This is a new thread. It is intended to function as a thread used to post information that you feel might be interesting, useful or helpful.

I will start with this first contribution.

WHAT WAS JOE ATWOOD'S NAME?
Until I read the sign above the registration book at the visitation on March 1, I assumed his name was Joseph or Joe. Joe's real name was Jackie William Atwood. Ed, Joe's son, did not know why he was named Jackie William or how he acquired the name Joe.

Actually, I figured it was one of you special friends of Gaston's that love to give him S...! However, Commadore, not realising that your own name wasn't there seems to me to be lack of consciousness, or temporary lapse of reality! And you do what for a living? Love you too! Jerry

The youngest Stags are in their early 50s. The oldest TDT/Stags are approaching 80.

Medical things we older folks should be aware of that I did not know.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE - Alzheimer's is now the leading cause of death for folks 65+. Alzheimer's exceeds the other leading causes:diabetes, influenza and pneumonia.

AVERAGE LIFE SPAN - Americans now have an average life span of 77.6 years.

DO YOU KNOW (statistically speaking)HOW LONG YOU WILL LIVE? To get the answer go to www.livingto100.com , answer 40 questions related to your health and family history. It will take you about ten minutes to complete. You can also get advice about changes you can make to live longer.

GETTING OLDER IS EXPENSIVE - Medications are very expensive. In 1992 Rx medications for 65+ averaged $542 a year. In 2002 that cost had increased to $1,740. In 2007 it is even higher. If I did not have insurance my annual cost for medications (3 medications for diabetes, 1 for blood pressure, 1 for heart) would be about $15,000. Think about it! The annual cost of medications for the average 65+ American is more than their parents paid for their first home.

Re: THINGS I DID NOT KNOWPosted at 03/21/2007 12:43:43 By Tim Yero
I was hoping the expense of getting older would be more relative to the average cost of a bottle of Jack Daniels, a glass of pinot gregio and a good steak (Cooked medium rare)...

Now that I had a little pre-elderly operation medically (to correct a youthful problem of a bad shoulder nerve) I can see that all the increasing aches and pains are the real difference. Hopefully if you stay in shape and eat right (Along with a few good drinks, steaks and friends) every once in awhile... the pain and expense can be tolerable.

There are millions that cannot afford required or even basic treatments - for those I give special blessings... Maybe if people as successful as Gates who give all their mindless billions to other parts of the world would understand that a world cure would be better strated at home - we would all be more appreciative; Maybe if Brad and Angelie (and the material girl Madona) paid more attention to those needy children at home we would be more appreciative; maybe if we (as a world medical leader) would stop selling all our miracles to other countries (Like stinin Canada)for cheaper than we can get it at home, we would be more appreciative.

When I become President - this shall be so - as well as many more positive steps (Better start running before I get too old!)...

Brother John, You are a very well respected BROTHER of the "almost" older generation! And, your work with the Scouts tells everyone that you are in touch with the real world needs(the Mosquito netting being an example)! So, now what should the Brothers do? Re: THINGS I DID NOT KNOWPosted at 03/21/2007 05:34:22 By Herb Stebbins(68)
John, I had no idea that Alzheimer's was such a killer. It took my Uncle in just one year. He went from being very sharp to a vegetable in his last year. When I was not working I would always go over to his house to play cards with him. In the last few months he forgot how to play cards and even forgot my name.
In High School he played quarterback and played without a helmet. He got the name "Hammerhead Stebbins" from that. He also boxed in high school and semi-pro. I have to think that all that trauma to the brain contributed to the illness.
I hope that a cure can be found in the short term.

Let me start off by saying this to Jim Kavney. If this post extends beyond good taste, feel free to Bleep it. No humor intended in that comment.

History of the Middle Finger

Well, now.. ...here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified. Isn't history more fun when you know something about it?

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Taw tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" or in its shorter version "pluck yew".

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, see, we can still pluck yew! Since "pluck yew" is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the begging has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative we all know today. Thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."

For those of you that travel to France, keep in mind that this salute to the French is still appropriate today.

I only post this for its educational value and to imphasize that the Brothers of the mid-60's do bring something intellectually to this website and are not the Bastard children that Terry Grant makes us out to be. lol

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing.

Herb: I am sure your last message was very interesting but you said in the beginning 'for all my intelligent friends'... I stopped reading the rest of it at that point.

Things I did not know:
Most everything; until recently, mostly due to reading all the info on the great Stags website (mostly Herbs' post).

I didn't want to start a Cigar thread because I don't think there is enough interest. Billy Adams turned me on to this place in Stuart Florida. The name of the shop isE&J Cigars.
Address is 6582 S. Kanner Hwy, Stuart,FL. Phone is
772-463-2100. email is eperez@elcigars.co
They are closed on Monday.
I is run by an old Cuban man and his Son. He rolled in Cuba and continues to roll for Movie Stars ans Pro athletes.
The quality and popularity is not reflected in his prices. Most are beween $3-$6/smoke.
They hand roll right there in the store and will ship directly to you.
Being an avid Cigar smoker, I have to say that the ones I've smoke so far are some of the best I've ever had. That includes Cuban's or any of the top line Padrons. Some of these (Cubans/Padrons) are $30-$40 smokes, some much higher. If you ever get up there, or want to buy someone a special gift, you might want to give them a shot.
