Thought of the dayPosted at 04/05/2007 08:25:03 By David Steger 71
THE MAYONNAISE JAR and 2 CUPS OF COFFEE

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle,

when 24 Hours in a day is not enough,

remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items infront of him.

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise
jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.

He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full..

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured
the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling

the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided,

"I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things -

God, family, children, health, friends, and Favorite passions --things that if
everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued,

"there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have
room for the things that are important to you.

So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Play With your children.

Take time to get medical checkups.

Take your partner out to dinner.

Play another 18.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

"Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter.

Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.

"I'm glad you asked".

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's
always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

David, if you would have said MAYONNAISE, COFFEE AND CIGARS I think you might have caught my attention sooner........You know...the basic food groups...LOL.
Your story tells it all.
Nothing like a story that puts life into perspective.
Sometimes it's easier to understand in the written sense and much harder to make it part of your life.
Hope all is well with you in retirement!
And by the way....find some some time for some more coffee. Herb
PS Always better with a Cigar!

Herb: Good thought but I think you can 'sing' about peace anytime you want; for Freedom you sometimes must fight...

Hence: Hippies VS Soldiers... they all win when at peace and all loose when not - the common ground is the Freedom they all share. Some will fight and some will sing about peace... good to listen to but doesn't do much good when those who defy the freedom of others are pointing a gun down your throat. (Or blowing up cities)...

Let's hear some Bob Dylan - that's better stuff!!! Lay Lady Lay!!! All Around The Watch Tower.

War is no fun for anyone and Peace is indeed rare.. we are all pretty stupid thinking we can have the best of both without protecting our interest and well being. Just ask someone who lives in Israel about how nice it is to live in fear of being blown up everyday. I would not live there and do not think you. me or anyone else wants 'there' to become 'here'. Think about it...

Ride on ... Peace Brother !!

Re: Thought of the dayPosted at 05/09/2007 12:41:24 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Tim, in the context of War and Freedom, I agree with you. Those words dealt more with personal relationships.
Bringing up Bob Dylan does provoke some thought.
Back in the 60's we had Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez, just to name a few. They were institutions in the clash against what most (the younger generation anyway) perceived to be right against wrong.
Like always, the poor soldier is stock in the middle, without the luxury of choice. And once again we have Politics at their best.
Through that period which included Kent State, we as citizens would stand up for what we believed in. Sometimes right and sometimes wrong.
I do wonder now if we as a nation have the right stuff. Time will tell.
Sense I pulled the pin on this live grenade, I will do what I do best...run for cover and quote from Forrest Gump..."That's all I've got to say about that."

Herb:
Believe me - I know you better - you would not run from anything... You may be scared but would perform... (remember what Joe A. told you - "you're the QB so you pick the play!")

I definetly know you would do so. God willing, you won't ever have to make such a decision in real time.

Folk song wise I liked Laura Nyro and the best of all Joan Mitchell, they both had voices of Angels. Both of these ladies wrote and sang some wicked little tunes that are keepers. Laura died a couple of years ago (wrote and sang "Eli's Comin" made more popular by 3 Dog Night).. Dylan was a drugged up clown but really did i.d. the times with the lyrics and music he wrote.

My number one favorite folk song heroes were Richie Havens and Fred Neil I met richie Havens in the Grove once during the 66-67 - a true marvel with a unique sound... Fred was a little older but absolutely fantastic...

I liked Joan Baez for her voice but only for some of the songs she sang which were not her own lyrics - she basically pissed me of with her anti war BS... anti war songs when you are in the war yourself is devastating to moral.. so are people like Joan Fonda, Ketchup Kerry and the huge jack ass Jessee J. These people should live in another country because to me they are all traitors and do nothing but bad mouth America out of their own ignorance.

lol Tim TDT65

Re: Thought of the dayPosted at 05/09/2007 04:30:40 By Herb Stebbins(68)
Tim, I love Richie Havens too. He played a big part in Woodstock.
I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this CD.
You're good!!
Make sure you send that picture of the Polish Airliner out to a few of the Brothers.
I will make a copy of it to put up in United's Flight Operations Office in Chicago. Garcia has impressed upon me the importance of Political correctness, so I hope it doesn't offend any of our 5000 Polish pilots. LOL.

Re: Thought of the dayPosted at 05/10/2007 07:45:15 By Tim Yero
Herb:
There are a lot of Polish pilots according to my info. (With the exception of the Irish who are very strict on flights as they are all police academy flunkees), the Polish can't fly very well and get lost a lot; but they can flirt very well with the attendants and drink with the best of them on layovers - so they fit right in.

Did I mention how well they 'Polka' with those lovely sounding accordians? - guess not.

BUZZARD

If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

BAT

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

BUMBLEBEE

A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

PEOPLE

In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up.

Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, But Faith looks up. Live Simply, Love Generously, Care Deeply, Speak Kindly and Trust in those who care about you.

Earth Status Report - 2007

If the population of the Earth was reduced to that of a small town with 100 people, it would look something like this:

57% Asians
21% Europeans
14% Americans (northern and southern)
8% Africans

52% women
48% men

70% coloured-skins
30% caucasians

89% heterosexuals
11% homosexuals

6 people would own 59% of the whole world wealth and all of them will be from the United States of America

80% would have bad living conditions
70% would be uneducated
50% underfed

1 would die
2 would be born
1 would have a computer
1 (only one) will have higher education

When you look at the world from this point of view, you can see there is a real need for solidarity, understanding, patience and education.

Also think about the following :

This morning, if you woke up healthy, then you are happier than the 1 million people that will not survive next week.
If you never suffered a war, the loneliness of the jail cell, the agony of torture, or hunger, you are happier than 500 million people in the world.

If you can enter into a church, mosque, temple, synagogue or any other holy place without fear of jail or death, you are happier then 3 million people in the world.

If there is a food in your fridge, you have shoes and clothes, you have bed and a roof, you are richer then 75% of the people in the world.

If you have bank account, money in your wallet and some coins in the money-box, you belong to the 8% of the people on the world, who are well-to-do.

If you read this you are three times blessed because:
1. Somebody just thought of you.
2. You don't belong to the 200 million people that cannot read.
3. And... You have a computer!

As somebody once said:

- Work as if you don't need money,
- Love as if you've never been hurt,
- Dance, as if nobody can see you,
- Sing, as if no one can hear,
- Live, as if the Earth was a heaven.

Ivan, well said and it is true.

Re: Thought of the dayPosted at 08/22/2007 09:53:18 By Steve Aguilar
Ivan,
I think what you have said goes to the heart of the matter. Live every day as if its your last, and enjoy every moment as if there will be no more. This is very sage advice because when it comes to duration, there are no guarantees. We are truly blessed to live more comfortably, in superior housing , while eating better, and living more contentedly with more free time than 99% of the worlds population. What more do we want or need. Turn to your partner in this glorious life, wrap your arms around her, and thank the lord for our many blessings.

Much Love,
Steve Aguilar

Everyone is in a hurry to scream "racism" these days!

"In what aisle could I find the Polish sausage?"

The clerk looks at him and says, "Are you Polish?"

The guy (clearly offended) says, "Well, yes I am. But let me ask you something. If I had asked for Italian sausage would you ask me if I was
Italian?

Or if I had asked for German bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?

Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?

Or if I had asked for a Taco would you ask if I was Mexican? Would you?

The clerk says, "Well, no!"

"If I asked for some Irish whiskey, would you ask if I was Irish?"

"Well, I probably wouldn't!"

With deep self-righteous indignation, the guy says, "Well then, why did you ask me if I'm Polish because I asked for Polish sausage?"

The clerk replies, "Because you're at Home Depot."

Cheers Brothers

Keep reading to the bottom of the page -- don't stop at the feet (You'll
see).

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy
family.

The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's
guest room.

Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement.

As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the
wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied,
"Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very
hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in
their bed where they could have a good night's rest.

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his
wife in tears.

Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the
field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you
have let this happen?

The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused.

The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you
let the cow die.

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied.

"When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold
stored in that hole in the wall.

Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good
fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it."

"Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for
his wife. I gave him the cow instead.

Things aren't always what they seem."

Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way
they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every out come
is always to your advantage. You just might not know it until some time
later...

THIS MESSAGE FOR LADIES ONLY!

HUSBANDS FOR SALE! ALL IN GOOD FUN

"I LOVE YOU ALL"

A store that sells husbands has just opened in
Zimbabwe, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE !

There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights.

There is, however, a catch .. You may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband .

On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord.

The second floor sign reads:

Floor 2 -
These men have jobs, love the Lord, and
love kids.

The third floor sign reads:

Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking.

"Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep
going.

She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads:

Floor 4

These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids,
are drop- dead good looking and help with the
housework.

"Oh, mercy me!" she exclaims, "I can hardly stand
it!"

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads:

Floor 5

These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids,
are drop- dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor and the sign reads:

Floor 6

You are visitor 4,363,012 to this floor. There
are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.

Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store. Watch your step as you exit the building, and have a nice day!

This is the reason why we men love our ladies they all are one of kind and will change their minds at any time. Cheers, Ivan

Enjoy:

HEALTH ALERT -- DANGEROUS NEW VIRUS:

There is a dangerous virus being passed around electronically, orally, and by hand. This virus is called Weary-Overload-Recreational-Killer(WORK). If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss, or anyone else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT.

This virus will wipe out your private life completely.

If you should come into contact with WORK, put your jacket on and take two good friends to the nearest grocery store. Purchase the antidote known as Work-Isolating-Neutralizer-Extract (WINE) or Bothersome-Employer-Elimination-Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain as it slaps on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or even just gazed at the Sun into the fading night?

You better slow down. Don't dance so fast.
Time is short and the music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask “How are you”? Do you really hear the reply?

When the day is done do you lie in your bed,
with your next hundred chores running through your head?

You'd better slow down, don't dance so fast.
Life is short and the music won't last.

Ever told your child, “We'll do it tomorrow”?
And in your haste, not see their real sorrow?

Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die?
Cause you never had time to just call and say, 'Hi'?

You'd better slow down, don't dance so fast;
Our time here is short, the music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
you miss half the fun which is just getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
it is like a gift you don’t open.... and thrown away.

You'd better slow down, don't dance so fast;
Your time here is short, the music won't last.
Your life is not a race so take it slower,
Hear the music, before the song is over.

Love, Tim...TDT65

Time with the ones that you care about is not infinate.

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below.'Excuse me,can you help me? I promised afriend I would meet him an hour ago,but I don't know where I am.'

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied,You are at 31 degrees,14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees,49.09 minutes west longitude.'

She rolled her eyes and said,'You must be a Republican.'

'I am,'replied the man.'How did you know?'

'Well,'answered the balloonist,'everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost.Frankly, you've not been much help to me.'

The man smiled and responded,'You must be a Democrat.'

'I am,'replied the balloonist.'How did you know?'

'Well said the man,'you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are,due to a large quantity of hot air.You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault.

I just got this from a Brother(Class of 65).
Thought I would share it.
It is in two parts but because of its length I will only print the poem.
Around the corner I have a friend, in this city that has no end, Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, and before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face, for life is a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger then, and now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game, tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say! I will call on Jim...Just to show that I'm thinking of him.
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, and distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir, Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
Remember to always say what you mean.
If you love someone, tell them.
Don't be afraid to express yourself.
Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you, because when you decide that it is the right time, it might be too late.
Seize the day. Never have regrets.
And most importantantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they helped make you the person that you are today.

This might have been posted before on another thread before but reenforces what's really important.

PERSISTENCE...

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

Calvin Coolidge

I am not sure that I would be quoting "Silent Cal" these days. His Presidency is stranger than today's economic climate. Some say he holds the record for most hours NAPPED by a President, Republican or Democrat.

He was known for his few words although supposed to be quite the orator for his day. A newspaper writer told him she had a bet that she could get him to say more than two words. His answer was "You lose!" She supposedly replyed when hearing of his death, "Who knew?"

Well, as one of our other brothers pointed out in an earlier email this week, We are getting the change of time, Halloween and the Presidential election all in one week. Kind of hard to decide which is scariest!!!!!!!!!

Jack, I know very lttle of his Presidency. That is of no interest to me. I do love some of his quotes though. Some are very profound and others sound like he was totally out of touch with reality. I do like this one...."Don't expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong."
Happy Halloween.

years ago a very old friend that was Black , told me .....we are not greatful to our people that try to make it in life' we still try to bring them down ..its not a white thing is within us to destroy our progress.... example- you take a large pot of hot water drop some crabs into it and as a few try to escape the hot water ,the rest will grab on and bring us back in....
