STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/10/2007 11:42:56 By Tim Yero
Stags Brothers from ANY Year:

Every Stag alive can join in an tell us all about your hours, days, weeks and years spent in some of the more 'colorful' venues of your day.

Don's Den, Hot Shoppes, Jimmies Hurricane are just a few. Tahiti Beach, the Rockpit Quarries, the Grove, Miami Beach - where did you hang with the Brother's of Stags ? ...

Any story is accepatable as long as the venue was not on Gables HS property (or any other High School). Keep it clean...

Stags parties with other Clubs (Girls or Guys) or any place you went will be deemed a place we need to remember with you... some of us were there too. Maybe at the same, maybe at different times; we all can share a grin or two...

Lies, promises, funny or serious... does not matter. Relive what you remember with all your Brother's - after so many years you may just hear from one that was there too. If you have to fudge on the accuracy, we will not blame you or hold fault - we will just chalk it up to wishful thinking.

What were your infamous exploits? What can you tell that you have never spoken before ? You are among Brother's so let's hear it...

Whose going first?

Tim, as far as partys go, number one was always at Jim Taudte's House. His parents would bankroll these partys with the best food and always a great band. These parties made college depressing by those standards. Boxing Larry Silver on Taudte's beach was a hoot.
I don't think any of us will forget Don's Den and Melba's little black book.
Right up there were the weekends at Kris Kimel's house and the long nights raising hell at Billy Holloways apartment.
Hot Shop's while rushing Stags with Billy Adams and getting some lessons in wrestling at Gaston's with Billy and Larry Volonino. If I had any doubt at that time that I wanted to be part of Stags it was erased quickly.
One of the funniest times was scuba diving with Garcia, Cindy Hays and David Edwards. It could have been terminal.
The greatest thing of all Tim, is right now, being able to reunite with all of you.

I almost forgot...under the catagory of funny, I was over at Ajhar's house one weekend. Mrs. Ajhar was selling plates that were sold as unbreakable. Mr. Ajhar said "Try to break it Herb." I threw it up and hit it, breaking it into many pieces. Mr. Ajhar said that plate most likely was defective so he handed me another plate and said try it again. Mrs. Ajhar grabbed the plate from me and said "that won't be necessary". Bobby still has one of those plates.

Thanks for being the first contributors - Herb and Gaston:

Speaking of your fun times at the Edward's:
My Dad, (out of the construction and horse business in the 60's) opened a little grocery mart on the corner of Sunset down the street from the Edward's; across from the Church. (I was about 16 and ran the store for my Dad on some Saturdays). I met Diane and her little sister Gayle and immediately became real good friends. They loved the fact that I was in a rock band at the time and were very supportive.

Diane asked if my band could play at a party she was having at her house (I believe it was her sweet 16 party). We played and her Dad was so impressed he funded my very first demo session recording; leading to stardom, riches and fame(<
Diane and I were friends through High School and I am so impressed with her success as a producer and Gayle's as an actress. I think Diane had a crush on me - one that never flourished. Diane's Mom is Gloria DeHaviland's sister. A very top name actress in the 40's and 50's. I never met her but Diane's Mom was beautiful - as a person as well as a 'good looker'.

Dr. Edwards was a real grin too. He had a hawaiian steel guitar set up for me when we played at his house and showed me the various skills it took to play. I never mastered it of course but it did teach me the basic functions of using a slide bar on my guitar.

I touched base with Diane for the very first time since High School last year after looking at the Gables High reunion info - got her email and we write one another once in awhile. My Mom was the typing teacher's aid at Gables till 1977 and always let me know how Diane was doing as she asked how I was doing often - Diane was a year behind me.

David was just a 'baby' then so I did not get to know him well at all. Glad you guys carried on the tradition.

PS The little store my Dad owned (He ended up with 3 stores in various parts of Miami) was wiped out from Carol and Donna; two hurricanes that came within 3 weeks of each other, destroying the business twice (no power, no deliveries, etc.). Never recovered.

Great times...
and GREAT STORIES --- KEEP THEM COMING !!

I was having lunch at a steakhouse here in Boca last week and in walks David Edwards!!!! I wouldn't have recognized him but the woman, his collegue, introduced me to him. Both of our mouths dropped. I have his card and am having lunch with him soon. Anybody want me to give him your numbers? We had so many wonderful fun times at David's house. He looks great. He is a banker here in town. I am going to print this message board and give it to him.

I remember Captain Desmond from my Pan Am days. I had a deal like that at the Clowe's and Bev Hughes house where moms liked the hooch as did I and they had nice swimming pools. Speaking of Clowe Mike was a brother of 55 whose dad invented Coppertone...Mike passed away in his late 30's or early 40's

Terry just about covered it except for the card games at Honky Rush's house, Alan Finneston's house tinkering with the hot rods, and the art school ( :-))which I think was on Douglas Rd.

Janet, Remember the Grad. party from South Miami at Dee Dee's house, David broke up with me and started seeing Billy Holloways girlfriend. We also had great times at Linda Hardamen's and Billy Holloway's house. Lot's of kissing, isn't that right Gaston

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/22/2007 11:23:43 By Terrence W. Grant
I worked on cars at Bill Henderson house. Jim I agree you on the art school ???? Don must have gone there with Freddie the Plumber

Tim, I had my first drink when I was 6...My dad used to go to PX bar on an airforce base in Hitchcock, Texas. I would sit at a little table and sip beer and then climb a beer box and put nickles in slot machine. Switched to vodka/scotch in high school with a few beer chasers here and there

I was off and running for the next 40 years...last drink 7/13/83

STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/22/2007 11:36:31 By Tim Yero
Terry:
Congrats on the 1983 last drink... you started pretty early at 6!... I had some beer 'sips' too as when I was a little kid but did not like the taste.. that took some doing. I never really acquired a real liking for beer (or anything else)until a lot later on. I never really drank much until after VietNam when I started working for Southern Bell... many long 'social' evenings at the bar across the street at the Everglades Hotel with 'Ruthie' the waitress any work college I could grab along the way (I worked at 330 Biscayne Blvd)... I lived out in West Miami and could not get home without 2 hours of traffic at 5pm... so I just spent the two (or more) there most of the time.

That was long ago, several 'hundreds' of dollars (in drinks and tips) and long over.

Anyway, we're still here and can talk about it - that's the important thing. I can drink occasionally and it really has never been something I was addicted to. I give thanks for that as I know it must be a struggle if you have the disease for it.

Bless each day.

Marie,
Yes, I do remember the grad party at Dee Dees. How could I forget Linda Hardemans. We lived there as well. Its amazing we didn't get in more trouble than we did. I guess we kept it all inside. I don't remember David breaking up with you at that party. But, I do remember him breaking up with me to date you!! Little did I know then that you would marry the guy!!!!

Terry:
I almost had the chance to play at the Sir John but it never worked out... The Platters were awesome... that venue had a lot of the groups of the day play there - usually once a month... the Drifters, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner and others. Too bad things were so separated in those days - With the exception of Ray Charles (Who I actually snuck in underage to see) I only got to see these types of groups after they were older (But still wonderful stuff)...The Sir John went way down hill pretty fast, thank God the music did not.

We snuck into the Dinner Key auditorium thru the black ladies bathroom window and ran like hell thru the audience...Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers were playing

Anyone remember Beer Can beach on Key Biscayne??

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/23/2007 06:41:24 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Denise, first of all, good to see you back on the site....the 68 Brothers were regulars there...I wrote about it before and I'll repeat myself...I had a 1948 Dodge that I bought from Mr.Rosher , who lived accross the street from me for a $ 150. dollars .... Mr .Roshers Daughter was a Stags Sponsor in 1958.... I would take this car of mine and purchase # 2 kegs of beer from the Lugway bar (Terry correct me if I'am wrong)on 67th avenue and coral way and have a Stags get together , both spigets hanging out of the back windows, drill holes in the floorboard for drainage , go to the ICE house on douglas and dixie hway and headed to beer can beach as must of the ice would melt and have a great time...

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/24/2007 08:41:10 By Terrence W. Grant
Mona and I became friends in the parking lot across the street from the Nook Coral Gables Laundry. We discussed our age difference among other things

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/25/2007 09:34:03 By Tim Yero
Terry:
You are not going to believe this - whatever year you 'snuck into Dinner Key Auditorium'.... several years later (Probably 64-65) Billy Swain TDT65 and I and 2 other of my band members 'snuck' into that SAME window - ended up in the balcony by the bathroom - right???
Saw Ray Charles for the first time... (Also saw him at the Sir John later on like I posted earlier)... we learned more from his music (and progressions) than anyone else.
One of my biggest musical thrills was playing on that same stage a couple of years later...
Tim TDT65

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/25/2007 07:10:38 By Terrence W. Grant
Tim Of course I believe it...hell Herbie followed me thru South and Central America he just didnt look for my picture on the wall along with every service man based in Panama or Pan Am employee in the other countries....we do the same things in the same places thats why we be brothers.

There was a friend of TDT who went to St. Theresa name Tom Southard. He was one of my best buddies killed on a motorcycle when he was 26 and a pilot with Delta...Tommy and I and another guy went to Sir John in the event room. There was this good looking black female singer on stage. When she was finished she went to her dressing room and Tommy followed her in and locked the door. Bobby the big bouncer banged on the door and Tommy wouldnt unlock it. Bobby broke the door down and there was Tommy on his knee's begging the attention of the girl. Because the bouncer knew us he didnt kick the --- out of us but threw us out and Tommy paid for the door and jam repair.

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 05/25/2007 07:24:50 By Terrence W. Grant
Of course alot of us did alot of capers...but one of the best I've ever heard was from John S class of 68 who told me this story in Belize. A group of guys used to go into the seaquarium at night and spearfish the fish in the enclosed glass pool. Fish selection was good and easy to corner. They had to do some Houdini type escapes from the night watchman...John you might want to share more details on the above

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 06/04/2007 11:53:03 By Tim Yero
Terry:
John mentioned this at the Doozie as well - he left out the part that even though they were in the tank with them, they actually could not catch any fish at the SeaAquarium and ended up at McD's ordering a filet sandwich. (Same as Belize?)...
LOL Tim TDT65

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 06/04/2007 07:29:25 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Tim , John does not eat at fast food restaurants..if you look at the pictures from Belize , we ate off his catch for days , thanks to him we ate real good.......no bait fish from the late 60's Brothers.....

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 06/04/2007 07:35:08 By Gaston Ruiz (1968)
Tim, not to mention the GREAT catch , by Brother Grant (GOLIATH) the hotel made us a great Dinner and Lunch for the following day......along with Our Yellow Tails(Falstaff) and Snook.......

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 06/05/2007 09:53:32 By Tim Yero
Gus...
R E L A X... Take a deep breath - smell the rain.

As an inaugural Doozie participant, it's now more difficult knowing what is truly believable and what is not. I cannot apologize for not knowing the 'real truth' as there may be no such thing. You should not feel the need to be defensive - You know I loved meeting John and will love him forever. He probably caught tons of fish (as you did too in Belize) and everyone ate well (no doubt).

I thought it may paint a funny (false) picture of John swimming in a SeaAquarium tank (per Terry) with all those fish - and not catching anything! ... an opportunity lost.

The only one thing more false (or should I say 'enhancing your emagination') than golf stories - is fishing stories (Pictures or no pictures!)

PS I don't eat fast food either - especially the McD's fish...I don't know anyone who does. I do love fresh BBQ'd pig...with lots of extra garlic!
(and flan)...

LOL Tim TDT65

Gaston:
I need to plant some trees (Maybe 20) across my fence line on one side of my property. A neighbor said azalea's would be good, with some southern jasmine trim on the fence... do you think that would be a good idea?

I have a pool in the back - one side of my property I own - the other side (a 5 acre plot) is going to have some homes built on it soon and I wanted to block the view to the pool in the back along the property line.

(Remember - I live in a different climate than South Florida - it gets colder in Citrus County and is usually a bit cooler with less humidity than you - but not by much)...

Tim TDT65

Re: STAGS Notorious HangoutsPosted at 06/06/2007 08:46:40 By Tim Yero
Gaston:
One other thing I forgot - at the Doozie you mentioned some "super" fertilizer for citrus plants that you tried but was too expensive (not cost effective but increased the fruit production)... What is it ? - where could I get a bag, is it readily available?)
I have a few Citrus trees (Oranges, grapefruit) and one bag would not break me and be helpful.
