) sometimes a bond developes. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know 7-Brothers that I'd never met before.
There is a common thread with all of them. They are all ashamed of themselves and their lives. For no other reason then financial status. In their minds they never made the sacrifices necessary to achieve self worth. They consider themselves to be failures. In my mind, they are far from it. For this reason they have never reconnected.
We talk about this all the time but I have not been able to convince them otherwise.
The sad part about it is, in the early stages(they don't have computers so they don't see this site) they would ask me hundreds of questions about everybody. One of my short comings is asking too many questions but these folks have me beat by a long shot.
Jerry, some things in life you can change and some you can't. It makes me sad to think that every day these Brothers wake up, it just doesn't get any better.

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 07:32:09 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
DITTO HERB.....who cares if they did good or Bad we still love them and many of us before and after the reunion and during the search , provided them with any assistance to be part of the get together no questions asked and they still said "NO"......Pride is important to some but not all.....you and I tried to help ......and some tried to take advantage of our assistance....but like I said before ...its their loss......I do believe we have a very powerfull group of GUYS AND GALS , willing to help no questions asked , just for the fact we care and that we are greatfull for what we have and are willing to share to make us all equal ..... some of us were luckier than others , but were are family and willing to help when the call for help is there.....remember the Hurricane days.....

Good to hear you are still around and kickin..

Gaston and Herb and all the others, whom I love: I agree, and admire all you have tried to do. I was just examining from the perspective of one who has not been able to get down there yet. I am not rich with moola. But I am in the other riches of this planet and Universe. Just be gentle. All God's children are our neighbors. Love you guys, Jerry

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/06/2007 08:27:34 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Gaston, these Brothers have so much on their plate that getting back in the groove with us is the least of their priorities. They are just trying to survive. All but one suffers from major depression. What you or I feel at this point is meaningless to them.
Atleast they have not given up and that's good enough for me.
I know Bobby Ajhar will see this and I hope he isn't offended by it. I just admire him.
I look at all the people I know that had good excuses in life to give up and Bobby is at the top of my list. All of us in the mid 60's know Bobby. Bobby played football in High School and College. He was a very physical person.
Bob had a bad hand of cards delt to him and suffers from a stroke that left him paralysed on half his body. I don't think I could handle that.
I've got to admire him for his willpower. He's a tuff little shit! Reminds me of that Energizer Rabbit.
If you all have a chance send him an email. He misses hearing from you guys.

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/07/2007 11:25:08 By Larry Silver
I "think" therefore "I am", no "I am" therefore "I think". I think that some folks reading this public message board may get the wrong impression about the active participants of Stags. They might think that this is an ego driven, historical reliving of past reunions going on forever. BUT, from what I have seen they and I am not including myself in the honest compliment are really all about what a charitable organization does by reaching out to others, giving them a hand whether moral support or otherwise. That combined with laughter and fun. Life struggles does not evade anyone during our tenure and if someone is willing to lend a hand during tough times who would reject them. The public pronouncements may be detrimental and misunderstood, so, for those who think not as I have expressed above, talk to some of them and you will find out, these young teens grew into men of real character.

Turtle:
I moved from Pompano Beach to Homosassa July 2005 and live about 45 miles from you!

I actually worked in Ocala when I first came up but finished the Consulting job November 2005 (Too much of a trip for the pay)...

Could not make the last reunion because of the job I had at that time (ran 24 mall stores for Bobby Allison all over the State - about 65 hours a week)...and could not get away at the time.

Now I'll have to travel the 300 miles to get to the next one - maybe we'll ride together!!

Larry:
I agree - I think!
We've got some pretty good guys when we were in HS and they are still good guys - yourself included.

As far as 'outsiders' looking at the site and wondering about some of th entries - as long as we know what it's about, that is all that counts. You hit it right on the head... with greatest respect,

Terry, He is an Attorney and he sure sounds like one...well said Larry.. ... for whats its worth, the day we all went Golfing after the 66 reunion, we laughed at the thought of what people reading the site would be thinking about the way we get on each other..... we laughed and said who cares , we know what we are getting acrossed to each other and only us would know what fun we are having doing so.....

Larry My Friend you are so correct. I have been away for many years and when I returned to see my childhood friends and the 66 Reunion my classmates opened their hearts and said you never left my friend. This is our brotherhood.

A CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

But what is a friend?

A confidant?
A shoulder to cry on?
An ear to listen?
A heart to feel?

A friend is all these, and more.

No matter where we met,

No matter how long we've been together

I call you friend.

A word so small, yet so large in feeling,

a word filled with emotion,
a word overflowing with love.

Truly great things come in small packages.

Once the package of friendship has been opened,
it can never be closed.

It is a constant book always waiting
To be read and enjoyed.

We may have our disagreements,
We may have our disappointments,
We may argue, we may concern one another,
But friendship is a unique bond
That lasts through all tribulations.

A part of each of us goes into our friendships
Our humor, our experiences,
Our tears.

Friendships are foundations
Necessary for life and love.

Friends - you and me -

You brought another friend
And then we were three

We started our group,
Our circle of friends.

There is no beginning
There is no end.

Warmest regards to all, Ivan

In response to those brothers whose lives, through self analysis, doesn't compare to ours, and who decided not to reunite saddens me. I have never been one to judge others based on financial success. I can only think of my high school boyfriend George Cadenas who DID come to the Stags reunion after much prodding by many of us. George's life has been plagued with addiction and his lot in life is dismal. We all accepted him with open arms, and he (and I) had a great time dancing together and talking again. I am thankful that I had the time to see him again. Maybe, just maybe, we can get one of these seven Herb to come to our next reunion.

Re: 60 years old? You Gotta' Be Kiddin' me!Posted at 02/08/2007 04:10:56 By David Steger
Herb, Gaston, I agree with you on how people whom we grew up with are having a tough time today. It is hard for them to see their friends today because of they way they look, feel or even money woes.

I would have to say for a few of the 70's guys that is the case.

In my past line of work that is a very common thing, drugs divorce and even suicide.

Larry and Janet also have very valid points.

All, I can say is you did your very best to bring together the brothers from the old days but do to their individual situation you were unable to do it. But you all TRIED and thats what counts.

I only wished that I could have been part of that brother hood when I was at Gables. I did have many many friends in Stags and other clubs and enjoyed thier friendship. Even though I did not join any for what ever reason, everbody treated me the same and I will never forget it.

Gone but not forgotten. I would like one day to come back to the Stags reunion. I never even been to my class reunions because of work and other issues, but now that I am retired would like to see some old friends.

Keep up the web I truly enjoy it when I have my coffee or beer whenever time of the day it is.

Who cares what the public thinks when they view the site. It is all about friends and family.

By the way Gaston when are the photos of the golfing coming out.

David 71

Thanks you guys for the accolades, advise etc... my prostate still is fine and I hurt my back pretty bad in 1970 in Vietnam (So I am doing 1/2 ok!). I've learned to live with the back pain by taking a variety of medicines for 40 year.. but have found the real cure is being an asshole/at least I have an excuse!

LOL
PS FYI My Brother Jeff (some of you knew him in the last years of Stags - he was in the final Sophomore class in the Club when it disbanded)is 4 years younger and is fightin his cause against Prostate cancer (Level 4). He had his checked (everything ok) every year until this recent discovery... It is a real concern to be addressed to ''all'' of us guys - so the advise is well worth your attention. Take care of yourself and evrything will be better for you.

Terry: Thanks for the 'tip'. The list of medicines I have had would come close to filling up this web site...

I've tried them all and the only thing that has ever helped is Celebrex. I take one when I just can't handle it anymore (I can tell when this is by when I ramble too much on this web site or too many people tell me to shut the $f^##2=k up!)...

I'm sure there is a lot out there that would help, but everything else I've tried maybe worked for awhile and either started hurtin my tummy or did not work as well (Aleve was good for awhile but gives ulcers after awhile)...

Although I am prescribed several types, I do not take any pain killers at all, none of them work for more than a week and most of them have drastic side effects if you use them too long --- having spent 40 years in pain, I cannot take anything (other than a Celebrex once in awhile).. unless I just want to live in la la land all the time... not for me ... yet ...

Celebrex TOTALLY WORKS!

I'm with Terry on the Tramadol. It doesn't replace your disks, but it sure helps !

I like the" la la land" feeling more and more as i get older. My golf game get better when I don't think about it.

La la land is a relative term. Somewhat enjoyable but with drastic eventual side effects. The problem is, I've always felt like I've been in la la land without the pills anyway, so who needs em'??? !!!

Apparently, Tim, you always have !

John,
I think you and I and our dates were in la la land a few times together in the late 60s and early 70s. I've tried to maintain that feeling as naturally as possible as I've gotten older. there is nothing wrong with la la land as long as you can still function and function well!

Janet that was no la la land it was real and sometimes it felt like we lived in Oz no cares fun fun fun and do what you feel and it was good. Later during college and beyond it got a bit scary more like la la la la land but not good. I wish I had more vivid memories and pictures of high school, days a CD would be nice.

Gaston and John,
From what I read here on the golf thread I'm not sure much golf would be played with me in the foursome. Best ball maybe. I play but I dont think we have similar handicaps. What is yours? or do you have one!!!! John, what is yours? I know you post one. John, it seemed I always kept it together through college (what I remember anyway). Made some stupid choices then, but hey it got me where I am today and that is a very very good place. Golf on my course would be fun. Would you drive up here to Boca? Our clubhouse is being renovated now but we do have a pool bar for lunch?????

I love my life today very much; I try to stay honest and strong, true to myself and the ones I love. The same as I have always tried to live, it works pretty well. That is just me.

Sooooo my handicap is 20 and I shot my handicap. I can get down to mid teens but I have to play and practice and all I do now for leisure is agility trials with my dogs, so time is short for golf.

I would love to come up and visit your club. Believe me our game with the 65.5 boys gets very series but is full of fun and laughter we would love to get you to play. We can do best ball that’s just fine. Gaston is pretty good for just having started. Isidro and Toto are good Garcia is a great striker but doesn’t play much. Janet, is great fun!

Gentlemen, and Ladies,
I am right around the corner from 60 years old and I assure you it is an extremely high mileage 59 in December for me. But you know what, apart from the aches and pains of the total knee replacement on one side and an allograph to repair torn acl on the other knee, lower back disc problems, and feet that feel like they are on fire from nerve problems due to arch colla[pse, I feel fantastic. In spite of blocked arteries and a so so ticker, I wake up and get to my feet gingerly, and never cease to be amazed that it all still works.
My favorite pain in all the world, is the pain that follows 18 holes of golf. Ask John "Advil" Scopetta , Manny "King Kong" Garcia and my partner Billty "the Golden Bear" Adams and they will surely agree. It 's great that while you are focused on doing it well, you don't feel a thing but afterwards look out. It all come flooding back like memories of your first lover. That's what the 19th hole is all about.
Jerry, I'm glad to know you will be an old geezer (60) before me. Maybe you should take up golf. It will give you something to do in your old age besides swilling cerveza from a bowl. Actually that sounds like fun come to think of it. Maybe I'll take it up when the old bod no longer allows me to golf. Norma and Jim (mom and dad who is 89 and still kickin" assure me getting old is not for sissies
Any and all golfers whether geezers or youngstas should take any measures necessary to try to get to the "Doozie". It will be definately worth the price of admission
Much love,
Steve Aguilar
PS I'm posting this on the golf thread too because it's really about golf.

Steve: This is not the golf thread; you forgot to mention the memory or paying attention lapses as you get older.

John: There will be no bestball - individual medal play will divide the men from the boys, even with your outragious handicap. Bye the way, Billy pre-approves all handicaps. (Send money)..
